24.01.2022 "Hey Christian, have a look at the biscuit competition we're running." "Yeah good, great idea, that'll be fi-ARE THOSE MY SAWS?!" The Big Boss is putting in practice to try and get at least one of his saws back He has his work cut out for him judging by the entries so far Anyone for bamboo biscuits? Entries close this arvo - for those who want to sharpen up their sawing technique there's the rest of the day to submit a biscuit
22.01.2022 Father's Day Gift Idea! This is a pretty cool gift to give.... The ‘Its my knife’ kit has everything you need to make a knife without all the required expertise. Transform the pieces in the kit into a beautiful work of art, or a perfect functional piece. This folding knife is precisely designed for easy-to-use and ideal for outdoor activities like camping and barbecuing. ... 22.01.2022 A selection of the tools used to harvest and prepare grass for traditionally thatched Japanese houses.
17.01.2022 A little bit of carving fun with our new and utterly brilliant Japanese Whittling knife. This little fella is built stout but still has an incredibly fine blade grind, made possible by the laminated HSS edge. The handle is a wider diameter than the rest of our range, giving it a bit more of a sloyd feel in the hand and it all comes protected by an elegant tan leather sheath. ... We think it's the best whittling all-purpose whittling knife in the shop, and it's $79. the 'gram won't let us tag it (perhaps a little pointy for the algorithm), so a search on the JTA site for "whittling" is the way to find them. 16.01.2022 Curls get the girls What are you working on this weekend?
15.01.2022 Greg's put together this lovely little coffee table for himself. In between planing the top (all kanna finish) and rushing it over to his place we managed to squeeze off a few photos. This top is a two-piece arrangement that slides onto the base from each side with concealed sliding dovetails - a pretty magical joint that is by nature impossible to actually photograph and negates the need for screws, inserts or any other fixing. The top is macrocarpa (the cypress one, not th...e native one) and the base is blackwood and blackbutt. Wedges to be trimmed and adjusted once it's assembled in its new home. A great example of the furniture achievable with Japanese inspired joinery. Nice one Greg! @simpson_tcd
15.01.2022 This just in - AWESOME STICKERS. It's all well and good to work with quality tools, but when you need that little bit of extra toolbox bling, a sticker comes in handy REAL fast. These ones are the tough vinyl variety that stick like the proverbial to a blanket. Two text varieties - "daiku" (carpenter) and "kaijiya" (blacksmith). Mitch has rigorously tested the very first two by sticking them to other people's stuff and the shop apprentice. The verdict? Delicious. This first batch will be gifted with online orders as they go out the door, if you order with us over the next couple of weeks keep an eye out for one in your box
14.01.2022 There are some nice tools round these parts at the moment.

05.01.2022 Owning a beautiful Japanese kitchen knife is a pleasure that every aspiring chef should be able to enjoy - however, acquiring the necessary accoutrements to maintain that knife sharp and ready to go can be a process. To make that a little easier, we are now bundling our beautiful Gyuto knife with a smooth cutting, hard wearing Imanishi combination waterstone that will allow the factory edge to be brought to it's full potential, as well as a bottle of camellia oil that can be applied to protect the edge from patination between uses. This set can represent the beginning of an expanding collection of quality Japanese steel, or a self-contained kit for making meal preparation enjoyable and satisfying.
03.01.2022 Thatched roof houses are a rare but beloved sight in the Japanese countryside, with some of the more well known thatched villages attracting plenty of local and international tourism. Christian's current home in Japan is located in a village that maintains a number of thatched buildings, and so last week he was able to attend a workshop at the local school teaching the kids (and him) about how the grass is selected and dried, how the bamboo frames are bound, and then how ...the thatch is attached to the frame. The kids got to thatch a frame for themselves, and Christian got to admire the tools - especially the hand woven hard cane sheaths. Also: that school gym! Timber heaven. See more
03.01.2022 "Got some axes here you'll like," he said, "I'll send you through a video tonight." Thanks Christian. Never change.

02.01.2022 We have 4 spots left for our Kumiko class next Wed 25th and Thursday the 26th. The last class we ran sold out very quickly so if you missed out grab a spot. "Hello Mitch, Just a quick message to say thanks for hosting the Kumiko course.... I really enjoyed the course. I thought Jason did an excellent job of breaking the task down in to simple logical steps that were easy to understand. The friendly relaxed atmosphere coupled with the great support provided by Jason, yourself and Tom really made it a pleasure and a great fun 2 days. I would also like to thank you for spending the time to show me some tips and tricks on sharpening, I am sure we barely scratched the surface but it was most informative. Kind regards, Peter" https://www.japanesetools.com.au//kumiko-coasters-with-jas
01.01.2022 Competition time! Make the most beautiful biscuit you can and win one of these beautiful saws! Melbourne has entered stage 4 restrictions, and to keep our friends down south occupied we'd like to throw down a challenge - cut the thinnest slice of timber you can off the end of whatever wood you have lying around. The rules are thus;... -Hand saws only. No batteries, power cables, air compressors or other non-legit powering of your cutting. - Biscuits must be whole and uninterrupted - no holes, ripped edges, valleys or mountains. -Post a photo or video of your beautifully schnipped piece of end grain and tag us so that we can see it. -Extra points awarded for creativity. Whatever that means, we'll leave open for interpretation. -Winners will be decided by the JTA team on the videos/photos available. We're a fickle bunch, so any effort will be seriously considered if they are entertaining. Winners announced Friday. Open to anyone and everyone. Two saws awarded to Victorian entrants and the final to an entrant from the rest of Australia. Let's get cutting! See more
