25.01.2022 Today I attended the under 18 rugby union exhibition game between The Hutchins School & The Rugby Union Academy Devils - with Hutchins taking out the win! Today's event provided an opportunity for the Devils to play at least one game this year in their unique team wear which was designed for a sporting and cultural tour of New Zealand scheduled for April 2020, but cancelled due to COVID-19. The team wear features palawa artwork and was designed by local Tasmanian Indigeno...us artist, Sharnie Reid. A beautiful & moving welcome to country was also sung by Dewayne Everettsmith Thanks to Neil Edwards, President of Hutchins Friends of Rugby, and Ebony Altimira, President of the Tasmanian Rugby Union for having me. Well done to both teams on what was a great match!!

21.01.2022 Tassie’s success on the international stage continues with our very own Tasmanian runner Stewart McSweyn claiming the Australian 1500m record at the Doha Diamond League meet in Qatar. Stewart's outstanding result caps off a brief but sensational campaign overseas, who now owns the 1500m, 3000m (which he set last week) and the 10,000m national records. Racing against the clock, Stewart put on a show of strength, speed and confidence to take out the event in 3:30.51.... Well done Stewart - what an incredible achievement!

16.01.2022 Thanks to Rob, Peter, Grant and James from Rowing Tasmania for taking the time to meet with me recently to discuss their future plans for the Riverbend Rowing Centre. It is envisaged that the Rowing Centre will provide a hub for rowing and other related on-water based sports in the region, consolidating rowing facilities for Clubs and schools. The Centre will grow the sport at all levels from learn to row programs, schools, Clubs, masters, para-rowing and those competing at the elite level. Rowing membership is continuing to grow with Rowing Tasmania reporting it had 2,449 members in the 2019 calendar year. 1,848 of Rowing Tasmania’s members were under the age of 18 and the sport is popular with male and female participants, with an approximately 50 per cent gender split across the membership.

16.01.2022 Condolences to Garry Davidson's family and friends. Garry was born on the North-West Coast in 1954, and was 18 when he was recruited to Geelong, where he played 30 games in four years, and after two seasons with VFA side Caulfield, played a season at Richmond for 10 games in 1978. Garry then returned to Tasmania in 1982 to coach Glenorchy, and in three seasons racked up 54 wins from 67 games and the 1983 premiership.... After spending 1985-86 as TFL coaching director as well as coach of Tasmania’s state senior team and Teal Cup under-17s, Davidson was appointed senior coach of North Hobart in 1987. Thank you for your outstanding contribution to Tasmania’s football fraternity.

15.01.2022 Last month I was thrilled to announce a six per cent increase in stakes money for this financial year. Following consultation with racing code committees, today, I joined with Tasracing Australia CEO, Paul Eriksson Tasracing to announce how that money will be distributed amongst the three racing codes. The additional stakes money will go towards increased stakes per race or on increasing the number of races, which means m...ore opportunities for participants to win prizemoney. I look forward to announcing a further stakes increase next year. For full details see - http://www.premier.tas.gov.au//stakes_increase_to_be_share

14.01.2022 A successful and enjoyable return to racing at Elwick this afternoon. Well done to all of the race winners. Great to drop by and see race 1 winner, mare Red Letter Lady, who was bred in Tasmania, so won a lucrative breeders bonus. Red Letter Lady is also trained by leading Longford trainer Bill Ryan and ridden by Siggy Carr.... I want to also add my condolences to connections of star Tassie racehorse Hellova Street who tragically died over the weekend. An especially difficult period for the staff that looked after him including trainer Scott Brunton and Tegan Keys. Since winning a 3YO maiden in Hobart at his fourth race start seven years ago, Hellova Street went on to win another 19 times as well as notch 25 minor placings for career earnings of $1.291 million. Hellova Street’s imposing record included thirteen stakes wins, highlighted by two Tasmanian Newmarket Handicaps, three weight-for-age Mowbray Stakes, and the Group 3 Chatham Stakes at Flemington in 2017. He also was twice crowned Tasmanian Horse of the Year but what race lovers and punters alike will remember him for most was his incredible will to win.

This new $20 million facility is an important component of the larger redevelopment project of the Derwent Entertainment Centre, which is being brought up to NBL standard in time for Tasmania’s entry into the National Basketball League in 2021-22.

Trained by Wesley Vale’s John Castles, Agouda Ruler (photo by Stacey Lear) won the Dandy Patch for the boys, while Melnrowley won the girls section, the Evicus, for Stowport based trainer Craig Hayes. In great news for Tasmanian breeding, both youngsters were born and bred in the North West! Craig and his family bred Melnrowley while Agouda Ruler is a homebred for Larry and Liz Nichols. Big result for Gareth Rattray too having driven both feature race winners!
