25.01.2022 As regional restrictions ease within Western Australia, it's time again to cast our eyes to the open road. It’s been strange for me, and kind of refreshing, being home for this long... and though we’re still keeping inside the WA bubble for now, when that bubble includes places like Esperance, Margaret River, Broome, Ningaloo... it ain’t a bad place to be at all. I’m excited to get back to exploring this is the place I call home... I know I’ve barely scratched the surface #wanderoutyonder #thisiswa #seeaustralia

22.01.2022 Join me this Thursday for a virtual session I'm hosting with Propel Youth Arts WA. I'll be chatting with photography wizards Demas Rusli, Craig Parry Photography and Michelle Grace Hunder : Photographer about our favourite photos and how exactly they were pulled off. I'll also be quizzing them on their best advice for young creatives. This one will be great for emerging photographers to tune into, register your interest here: https://www.propel.org.au/kickstart-virtu/jarrad-seng-panel
22.01.2022 The Ghan is an iconic Australian rail journey that takes you 3000km through the heart of Australia from Darwin to Adelaide (or vice versa). It stops at some gorgeous outback wonders along the way, like Katherine Gorge, Simpsons Gap, Alice Springs and Coober Pedy. Here are a few favourites from my recent trip with Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions. What a unique way to see Australia!! Northern Territory - Australia's Outback www.instagram.com/jarradseng
22.01.2022 So... it's early 2018. I'm in Antarctica, just casually, and we've just made our very first continental landing after a week or so at sea. After taking my obligatory naked snow jumping picture with the Antarctica flag, I wander off my own for a little bit to take in the view (and take photos of my feet, as usual). Out of the corner of my eye, I see a couple holding hands walking off into the distance. It's super adorable. I have no idea who they are, never met them, never spo...ken to them. A normal response might probably be to smile and think, 'that's nice'. But we all know I'm not quite normal in the head. I'm a level 5000 creep master. So of course I put on the telephoto lens, zoom right in and start clicking. Not just once or twice... but I follow them to a rock and get a few more. They just looked *extra* cute and in love for some reason. I mean, no one is that happy in that kind of cold. Anyway, mischief managed, I go back to taking photos of the icebergs and seals. I forget about it until later that night, back on the ship, word starts spreading that an Austrian couple had got engaged earlier in the day. Oh my goodness. It was them, wasn't it. Turns out, Wolfgang had only just proposed to Franziska mere minutes before I took those photos. They were so stoked and had no idea I was there (obviously. I ain't no amateur creep). I promised to send over the photos as soon as I got home. Which I did. And that could have been the end of the story. But a few months later a picture lands in my inbox. They'd blown up the photo mega size to hang over their bed. Amazing! And *that* could have been a nice end to the story too. But why stop there So last weekend, a year or so after the proposal, I flew to Austria to shoot their special day in Salzburg. And while I couldn't actually understand one word of the ceremony... and spent more time in planes and airports (67 hours) than on the ground... it was always going to be worth it. Congratulations Franziska and Wolfgang! www.iknowaplace.net www.jarradseng.com
21.01.2022 If you’ve been following for a while, you might have seen Emily Kikta pop up on various collaborations (like Passenger’s To Be Free music video). We met years back on one of my photography workshops in Iceland. A few weeks ago I was supposed to fly over to New York to shoot Emily and Peter’s wedding though unfortunately it couldn’t go ahead quite just yet. But I had an idea. Despite a horrendous time difference, we managed to get on FaceTime for an impromptu virtual shoot. ...Me at home still curled up in bed, and them on a NYC rooftop at sunset. A placeholder wedding session until whenever we can actually come together to celebrate. Now since I wasn’t flying over to the States anymore, my calendar was free to take on a different gig - a massive road trip up the coast of WA. My brain started doing that thing where it comes up with ridiculous and very inconvenient ideas. Enter: the life size 2.5m tall timber cutout. Also known as the #1 most awkward and annoying shaped thing to pack into a campervan for two weeks. The plan wasn’t without its hiccups. but nothing a little duct tape couldn’t fix :P. EMily, peter - hope you enjoyed the roadie these photos will have to do until the big day comes!! www.instagram.com/jarradseng Follow @emilykika and @peteraltubewalker - both incredible dancers with the NYC Ballet. Thanks @brooke.blurton @jordywydra @joshball_images and JP Woodworks for your help along the way!
16.01.2022 Both photography and travel for me, are all about the people you meet. The busker on a New York subway, the Cueca dancer in Santiago, the sushi chef in Tokyo. Earlier in the year I travelled around the world with American Express and Qantas to do just that - dive into the streets just to see who we could find. The power of photography to connect people is something quite special. The Qantas American Express Ultimate Card can bring these experiences closer, earning up to 1.2...5 Qantas Points for every $1 spent on eligible Card purchases. 10.01.2022 We're in unprecedented times. I'm currently working out how I'm going to get home from overseas, and then navigate self isolation and the total cancellation of two months of work. The next few months are going to be tough (for my freelancer friends in particular). But with every challenge comes an opportunity. How many times have you felt like work and life were hurtling by at such a speed that you were bound to lose control any second? I can't really remember a time I haven...'t felt like that. As much hurt and difficulty this crisis will bring - it's a circuit breaker. Maybe this is the moment that stops us all in our tracks and forces us to slow down, reevaluate and grow. As freelancers, we almost never afford ourselves the time and space. Let's make the most of this time in isolation... - Develop those personal projects that you've put put off for years because you 'didn't have time'. All the time in the world now. - Update your website and portfolio. I *know* it needs it. - Get your taxes and accounting in order. It's not as painful as it sounds - Read the book you bought at the airport but never read because watching Fast on the Furious on the plane was less effort - Reconnect with those in your industry, workshops ideas, create collaboration plans. We're all in this together. - Restyle your home office space. You're gonna be closely aquainted this year - Learn that skill that had always seemed too time confusing and painful and why would I when I can pay someone who knows better (*cough* AfterEffects). There are so many digital resources out there - Review your business model. How can you amplify the strengths and mitigate the weaknesses. - Create art. Consume art. Finish that song, edit that video. Read a book. Watch a film. Write a postcard to an old friend. Focus on yourself, and emerge from this stronger... stay safe peeps x P.S. I'm working on a 14 day challenge to work through these ideas and more once I land back home. Feel free to join in @ Freelancer's Guide to Self Isolation

01.01.2022 I’ve been a little quiet on current events because firstly who wants to hear from me and secondly I wanted to think carefully about a meaningful and tangible way to contribute to the fight for equality, justice and reconciliation in Australia. I think that the best way I can do this is by amplifying Indigenous voices through direct funding of creative projects. I am committing $5000 (5 x $1000 grants) directly to young Indigenous artists. If you, or an artist you know needs ...some extra funding to create work or bring a project to life - whether this be photography, music, a podcast, film, painting, writing get in touch and tell me about what you’re working on here: https://forms.gle/ZwLMnQBe4VZZHyi2A Creativity and storytelling is how I express myself, it’s how I am seen and heard. It’s why I even have this platform and why you’re reading this now. Creative expression is empowering and the truth is, the more access to resources (time, money, contacts) the more opportunity there is for your voice to be heard. It’s not a crazy amount, but I know from experience how much difference a little extra funding can make to an early career artist. I had to crowdfund my first exhibition ten years ago because I couldn’t afford the printing costs on my own (and thank you if you've been around since then!) I think it’s more important than ever to listen and learn from First Nations voices and I hope this helps in some small way (These portraits are of some of the beautiful kids I’ve met on my travels and work in remote communities over the years) -- www.instagram.com/jarradseng www.jarradseng.com
