20.01.2022 On the morning of Saturday, 30 May, dozens of local residents will be hitting the street to plant up verge gardens in front of their homes. Jane Street Community Garden is partnering with Jonathan Sri, Councillor for The Gabba to give away thirty verge planting starter packs. Each starter pack will include 2 fruit trees, 6-8 understory plants (including herbs & perennial greens) and enough high grade organic soil and mulch for these plantings. We'll be giving these packs away... FOR FREE to the first 30 households that are located in the Gabba Ward and that register through my office before Monday, 25 May. (Unfortunately you need to actually have space outside your home to plant a verge garden... if your entire front footpath is concrete you won't be able to get a starter pack. The verge is any green space between your house and the road, so you can plant the verge on either side of the footpath.) If you'd like to score some free plants, soil and mulch to plant up the public verge in front of your home, email my office at: [email protected] with your name, address, phone number, and any other specific details we should be aware of regarding the site. Renters can get planting without your landlord's permission. (The verge is public property - it doesn't belong to your landlord) But if you live in a block of flats/apartments and you want to plant up your front verge, please have a chat to at least some of your neighbours and maybe drop a couple of flyers in their letterboxes before you get planting, just to make sure most people are cool with it.

16.01.2022 Jonathans Sri's office will be premiering a new short film that focuses on a series of radical food activism projects that our volunteers have been involved in. Produced by local documentary makers Christine Schindler and Nathan Gibson, it tells the story of how urban farms, community orchards, seedling hubs and edible verge gardens have proliferated around Kurilpa, Woolloongabba and Bennung-Urrung as a community response to crisis. Grab a picnic blanket, BYO snacks and drin...ks, and join us in the park for a free outdoor movie night in Raymond Park, Kangaroo Point (near KP’s new community orchard and urban farm which are featured in the film). This should be a great opportunity to reconnect after the covid lockdown, get to know your neighbours and learn how you can get involved with the various urban farming projects. Check out the below event for more information.

12.01.2022 During lockdown a flock of Bush Turkey's moved into the gardens. Even though they are usually territorial, they loved the gardens so much during the absence of volunteers they decided to become friends and ALL move in. I much prefer our style of gardening, so this afternoon lets move back in and give the gardens some much needed love! Our monthly Sunday working bee starts at 3pm this afternoon, hope to see you there!
