22.01.2022 To my piano students' parents: 2020 has been a year of waiting, adapting, evaluating and compromise. I don't remember another time in my personal or professional life that has been as challenging in every single area. Throughout it all, I have been blessed with those who have shared this journey with patience, encouragement and support. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your patience, support and understanding while I have made the changes needed to be able... to continue working with my wonderful piano families and babies. Know that having my students as part my week has been a huge part of why I have been able to smile, laugh and been inspired to be creative. Thank you for raising such gorgeous human beings, and for the trust and privilege of allowing me to be part of their lives. Have a healthy and safe break and will see you next term, refreshed and recharged! Jane See more

21.01.2022 Getting to know Sue Thompson Sue is a highly respected piano teacher who has had many years' experience in studio teaching, as well as lecturing in piano pedagogy at various universities in Queensland, USA and music teacher conferences and workshops in Australia and New Zealand. How would you describe yourself? ... Teacher, publisher, examiner What makes you smile? Students and teachers who are willing to learn. Are you a bathroom singer? No, I dont sing because my husband said I have no voice. What was your learning to play journey like? After my very early lessons with a very good teacher in Christchurch, because that was where I was born, we moved and I had a young teacher for five years but it was pretty ordinary teaching. When I moved to Wellington I found a good teacher, not great but good and she took me up to Grade 8. My best teacher was after this where I had to do theory for the first time in my life and I dont know how I did it because I was very arty. I was interested in games, and I did that for 10 years and did the whole thing including printing. When the company went out of business and my very big photocopier broke, that was the end of it. How did you start teaching? I started teaching when I was still a student at age 16. I had some neighbours who wanted to know how to play like me. In those days, thats how most people started. I had a very good teacher at the end, not the early ones, but later. The only time I never taught was the seven years we spent in London where I had two children and we lived on the smell of an oily rag. As soon as we went back to New Zealand, I started teaching, then we went to Sydney I taught a few students there. When John was offered to take up the Qld Opera Company we moved to Brisbane and Ive been teaching ever since. I really shouldnt be teaching any more but I have a handful from Grade 3 to AMusA. The sight reading and aural tests I dont always remember to do, but they all play nicely. From 1970 to 2018 I have put through students through piano exams. There have been over 66 AMusA with Distinction and 17 LMusA. This means you can play nicely. It doesnt mean you can teach. 18.01.2022 An interview about one of my own esteemed mentors. x Narelle Doolan won the Queensland Conservatorium Foundation Scholarship in 1965, and graduated after 5 years full-time study from QCM, Griffith University. Under the piano tutelage of Max Olding AM, she holds a Master Diploma in Music, along with Associate and Licentiate Diplomas from Trinity College of Music, London, and the AMEB. How would you describe yourself in 5 words?... Only 5 words?! Diligent. Determined. Methodical. Sensitive/Caring. Optimist. Cant leave out sense of humour, intolerant of plain stupidity and poor grammar; and none-the-least, annoying to people who have to put up with my Diligence, Determination, and Methodical-ness). Are you a bathroom singer? No, Im a bathroom cleaner. The shower is left waterless with shining chrome, perfectly folded towels. Etc, etc. How can I sing through all that?! What type of music do you like to play the most? Ive covered so much over the years; the stock party-pieces where I used to blow-off technical steam, if you like. If youre talking about listening to, it has changed over the years, all things from Bach to Bacharach. Being a Classical musician, my downtime choices are usually Jazz, Cocktail/lounge, Zen/Spa, but I still gravitate to Rachmaninoff. What type of music do you like to write? I stopped writing music when I didnt have to write it. I did like to compose Fugues during my years at the Conservatorium. Hearing what I see has been my biggest Godsend. Are you doing today what you dreamed of when you were young? No. I dont believe I was very ambitious. I just took things in my stride and gratefully accepted opportunities that came my way. What advice do you have for someone who wants a career doing what you do (or hope to do)? The same advice I have given over the years. Choose a career in which you flourish (not just what you love, or think youll love); a career in which the disciplines come naturally and relatively easy. In this context, there should be little sense of dread, frustration, or regret. But, there must be a desire for diligence. For the full interview visit https://www.pianozonementors.com/mentors

17.01.2022 Getting to know Wendy Edwards Beardall-Norton Wendy Edwards Beardall-Norton was born in Toronto, Ontario, and raised in Hamilton. She had her first piano lessons at the age of 5. Wendy was twice President of the Fredericton Music Teachers' Association, and a Founding Member and President of the Fredericton Music Society. Wendy has enjoyed a successful and fulfilling career in piano and theory teaching and was proud to see her students achieve both academic excellence at the h...ighest levels and also to attain a lasting love and appreciation of music of all genres. Though Wendy has been composing sporadically over the years, it is with Christopher Norton's encouragement that she has returned to this endeavour, and has released her first published collection "Take It From Me" and "Take It From Me Again" of 24 intermediate piano solos. What did you want to be when you were a child? Anything involving singing, dancing, playing piano or a musical instrument in ensemble. Loved playing all sports, and was good at most so maybe a semi pro athlete?; OR an Archaeologist! What type of music do you like to write the most? Much of my work is based on lyrical styles because, basically, Im a poet and a singer, so most of my music has singable phrases. Which of your compositions has been the most popular that has surprised you, and why? The two you mentioned have been popular. Personal comments from friends and family and audience after recitals would also suggest that everyone has a favourite. A lot of people enjoy Think of Me, and Carousel, Waltz and Halloween, from my first book, Take it from Me, which was released last year and only had a few months on the market before Covid 19 became a factor in everyones life. My Second book, Take it from Me .Again, was just released in July, 2020, so time will tell Are you doing today what you dreamed of when you were younger? Music will, to my dying day, be an intimate part of my life. Creating music IS SUCH A PRIVILEGE! The answer is YES!!! 13.01.2022 Learning the piano certainly demands many hours of hard work, but how we spend our practice time is arguably more important than the number of hours we put in. ... Chopin said, thoughtless repetitions do no good at all. Practicing, he believed, call[s] for the intelligence and the whole will of the pupil. Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, and Mozart all emphasize the importance of devoting some of our practice time to technical exercises. Brahms, too, would have his students practice slowly before gradually increasing the tempo of their playing. Brahms and Chopin both encouraged their students to practice the instructional piano pieces in Muzio Clementis Gradus ad Parnassum. Brahms would also challenge his students to play exercises in keys other than the one in which they were originally written. Florence May, one of Brahms piano students, recalls that the composer would encourage his pupils to improvise certain exercises based on the repertoire that they were learning. Mozart, for instance, would have his students practice scales, trills, and mordants, first with the right hand and then with the left. He would insist that his students played these exercises very slowly at first. Mozart even had his students practice with a handkerchief covering their hands. In a letter to his father, Mozart recalls a conversation with another keyboardist, who, after witnessing his virtuosity, exclaimed, Good God! How hard I work and sweatand to you, my friend, it is all childs play. In response, Mozart quipped I too had to work hard, so as not to have to work hard any longer. Liszt admitted that in early years he was not patient enough to make haste slowly, he was impatient for immediate results, and took short cuts, but later he wished he had progressed "by logical steps instead of by leaps". Debussy stressed on studies and etudes, and in fact he composed two books of études that reinforce skills like playing repeated notes. Horowitz would invent his own exercises entirely from scratch. Horowitz kept his practice sessions fresh by consistently studying new repertoire: Each week I devote at least two to three hours of my practice time to music I have never seen or played before. Rachmaninoff encouraged Horowitz to go for long strolls, warning him, If you dont walkyour fingers will not run. Walks invite us to explore the benefits of mental practice imagining and visualizing ourselves executing our repertoire. Stepping away from the piano also allows us to take the time to learn from musicians other than pianists. Chopin, for instance, would encourage his piano students to listen to singers as models for successful execution of ornaments such as the turn, or gruppetto.

09.01.2022 What are the three questions asked by a piano teacher who decided 10 years ago to fit her business around her life, rather than live around her business? Is my piano studio how I want it to be? What do I want it be? What do I have to do to make it how I want it to be?... Why? Raising a family while running a business is no joke. Having the energy and time for your children, extended family and friends as well as working ON your business is a fine balancing act. And lets not even mention the know-how of starting that passionate dream project. Fast forward to 2020 and the biggest challenges for business owners in a generation, and this teacher sailed through. How? By having a deep understanding of her market and by knowing what processes are crucial and which ones arent for a smooth customer experience. Who is this? Me. What did you do? I established PianoZone Mentors. How? Get in touch and find out. What are you offering? Answers, guidance, support, and tangible skills to develop your own approaches and achieve your goals. There are lots of courses you can do, groups you can join, and ideas you can implement but these can be overwhelming to manage, and a gamble if you havent done the right research. You also need skills in tech, marketing, business planning, and teaching which can be hit-and-miss to acquire, and expensive. Another real problem is the experience and knowledge of the person who has written or is delivering the service. Have you ever thought to research their qualifications? Asked about their own student retention? Heard about their ex-students achievements? And the most important question: are they teaching you the SKILLS you need to make the right decisions for your unique situation and goals rather than giving you a quick short-term fix?? Of course, if you want quick answers, easy solutions, stop gap games and slick-but-generic-how-to videos/podcasts then go for it because we wont suit you. BUT, if you want more, want to know what you need to do (and how) to achieve the results you really want then snoop through our site, read our testimonials, book a video call and ask your questions. https://www.pianozonementors.com/ #creativepiano #creativepianoteachers #digitallearning #digitalpiano #fons #iteachmusic #keysuniversity #makinglifefunagain #musicismylife #musicalmentors #musico #musicteacherlife #musicteachersassociation #musictechnology #pianist #piano #pianoblog #pianocommunity #pianogram #pianolesson #pianonetwork #pianostudio #pianoteacher #pianoteacherlife #pianoteachernation #pianoteaching #pianoteachingcommunity #teachersfollowteachers #teachingismysuperpower #teachmusic

08.01.2022 Getting to know Christopher Norton Christopher Norton (born June 22, 1953) was born in New Zealand and is a British pianist and composer. Norton obtained a degr...ee in music from the University of Otago in 1974. He taught music in Wellington high schools, worked as a composer-in-schools for a year, and then freelanced as a composer, arranger and pianist. How would you describe yourself? A music fan who composes. What makes you smile? Seeing my grandchildren on my computer screen (and even better in real life) What scares you the most? Losing my (excellent) health Are you a bathroom singer? As it happens, no. What type of music do you like to play the most? Classical (Beethoven mid-period sonatas) and 20th century (Ginastera, Shostakovitch, Ravel, Prokofiev) What type of music do you like to write the most? Popular music for students, ideally late intermediate in standard Do you have time to just noodle around and play for yourself or is it always work right now? I do have time to noodle around but most of the time the noodling leads to a composition! How do you describe what you do professionally? Writing music to be enjoyed by young performers all over the world. Are you doing today what you dreamed of when you were young? I really am - Ive been a composer full-time since 1980 but I always thought, from probably the age of 16, that I would like to write music for a living. How did you get here? By writing what I liked the sound of and combining a diverse range of influences (concert piano, playing in bands, working in studios) into a distinctive style that I can call my own. Im living the dream, helped by the love and support of my wife, who is a fine published composer herself. How do you describe what you do professionally? I conceive of projects and then write them, often (like Connections and Microjazz) starting with piano books and extending them into other areas - violin and piano, recorder ensemble, wind sextet, classical guitar, lever harp. I have also, along with my wife, written 30 short musicals for schools. What advice do you have for someone who wants are career doing what you do (or hope to do!)? Write what you know and try to write every day - treat it like a job of work, but enjoy all of it as you are doing it. Where do you think you will be after 25 years? Since I am 67, I would expect to be retired at best! https://www.pianozonementors.com/mentors
