24.01.2022 KeithBurt/ DAY 11 / Around the world in 12 days Sitting Room, 2020 oil on canvas, 25.5 x 25.5 cm, framed Keith’s poignant work speaks to many of us who have not been able to visit family during 2020. His is a longing for a person rather than place and I defy anyone not to feel emotional when reading the following statement!... This year I've dreamt of going to my mothers house in Melbourne. Since moving to Queensland more than a decade ago I haven't visited her as often as I should have. But in 2020 I have been denied the opportunity altogether. The sitting room holds the relics of her family life. The chair belonged to my grandfather. The painting on the wall was in my childhood home. There's a globe my father bought from a mail order catalogue pre-internet. The treasured crystal cabinet pokes into the background. And on the table is an 80th birthday card from many years ago now. My mother has been alone with these things for most of the year. And I feel a long way away. For purchase enquiries please call the gallery + 61 7 3254 1855. 24.01.2022 From the studio If youre looking for some Monday afternoon inspiration, todays featured artist is very creative and Gondry-esque! Come with us as we spend some time with protege artist, Leith Maguire and studio friends. She may be working in isolation but she is not alone! Colin (the seagull): paper connoisseur/bonafide feinschmecker. Loves a toothy cotton rag under his webbed feet. Also adores a greasy hot chip. We're trying to meet in the middle on this.... Selwyn (the goat): resident gardener. Is currently obsessed with the movements of the neighbourhood possums, who are allegedly destroying this year's silverbeet crop. Am beginning to have my doubts about existence of said "possums". Pig: features regularly in my drawings. An excellent sitter. Always up for a good existential debate. . . . @leithmaguire #leithmaguire #drawing #stayhome #artistinisolation #janmurphygallery

22.01.2022 Nicolette Johnson | DAY 1 | Around the world in 12 days Entwined, 2020 stoneware with glaze, 53.5 x 47.0 x 20.0 cm On the first day of our campaign we are off to Japan and specifically, Kyoto.... Brisbane based ceramic artist, Nicolette Johnson has managed to capture the essence of this fabled city in her beautifully serene and elegant vessel. Entwined, 2020 is a coiled stoneware pot with six handles twisting around each other, adorned with clay spheres that hint at tree buds, fruits on a branch, or pearls of seaweed. It is shrouded in a crystalline turquoise glaze which lends a patinated texture to the surface. The pot, inspired by a trip to Kyoto last year, is an homage to the city’s historied culture of pottery and reverence for the handmade, as well as its strong connection to the natural world. 20.01.2022 Robert Malherbe / DAY 2 / Around the world in 12 days Lake Pillans Park, Lithgow, 2020 oil on linen, 56.5 x 66.0 cm $6,200 framed ... Rather than paint one of the many international destinations Robert has visited, he decided to stay close to his home in the Blue Mountains and record a place that has provided him great solace during 2020 sometimes there really is no place like home. "This is the place I go to to feel calm and inspired. It's down the other side of the mountain in Lithgow, near NSW's oldest iron blast furnace- the ruins of which are still standing. It's called Lake Pillans, a human-made wetland in an otherwise industrial landscape. A saner, quieter world, a sanctuary for frogs and screeching birds. Not many people wander around here, a few dog walkers, some surveyors in hi-vis gear on their lunch break and when the weather is right, a landscape painter. During the recent lockdown, I made this place my getaway. The light here is most beautiful, just before five, the water still and mirror-like." 19.01.2022 Now showing Louise Tate’s solo exhibition ‘Flowerings’ until 10 April 2021. "An hour of solitude, to undo all the wrongs of the world,’ writes poet Pablo Neruda. There have been so many hours of solitude this year. The majority of this exhibition was made during lockdown in Melbourne, where life mostly took place within the four corners of my living room. Each work is a kind of fiction, narrated by the many writers who kept me company during a long and lonely winter. Disemb...odied hands appear again and again, like a community of distant friends that aren’t quite close enough to touch. These paintings became a comfort; an antidote the restlessness that pervaded everything and everyone, and a way to tell the stories that couldn’t exist." The exhibition can be viewed online via our website. https://www.janmurphygallery.com.au//louisetate_flowerings/ Installation photography by Chloe Callistemon.
18.01.2022 Michael Muir / DAY 3 / Around the world in 12 days Light that shines, 2020 oil on linen, 138.0 x 168.5 cm Michael Muir has always used travel as the catalyst for his art practice. With his wings clipped in recent months, Muir has spent time trawling through his photographic archive. New Zealand with its wide open spaces and green rolling hills is one of the countries he looks forward to revisiting.... This particular work is from a trip to New Zealand a couple of years ago. It still is fresh in my mind, the open space, the crisp air and the feeling of being quite small in the majesty of the surrounding landscape. I want to convey a moment, a sense of a place, beauty and hope. For purchase enquiries please call the gallery. + 61 7 3254 1855. 15.01.2022 Our next exhibition Islands by Brisbane local Adam Lester opens on 23 June. Adam is a keen observer and animates his paintings with layers of high key colour and a unique aesthetic. Loosely based on images and scenes that he has either photographed or sketched while travelling, these paintings offer a dreamy porthole to another place and time. While making this body of work, thoughts of escapism played on the artists mind, increasingly so during the last few months of isol...ation. In Adams words, These paintings are optimistic and dreamlike and somehow work as antidote to these crazy times the world is going through. In number of the paintings the figures are either walking or riding a bike, but slowly and purposefully. Here is a sneak peek of 3 works but please email us if you would like an early preview of the full exhibition. 14.01.2022 Lara Merrett / DAY 4 / Around the world in 12 days It all comes back to nature, 2020 acrylic and ink on linen, 150.0 x 120.0 cm Lara Merrett is another of our artists who found inspiration in their own back yard quite literally. For Lara, the beauty of rediscovering her beachside home in New South Wales after a long hiatus overseas, has been both invigorating and nurturing.... "Returning home is always the other gift of travelling. Being home with fresh eyes and seeing old familiar places as new. Coming back to my NSW South Coast home post fires and Covid gave new meaning to this experience. Everything was different yet here I was standing on the same land I had left 12 months earlier. I could see for kilometres through the bush that was normally dense surrounded by a new eerie silence. Post fire voids meant ocean views and bigger skies. Fragility and resilience of new growth now mattered even more. Charcoal black next to sublime colours gave this foreign landscape a confusing wonder. 14.01.2022 Now showing Monica Rohan’s solo exhibition ‘Mind how you go’ until 10 April 2021. "When I began painting this exhibition I was interested in the potential for gaps between trees and branches to act as portals or windows. I think this has been influenced both by stories of characters who traverse alternate worlds, as well as a response to feeling stuck in one place while longing to be elsewhere." 12.01.2022 NOW OPEN - Recent paintings by Adam Pyett. We are excited to unveil the new solo exhibition by Melbourne-based artist, Adam Pyett. "In this body of work I have concentrated on making landscape paintings where the painting is more important than the landscape. In a painting the sky need not be blue and the leaves of a tree need not be green. The relationship between colours in a painting is the most important thing.... After using a drawing to start a painting I refer back to the drawing less and less as the painting progresses. My memory of the original scene as well as countless other memories of trees, cloudy days, sunny days, mornings, afternoons, distant hills, dry grass etc. combine to inform the development of each painting. When working on a painting Im always looking for it to evoke a memory of sunlight and shadows on a tree or a distant hill or a cold morning or whatever. Once I see it I stop." 11.01.2022 AJ Taylor / DAY 8 / Around the world in 12 days Banksia at Point Lookout, 2020 oil on board, 121.5 x 175.5 cm, framed AJ Taylor has taken a trip across Moreton Bay to a place that many Queenslanders cherish. Our ever beautiful ‘Straddie’, never fails to remind us that we live in a very special part of the world.... North Stradbroke Island, or Minjerribah, has changed only a little in the 30 years I’ve been visiting. It is uniquely peaceful and unhurried, much of it untouched, some of it wild and unforgiving. Happily, sand mining has finally ceased on the island, but now there is talk of replacing it economically with large scale tourism involving resorts, a marina and even a bridge from the mainland. Informed by her background in architecture, Laura's exquisitely detailed paintings present moments taken from nature, housed within elaborate framing devices. 08.01.2022 Adam Lester / DAY 10 / Around the world in 12 days Temple wall (Kanyakumari), 2020 synthetic polymer paint on canvas, 106.5 x 106.5 cm, framed Kanyakumari is a coastal town on the southern most tip of India, it's renowned for being the place where three seas converge, the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. The place has a bit of an end of the world feel to it, like a frontier town, a bit wild and forgotten about.... Every evening a market would form along the 3000 year old Kumari Amman Temple wall. With the sea right behind, and the 133 ft tall Thiruvalluvar statue sitting on a small just island off the coast, it made for quite a dreamy and surreal backdrop. I've always been drawn to the food and snack carts wherever I would travel in the world, they’re like a one man band, autonomous to regular commerce, free to move and set up wherever they like, you could say they’re like a metaphor for the life of an artist! @adslester#aroundtheworldin12days #adamlester #janmurphygallery #kanyakumari

02.01.2022 In todays video, A.J Taylor invites us sit back and watch part of his incredible painting process. Andrews painted surfaces have amazing depth and in his own words, he describes his process as demonstrated in the time lapse video: In the first few sections you can see me applying contrasting layers of enamel over an initial impasto layer (there are a few days drying time between each section). Next I sand back all the layers to reveal the resulting system of marks. This i...s the surface I will start to paint on. Later the image is roughed-in using semi-transparent oil paint and slowly the forest emerges from the surface. . . . @a.j.taylor #painting #ajtaylor #stayhome #artistinisolation #janmurphygallery
02.01.2022 Today we call in on Brisbane-based artist Adam Lester. Speaking from his home studio, Adam is painting for his forthcoming solo exhibition, Islands, opening with us in late June. Ironically, the works hes producing are loosely based on some of his favourite places to travel. As this may be the only way we will be going overseas for sometime, we are looking forward to being transported to lands far away by Adams distinctive palette, gestural strokes and dreamy aesthetic. A ...healthy dose of escapism is just what the doctor ordered right now! Lottie has a strong exhibition history across Australia and internationally, including New Zealand, Mexico and Germany. She has worked with Kaldor Public Art Projects, Sydney, including a performance-based residency with Marina Abramovic in 2015. 01.01.2022 Heidi Yardley / DAY 9 / Around the world in 12 days Rakotzbrücke, 2020 oil on board, 50.0 x 38.0 cm Melbourne based Heidi Yardley takes us to Germany today. Images of this iconic bridge have haunted Heidi’s imagination for decades and again like so many of us, she hopes to visit one day.... I have painted the enigmatic bridge ‘Rakotzbrücke’, situated in Kromlauer Park in Germany. Commissioned in 1860, the bridge is famous for its shape and reflection which combine to create the illusion of a perfect circle. This vision speaks to me of the relationship between the tangible world and the murky, subterranean layers of our unconscious minds. For purchase enquiries please call the gallery. + 61 7 3254 1855.
