22.01.2022 As an assessing and treating Psychologist, I think this approach in isolation of other assessments is dangerous. It is not fair to measure someone's need for funding based on observable behaviour captured in one assessment. My arguments are: 1) This does not necessarily take in to account variability in functioning in the individual; 2) Not all families are equipped to to provide the level of observation and verbal or written communication needed to participate effectively... in this process; 3) This in no way honours how emotionally, cognitively and physically taxing it is for some people to demonstrate those functional behaviours (e.g., those who are able to mask); 4) This implies that functional behaviour by its observed presence or absence is the only measure of disability. I will be sharing my concerns directly with the NDIA!

22.01.2022 It's officially R U OK Day. To me, this should be a question we're asking ourselves and each other regularly. What does it look like when you aren't ok? What are you thinking, feeling and doing? What do you need in this space? Can you provide that for yourself or do you need help? If you ask yourself and those close to you if they're ok, you need to be prepared for an honest response. Make the space for it. There are some tips below regarding this if you're unsure what to ...do. At a time when we're physically distanced from each other, it's more important than ever to reach out

12.01.2022 Good news and in writing! The additional Medicare subsidised sessions will allow people in eligible areas who have used their 10 sessions to continue to receive mental health care from their psychologist, psychiatrist, GP or other eligible allied health worker. The new items will apply to people subject to public health orders restricting their movement within the state or territory issued at any time from 1 July 2020 to 31 March 2021, and to people who are required to isola...te or quarantine under public health orders. Patients will be required to have a Mental Health Treatment Plan and a review with their GP to access the additional sessions. This measure will commence on Friday 7 August and be available until 31 March 2021. https://www.health.gov.au//additional-covid-19-mental-heal

06.01.2022 What are your feelings telling you?

06.01.2022 Hello fellow Victorians. We are entering in to a phase of further restrictions. It's okay to be scared. It's okay to be anxious. All of your feelings are valid and you are not alone. First things first - breathe. With all this complexity, it is time to go back to basics. I am using good old Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs as a reference point (see image below). ... Start from the base of the hierarchy - physiological needs: food, water, warmth, rest. If you perceive these basic resources are under threat, breathe and make a plan. If you are struggling financially and/or cannot get to the grocery store, reach out to friends, family, charitable organisations and alike (https://www.foodwise.com.au/). There is help available. If you have these resources, now is the time to add this to your gratitude list. Rest and self-care will be covered in a separate post. Move up to the next tier of the hierarchy - security and safety. Do you have enough money to pay for housing, food and bills? If you do, it's a time to be thankful and perhaps share any excess with those less fortunate. No matter who you are, a budget is always helpful (https://moneysmart.gov.au/budgeting/budget-planner). If you don't have enough money for the basics because of existing bills and debts, perhaps reaching out to a financial counsellor would help (https://ndh.org.au/). That's enough for today. Breathe. Try to get the basics covered. Ask for help if you need it. Also remember that Psychologists just like me are available to talk to, with telephone and video call (Telehealth) sessions available at a time when leaving home might not be an option. You're not in this alone.
