19.01.2022 Excited for 2020's illustration trends? I'm feeling inspired so below, I've done a quick break down of the 10 top trends from Creative Bloq, and you can see what it all looks like in the article. Gorgeous! |=|+|=|+|=|+|=|+|=|+|=|+|=|+|=|+|=|+|=|+|=|+|=|... . . 1. Flat colour and limited palette. Key to success: add heavy light and shadows for extra oomph. 2. Atmospheric gradients. Keyword: seductive. 3. Blurring the lines between illustration and animation. Key to success: create hypnotic loops. 4. 3D surrealism. Key to success: texture. 5. Printmaking. No need to explain. 6. Body positivity. Keyword: caricature. 7. Illustrative lettering. Check out Martina Flor on Twitter. 8. Return of detail. Keyword: luxury. 9. Geometric patterns. Keyword: playful. 10. Illustration eclipses photography for big business (we've all been seeing it coming!)

16.01.2022 Kicking off a new decade with a fresh start? Me too! I've updated my portfolio (be.net/JanelleBrown) and now I get to look like a real designer. But enough about me, I'd love to hear about you: how are you getting a fresh start in 2020?

14.01.2022 Three simple steps for Facebook Live
13.01.2022 Anyone else been feeling like they're trapped in limbo since New Years? Yes? Me too. Here's how I managed to shake the feeling off:... 1. Get grounded: know who you needed to be this year to get your goals done. That came down to a few things that I could determine: self, health, family, career and friends 2. Define it: you need to start somewhere, so I started somewhere small. Since New Years, I've had lengthier projects that won't be finished or giving any closure until next week at the earliest. But with the weekend, I had time off work to deal with simpler personal stuff - and it turns out that what worked was filling out paperwork for a commitment that I was always going to be putting into action this year. 3. Acknowledgement: I needed to give myself a pat on the back for a job well done. And there you have it - with a simple 1,2,3 I'm grounded again and ready for my next win. Hope that gives you something to work with. And if you're still stuck in limbo, ask yourself: what do you need to be this year to get moving?
09.01.2022 Hey Facebook, how's it going? So I have a little secret I would love to share with you today, everyone has it though I don't know how many people use it. And it's going to make you a powerhouse in your digital business. It's called text-to-speech. Everyday when you're in business it's good practice to post on social media. If you're anything like me you kind of shy off from speaking as much as you usually would, meaning your language isn't as colourful, meaning you're not br...inging that human touch that you would when you with your friends or even when you're trying to be witty at the check out. But the formula for selling in the online space is to get people to know, like, and trust you before they buy from you. so you want to come across as naturally as possible. People don't always realise or explain that this means that you're using your creativity in your interactions to get across to people with your point of view. You know when you're trying to explain something as clearly as you can, and then there's the awkward silence because they're obviously not getting what you're saying, so you chuck in a joke, a change of perspective, or an idiom. And they get it. That doesn't always come across in writing. But I would like it to, so I am passing the secret onto you. Plus, who actually wants to sit there for an hour writing when you could just talk to your phone for 10 or 15 minutes and do an elaborate, interesting post. I know that when I make Facebook posts and type them out I'm definitely not as chatty as I am in real life, and I am definitely chatty, so I enjoy this method more. A few things to keep in mind before you get started: Write out a few dot points before you start so you can keep on track. When you speak, you do have to say for punctuation mark names out loud, the ones I use the most are, "full stop", "comma", "exclamation mark", and "question mark". Keep talking, you can always go back and edit. So, if you have a notepad app on your phone, mine is Google docs, you can use the text-to-speech function to write out your next week's posts while you're pacing around keeping your mind moving. I hope that helps, and if it does, feel free to share the lesson with your Facebook friends, because online business and remote work can be doable with a few handy tricks and tips.

04.01.2022 #TBT Today I found some fabulous old sketches for marketing a portrait stall. I can’t tell you how many sketches I’ve thrown out but these survived because they were fun (especially this first one here which makes me uncomfortable for several reasons, lol). It just makes me remember that playing with #Copic markers is fun. Do you have old pieces of paperwork that remind you of how you rock your work?
04.01.2022 "A friend is typing..." is a new feature in Groups. Have you noticed it? I love how encouraging it is, and have been pleasantly surprised at how it reframes conversations, at least in my head. Especially when the topic is a sticky one and people are getting antsy. It's a good little change. It sets up a reminder that we joined our groups because we all have a thing in common, and that we would be better off approaching situations as friends, and I'm hoping, with respect.... It reminds us when we are in a great space that we are surrounded by friends. Maybe it was a tweak that was forced because of the inflammatory behaviour that has been going on here in the past few years. Sometimes we all need these kind of reminders because it can be easy to forget in the busyness of our lives, especially when we come to Facebook when we want to procrastinate. So it certainly is a good little change (though possibly not such a little change on the development team's part) and I'm looking forward to see if it does have a widespread positive effect in the future.
04.01.2022 One of the cutest business books I've ever read. Two other cuties I can recommend are Purple Cow by Seth Godin and especially right now, Who Moved My Cheese by Dr Spencer Johnson.

02.01.2022 Graphic Designer friends - have you heard about Cancelled Con yet? Btw, love this event poster. Since events are moving to the internet, we might as well take advantage of the digital medium for what would have been posters
