25.01.2022 Two minute reading tips!!

20.01.2022 Great list of the differences between literacy approaches. Is your child’s school using a structured literacy program??

19.01.2022 Wonderful handwriting resource.

17.01.2022 How to combine phonics and high-frequency words? If we want to be consistent with our phonics teaching - we need to teach high-frequency words (sight words) in ...the same way we teach all other words. That is, to help kids segment the words into graphemes and teach the graphemes so that they don't need to memorise these common words by shape. So how do we teach them? Initially when beginner readers encounter them we need to break them into graphemes so that they can see and read the graphemes they already know e.g. s ai d. Kids can read the and and we provide the /e/ sound for . As they progress and learn the complex part of the code, we make sure we teach them to read and spell high-frequency words with those spellings, e.g. when we teach make sure we teach, day, today, say, play, way, away, may - which are all high-frequency words. This is a logical way to teach spelling maintaining the link between sounds and their spelling in words. What what we don't overburden memories with redundant sigh words. Here is our FREE high-frequency word chart organised according to spellings. There are 2 versions UK and USA. https://www.phonicbooks.co.uk//phonic-high-frequency-word/

17.01.2022 More free resources for teaching children to read. https://dsf.net.au/home-resources

14.01.2022 When children first learn to read they should only be given readers/books that contain the sound-letter links that they have learnt so far (and a few common words) When a child is given a reader they can’t read it reinforces BAD habits- guessing from the picture and guessing from what they think the sentence should be . Some schools teach phonics, such as Jolly Phonics, but don’t have the books! Non-decodable books get sent home. Children then feel like poor readers and... don’t want to read, and parents think their children are t going well with reading as ‘why would school send home a reader that they can’t read?’ It’s awesome that Jolly Phonics Readers are available as e-readers for free until June 30th. 93 books in 5 levels! 13.01.2022 Some great spelling tips!!

12.01.2022 Many teachers know how to teach Word Families but have you heard about Word Friends? These are words that have common spelling patterns and it helps students to... make connections and orthographically map words. This is a great way to teach sight words/irregular high frequency words. WORD FAMILIES- are words that have the same ‘rime’. The "onset" is the initial phonological unit of any word (e.g. c in cat) and the term "rime" refers to the string of letters that follow, usually a vowel and final consonants (e.g. at in cat). WORD FRIENDS- focus on spelling patterns (especially irregular patterns) and connect words that follow suit. Just like friends have things in common, ‘word friends’ have spelling in common. Secret note for those who read this far down.... this poster and blank templates have been released with the podcast freebies on our website https://theliteracycollective.com/45-how-to-make-spelling-/

10.01.2022 Teaching kids to map words enables them to self-teach "‘Self-teaching’ is an essential ingredient on the road to independent reading. Once they master the spel...ling-to-sound correspondences, children can on their own, decipher the pronunciation of a novel string and associate it with a familiar meaning. With self-teaching, the neuronal links from the letter strings to sound and meaning can be progressively automatized without any further formal instruction. 08.01.2022 Another great explanation from Phonic Books on how to teach high frequency words.

04.01.2022 AUSPELD strongly supports evidence informed practice in the teaching of literacy. In order to read well, children need to be taught to read words accurately and... fluently, and they need the knowledge and vocabulary to understand what they read. The Phonics Check is one component of a high-quality structured literacy program. The recent announcement by the Federal Government that stage one of the Year 1 Phonics Check is now available to schools and families across Australia has been welcomed by AUSPELD. It is a simple tool which checks student progress in the second half of Year 1. The results of the Phonics Check provide teachers with a useful overview of students’ individual reading skills and assists teachers to identify students who need additional support. The Phonics Check is available now via a new online portal for teachers, school leaders and families called the Literacy Hub. The Hub includes information on how students learn to read, as well as resources for schools and families to support literacy development. Additional resources will be added over the coming months. Go to https://literacyhub.edu.au/ to find out more.

03.01.2022 I LOVED this version of James and the Giant Peach. Read with such great character expression! It is funny and engaging. An added bonus is that they are raising money for Partners In Health, which is a global health non-profit helping fight against COVID-19 in vulnerable parts of the world. The Roald Dahl Story Company are matching $1 million of donations to the cause. There are 10 episodes in total (available on the Roald Dahl YouTube channel) ... Episodes one and two are online and new episodes available every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
