21.01.2022 This is my most widely shared post. And rightly so, it’s an important one. These are prewriting patterns, with the average (not prescribed) age at which child...ren are developmentally ready to achieve these patterns listed below them in years and months. Being able to process visual information and produce a movement in response (e.g. copying these prewriting patterns or letter formations), is known as visual motor integration. Note that an X is not typically achieved until 4 years 11 months, and a triangle at 5 years 3 months. If a child can’t form these basic shapes...then they probably won’t be able to form letters. It is quite concerning then that there are 3 year 7 month olds starting formal schooling, where they’re expected to write. Not only are their visual motor integration skills not developed enough, their hands are also physically under-developed. In addition, recognising letters, understanding phonics and beginning to read are all needed in order for a child to write meaningfully, skills which children starting kindy typically don’t have. We also know that when a child learns something that doesn’t hold meaning, it‘s unlikely to stick. So if you have a 3-4 year old who spontaneously asks or attempts to write letters, that’s great; otherwise, there is no need to initiate or worry about this. Unfortunately there is a misconception, particularly with the way that the current curriculum stands, that earlier is better. Earlier is not always better. 16.01.2022 I personally love the term neurodiversity, as many children I meet don’t have official labels yet, but their family, educators, etc. notice their different wa...y of engaging in learning. My passion is to ensure these children get the most out of their educational settings by putting in place strategies and accommodations that support their specific learning style. See more

13.01.2022 A pretty early language milestone that kids with delayed or disordered language frequently miss is asking questions. This is a skill many parents don’t realize ...kids should be doing at such an early age, but kids should be asking questions pretty early on! And these questions should be increasing in complexity before the age of 3. See more

12.01.2022 Hi there! My name is Jasmine. I am 23 years old, graduated last year with a double degree in a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) and currently working full time as an Early Childhood Teacher. I have a current Working with Children's Check, Police Check, Anaphylaxis, First Aid and CPR certificate. I currently work 8am-5pm Monday through to Friday but am available after 5pm week nights, all weekend, am available for stay overs and have my full license and my ...own car. I have worked in both Primary schools and Early Childhood centres and have been doing child-minding over the past 10 years. I am very passionate about working with children and providing them with meaningful learning experiences where possible, so much so I voluntarily went to Nepal in 2015 for 5 weeks to teach in schools and awarded a scholarship in 2017 to teach in Cambodia for 2 weeks in 2017. My rates do change depending upon your location, how many children you have, which service you require and when. If you are within a 20km radius of my location and have less than 3 children I generally charge: $20 per hour when 24+ hours are booked (discounted rate during sleeping hours). $25 per hour when 2+ hours are booked. $30 when only 1 hour of child-minding is booked so you can go shopping etc. Full days and stay over prices are negotiated depending upon what is needed and what hours are required. I am more than happy to work around you and what you and your family need, whether that involves stay overs or just an hour in the afternoons. The best form of contact is to click Message Now or SMS my mobile. Kind regards, Jasmine.

11.01.2022 Keep safe this summer!

09.01.2022 I hope in a time like this everyone is staying as safe as they can and doing their bit to help protect others. Some ideas for kids at home in addition to the websites your school uses, e.g. reading eggs, studyladder, etc, the following might be helpful. Get your kids reading, writing and doing maths problems everyday. Read a recipe, write a recipe, cook, and talk about the chemical change that occurs during cooking. Ask questions such as what do you notice, what do you w...onder? Cooking also includes maths, double the recipe, halve the recipe and get the kids to work out the portions of each ingredient. Write the new recipe out. Watch a documentary and discuss this with your kids. Ask them opened ended questions about what you’re watching that require a detailed responses rather than a yes or no answer. Take a virtual tour on google maps/google earth, find famous landmarks and explore them remotely. 05.01.2022 Work out your child’s strengths and go from there rather than focusing on what they can’t do

01.01.2022 When writing skills are underdeveloped it can lead to frustration and resistance. Hand and finger strength: An ability to exert force against resistance using ...the hands and fingers that allows the necessary muscle power for controlled movement of the pencil. Crossing the mid-line: The ability to cross the imaginary line running from a person’s nose to pelvis that divides the body into left and right sides. Pencil grasp: The efficiency of how the pencil is held, allowing age appropriate pencil movement generation. Hand eye coordination: The ability to process information received from the eyes to control, guide and direct the hands in the performance of a task such as handwriting. Bilateral integration: Using two hands together with one hand leading (e.g. holding and moving the pencil with the dominant hand while the other hand helps by holding the writing paper). Upper body strength: The strength and stability provided by the shoulder to allow controlled hand movement for good pencil control. Object manipulation: The ability to skillfully manipulate tools (including holding and moving pencils and scissors) and controlled use of everyday tools (such as a toothbrush, hairbrush, cutlery). Visual perception: The brain’s ability to interpret and make sense of visual images seen by the eyes, such as letters and numbers.
