22.01.2022 'Dawn Patrol' (Oil on Canvas) The warrior and her beast. I wanted to paint an image that displayed the relationship between male and female characters in our world. It’s a symbiotic and essential relationship for our survival and virtually every living creature and living thing on the planet. I chose a mix of main characters because I wanted to portray a working relationship between the players and not limit its application to humans. The female warrior and the male tiger tog...ether are a very powerful. Both are completely responsible for their own contribution in the partnership but as individuals, they are less formidable. The individual rolls they play are unique to themselves, but together the unite brilliantly. In the painting, I have included many symbols of sex and gender including the relationship of the female soldier mounted on the male Sabretooth Tiger to the phallic towers built on the edge of the v shaped valley and the bridge linking the towers to the girl, these symbols are independent but when combined, complete a more powerful single entity. The composition starts with the central characters. The eye would fall to the warrior and then to the tiger. You’re lead to the left by the tigers direction where I pull you up through the castle towers and up to the top of the painting. The crossing direction of the clouds brings you along to the sun, the central light source. From here, your lead back down through the painting by the animals tail and water fall at the rear. 20.01.2022 'Elemental Leadbreak' (Oil on Canvas) When elements meet, all hell breaks loose. Who else can play a flaming guitar? In this painting I have crossed the two elements of fire and water in an effort to express their relationships to each other. Each can destroy each other, but when they are united, they form a new entity.... I painted this one to learn how to paint something made from something else and portray the initial characters using the elements of the second. Water and fire are opposites but when they mix, the form a united entity. To see all of my paintings and illustrations, please go to website: https://jasservices.com.au/product/elemental-leadbreak/

17.01.2022 'The King Of Dreams' (Oil on Canvas) This was the first time I painted anything. The idea came from a story I had created about an imaginary world where playing games in your dreams like this lead to physical changes in the characters real life. In this painting, the black king is in checkmate. He has been placed in this position by the white queen who shows reluctance and affection toward him and he's holding a Joker wild card in his right hand. He knows this is not the end.... There will be another game. Being the first time I had painted, let alone used oils, this painting took me quite a while. Initially I painted all of the characters faces in the amphitheatre. It took me weeks, after work, sitting in my chair, watching TV and painting. It wasn't until I stood back and looked at it before I realised the faces in the back stood out so I had to blur them out. Lesson one.....stand back and look at your work regularly! To see the this and the rest of my paintings. please follow this link to my website: https://jasservices.com.au/art-gallery-carousel/

17.01.2022 'Crossing The T' (Graphite Pencil Illustration) Perfected by British Admiral Horatio Nelson, the ‘Crossing the T’ attack begins with a line of war ships crossing in front of the enemy vessels to resemble the shape of the letter ‘T’. As they bring their guns to bare, they fire them individually as the target passes into range. As the vast majority of ships of that era’s guns were side mounted, it meant the engaged enemy could only reply with a small number of front mounted we...apons. The process basically rewarded the attacker with the time to aim and to use their weapons accurately while restricting the enemy to the use of their smallest and least effective guns. This would heavily damage these ships sail and leave them vulnerable to further destruction and their eventual sinking. During these times, cargo vessels were forced to arm to defend themselves against relentless attacks from foreign navies and pirates alike. However, these ships were no match for 'Ships of the line'. When I started this illustration, the question I had to answer was; How do two ships powered by the same wind, pass each other sideways in a broadside battle? After doing some research I found that they actually don't. Most of that's just Hollywood. In fact, they cross at narrower angles, but never 90 or 180 degree's unless they deliberately turn out of the wind and sacrifice their forward motion. This illustration shows, to my best ability, how the ships would have most likely passed. At an angle that allows for the maximum advantage of motion and firepower together. It shows a Spanish cargo vessel under attack from a British ship of the line. British vessels were know to drop the enemies sail on the first pass with the wind direction coming from the enemy side. That way, their cannon fired high. If they wanted to destroy the ship and not board it, they would then tack back to cross behind and fire through the back of the enemy vessel sending shot length ways down the ships hull in an attempt to ignite their gunpowder stores. If the ship hasn't exploded into flame, they would then pass along the other side of the ship with the wind pushing their vessel low on the enemies side so their shot would hit the vessel low in the water and sink it. It was a brutal end to a ship and usually her whole crew. In fact they really had no chance, made worse by the fact that the pursuit of their ship may have taken days and every man on board knew they were dead if they couldn't loose their pursuer. In this illustration, I particularly learned how to illustrate using a pencils hard and black characteristics for effect rather than hand pressure. I have a tendency to be heavy handed and have stuffed drawings in the past due to this. There is a fine line between pressure and graphite hardness that when used correctly, make for a satisfying result. 16.01.2022 'The Gunslinger' (Oil on Canvas) He’s the gunslingercool.calm.his enlarged guns are about to be drawn by his lightning fast hands. The light is behind him, you cant see his eyes but you know he see’s you. He will not miss and you know it!... This oil on canvas depicts the Stephan King character Roland the Gunslinger from his Dark Tower series. As a fan of his stories and particularly this series, I painted Roland as I saw him. The paintings composition consists of a rear and exaggerated light source mostly to convince the viewer the character is immersed in it and therefore feel he’s hard to see. I assisted that effect with the use of opposing colours in areas effected by that light on the side of his hat, face and rear areas of his coat. I have also exaggerated the size of his guns and hands for eye focus, and touched gun to hand to gain the danger effect. I narrowed his hips and inflated his shoulders to create eye direction down through his arms to the guns. I felt it was important for my character remain detached and cold so I hid his eyes from view. You know they’re there and he’s looking directly at you. In this image, I'm trying to trigger the emotion of fear or threat from the viewer as well as confidence in the characters resolve and ability on first glance. I used aspects like exaggeration and direction leading lines to key threats like the guns as well as removing other objects completely to allow the viewers mind to fill in the blanks. 16.01.2022 'Butterfly Lady' (Life Drawing in Pastel) Starting as a 30 minute sketch from a live model, I completed the image later in my studio. The model was a very relaxed character who just got comfortable and nodded off. Her personality was quite disengaged so I used the the blues and purples to highlight this solemn and distant attitude. When I completed the image, I wasn’t sure why I had drawn it so small on the page. On returning to my studio, I completed the painting in a fant...asy style and placed her in a scene where she is alone and indifferent. I have used contrasting colours in my character and background to highlight the independence and detachment she displayed to her surroundings. This painting was entered and won fist prize in section at the Bundaberg Art Show 2010 in Bundaberg, Queensland. 16.01.2022 'Fred and Ginger' (Oil on Canvas) I painted this image after finding some old B/W photo’s of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers dancing in a film from the 1930's. I greatly admire the skill and professionalism of these two movie stars of their era. I represented these magnificent performers in colour and placed them onto the elaborate but plain lilac coloured background. This painting is about brilliant talent and the way it shines, making the most elaborate scene seem plain and... ordinary. I love these guys. This is one of my favourites. In this painting, I have tried to describe my respect and admiration for these characters using colour effect. The plainness of the monotoned background portraying the most elaborate dance floors throws the focus to the full colour characters. 13.01.2022 'Freedom Dancer' (Life drawing in pastel) This pastel work started as a life drawing and was finished later in my studio. The problem I had with this pose was how hard it was to too hold, so we had to start stop start stop for the entire time. This girl was beautiful. A student and dancer who came up with this stunning ‘breaking free’ pose. When I got back to my studio, I completed the image with solid stone columns behind her to emphasise the ‘breaking away’ element an...d the light source in front to create direction. My aim was to enhance this sense of ‘movement toward freedom’ by locking my model to weight and burden and then contrasting that with clear light direction and the feeling of movement towards it. I separated the character and the stone pillars by adding the cape to describe the movement and enhanced it with colour contrast. I have done life drawing regularly for many years. Its a fantastic way to enhance your skills in sketch and observation. I have learnt technical skills, colour use and artistic confidence. To challenge myself, I use colour and form to enhance and describe the character with the aim of giving later viewers an idea of the models personality and mood. 13.01.2022 'Thoroughbred Portrait' (Graphite Pencil Illustration) I originally drew this graphite pencil sketch for stickers but the image also proved to be a popular print in its raw form. I rendered the image in the computer into different colour options for stickers and it has proven to be a popular and long selling product. ... 12.01.2022 JAS Stickers (UV Resistant, Waterproof, Indoor or Outdoor Vinyl Stickers) I first started in this 'sticker game' about 20 years ago after I was asked to draw some bikini girl stickers for some guys manufacturing them using the then new technologies in large format printing systems. Basically, large inkjet printers using advanced ink types on a vast array of media. The greatest thing about them though was the digital tech. These were industrial quality, plate-less printing ...machines. No more minimum printing volumes that come with offset and screen printing. We bought in with the emergence of Solvent ink systems. My printer uses a nitrocellulose based ink, similar to a type of paint we used to use in my trade on cars called Duco and it does it at 1440dpi. Brilliant. Over the years since we have worn many hats in our business and the stickers have always been an important part. We sold them through Autobarn, City Beach and other retail stores around Australia for many years until we were China'd out of it about 10 years ago. Not giving up easily and liking what we do too much to let it go, we set up many market stalls and went online. Initially with our own website but then to eBay and Etsy stores and finally in 2017 we established the first Amazon FBA store in the US. We now have Amazon stores in nine countries. Last year we obtained the Trademark for JAS Stickers at Amazons request. Selling things online is as complex and demanding as selling them through traditional retail outlets. Trying to establish a brand is an important part of either platform. We are only at the beginning of the online selling thing but already its changing the way we operate and creating a sense of unlimited potential. The best part is, people are cruising around all over the world with my art on their stuff. Love it! 12.01.2022 'The Kookaburras View' (Oil on Canvas) Tamborine Mountain in the South East region of Queensland Australia is the gateway to what’s known as the Scenic Rim. This very popular area was formed over 25 million years ago by huge volcanic eruptions. With rich soils and high altitudes, these mountains have evolved into the most beautiful subtropical rainforests with lush vegetation and animal life. It’s one of the most beautiful places in an area full of beauty. Looking out into th...is beautiful valley, its hard to imagine it was once a lava filled volcanic cauldron. The viewpoint of the painting is from the western side of the mountain. After getting started, I saw a kookaburra, a native Australian bird, leave his branch at the top of a tree and soar down into the valley below. I couldn’t help but wonder how magnificent that would be. I decided to change the viewpoint of the painting to include the kookaburras and their perspective of the valley. Looking at the valley, I could see lots of traces of human development like distant buildings, roads and fences but I decided the image really needed to show its natural beauty so I painted it as it would have been. This was the first time I painted a serious landscape. This one was a pleasure to do as we actually lived on the mountain at the time and I saw this view on a daily basis. 12.01.2022 'Windsong' (Pastel on Paper) The irresistible sound of the siren song calls to the sailor’s and brings them into peril. The painting shows the galleon heading to disaster lead by a beautiful Mermaid. Her image, like her song is in the eyes of the beholder from her face in the sun to her tail half in the rock and sea. Beautiful, yet dangerous. She is made from the sea, the land and the sky and still only exists in the imagination, but powerful and dangerous to all who believe.... 07.01.2022 '15 Seconds' (Graphite Pencil Illustration) This illustration depicts a dog fight between British Supermarine Spitfire Mk1’s and German Messerschmitt BF 109E’s during the Battle of Britain in England 1940. These iconic world war 2 fighter aircraft battled for superiority in the skies over England in preparation to a German amphibious invasion of the British mainland. The battle was a decisive victory for the British and the subsequent invasion was stopped. The title ’15 Secon...ds’ refers to the time it takes to empty the Spitfires eight .303" browning machine guns from full. In the illustration I have tried to get the technical details as correct as possible. The models of all aircraft were specific to a time period and during the war, many model advances were made in a very short period of time. I consulted my local RSL (Returned and Services League. A support organisation for men and women who have served (all wars) or are serving in the Defence Force). From there I gained accurate knowledge of the era along with references to design, armaments, livery and specifications of all of the aircraft. The original illustration took me some time to do and I enjoyed doing this drawing and learning about this period of time very much. I learned a great deal in doing this drawing. Creating the effect of movement involves recreating the limitations of human sight accurately. We are not actually aware, but all movement is viewed with a level of 'blurriness'. When we try to remember what we saw later, it tends to be a clear, still image. However, if you draw it that way, it looks fake or 'modelled'. To draw it realistically, you have to include the natural faults of our eyesight filtered through ever changing light effects, reflection and movement of the characters you are drawing. 07.01.2022 'Rainbows and Reds' (Oil on Canvas) This oil on canvas painting portrays on of my favourite Australian native birds the Rainbow Lorikeet, a species of Parrot found along the eastern sea board of Australia from South Australia to northern Queensland. Also in Papua New Guinea and parts of Indonesia. They are a medium sized parrot about 25 to 30cm tall when fully grown. They feed on pollen mostly from Eucalypts and berries and fruits. Both males and females have this brilliant c...olouring and only people who know the species well can tell the difference. Naturally, the Rainbow ‘Lorrie as they are commonly known, has a great fan club. They are a highly intelligent and affectionate bird with a comical personality' They have been known to live up to 30 years. In the wild, they are also feisty character who defend their territory and nesting well. We have many living around our house and I regularly see them attacking larger predatory birds in packs during nesting. Their comical character makes them great entertainment, beautiful to look at with a loud and excited nature. My painting comes from separate photos of birds I have taken at my home and put together to form a complete image. The tree they sit on is a Red Flowering Gum tree, a Eucalypt that has these beautiful red flowers, a favourite of the Lorries. I have tried to portray these feisty enthusiastic characters in the comfortable setting of the red flowering gum, just as we see them in real life. They are an awesome native Australian. 06.01.2022 'Glenrowan' (Oil on Canvas) The last stand of Australian outlaw bushranger Ned Kelly. Born to Irish parents in Beveridge, Victoria in December 1854 he was forged by the corruption of the colonial police powers in the newly declared British colony of Van Diemens Land. Declared an ‘Outlaw’ by the then government meaning he was longer protected under the law, it was therefore legal for anyone to persecute or kill him. His bushranging career came to an end at an Inn in Glenrowan,... Victoria in June 1880 where he and his gang were surrounded by officers of the law and forced a final shootout. He was captured and sentenced to death by hanging. Said to be his final words, Such is Life has become an acclaimed and lauded saying throughout the Australia and a symbol of rebellion. His story has become legend and he is considered a folk hero. Ned Kelly was hanged in the Old Melbourne Gaol on the 11th November 1880. He was 25 years old. My painting depicts the character in a brazen and challenging pose, taking the fight to his opponents. Complete defiance towards a stronger enemy in an act of rebellion, belligerence and contempt of that authority. The flash of gun flare is only real source of light and illuminates his helmet, armour and guns every time he fires. His silhouette flashing with intense glimpses of a serous murderer, a menacing and threatening adversary to his enemies. 06.01.2022 'Wedge Tail Eagle' (Oil on Canvas) The Wedge Tail Eagle is Australia’s largest predatory bird. It’s found throughout the continent as well as southern New Guinea and Indonesia. It can have a wingspan of nearly 3 metres but averages 2.5 metres fully grown. In the past, its been seen as a pest by people on the land and know to take baby lambs so it was hunted and poisoned to virtual extinction. They are now a protected species and their numbers are recovering although its still... classified as an endangered species. Although common throughout Australia, its generally found in woodlands and open country, easier for hunting and typically nests in high trees with a good viewpoint of the surrounding countryside.
