14.01.2022 The ISA BROWN rant.... It's been a while since I made an ISA post. The ISA is a Commercial Crossbreed at the height of what's genetically possible for fast turn...around commercial layers. They are specifically designed to lay as many eggs as possible over the shortest amount of time on the smallest amount of feed to lay ratio. Do we support the ISA brown Industry? If you own an ISA brown you support the industry. It's that simple. Let me explain a little... Years ago, before we were taught/shamed/encouraged to "Save an ISA" or the marketing ploy "Rescue Chicken", it actually cost the Isa manufacturers money to "dispose of their waste". Now instead of 12c per cull, they get $2 per bird to the on sellers who then sell to you from $15 to $30 to line their pockets. Good business really. Wish I had have thought of it. Are there any good ISA Browns? Most certainly. Ever though your still supporting the Industry the impact is lessened if you buy 6 month olds to 1 year olds. Usually these are bought by growers at a day of 2 old and they grow them up in a better environment. You can get good birds like this. I have an ISA Brown Rooster! Well, no you don't. You have a crossbreed that is not an ISA. The ISA is created by breeding 2 different color chickens together so the boys come out 1 color and the girls another. This way they can cull the boys at day 1 without need to feed them. The ISA Roosters that are apparently seen will not breed true to color and your not making your own ISA's. They are a byproduct. I'm going to cross an ISA with my Pure Breeds so I get better egg production.: This is not true, the ISA is at the end of what can be done genetically with egg laying chickens. The only thing you do when you cross an ISA with a Pure Breed is to dilute the Pure breed. This brings me to my point. There are so many Endangered Chicken Breeds in Australia that need real RESCUE to save them from extinction. Who really needs your help? The big companies? Or the chickens that may vanish from our lands. Edited to add this:
