23.01.2022 What on earth are prebiotics? Aren’t they PROBIOTICS? No, they are two different things but they are related. Prebiotics feed good bacteria in the gut. The good bacteria don’t just exist there. They are living organisms, who just like us, need food. We can manipulate the types of bacteria living in our gut based on what we eat. If we eat lots of sugar and high fats we encourage harmful microbes to flourish which may mean our disease risk increases. ... Prebiotic foods include most of our plant based foods. Foods that are especially beneficial include the following: - leeks - artichoke - potato and sweet potato - banana - kiwi fruit - oats - linseed (ground) - asparagus - red and blue berries - cocoa (amen!!) - garlic and onion We can use therapeutic prebiotics in clinic including partial hydrolysed guar gum (PHGG). Sometimes we will give specific probiotics along side prebiotics to get a therapeutic effect, depending on what we are treating. It’s certainly not a one sized fits all approach. Please take this as general advice. For a personalised program and specific support around a gut issue please make an appointment. Ph: 02 57135585

20.01.2022 Vitamin B12 supplements are not all the same. Here’s the good, bad and the ugly of the B12 market... This actually is a complicated topic. As there are so many variables for how someone may absorb vitamin B12 due to genetics, gut health, diet and autoimmunity. We discussed some of these on a previous post. With supplements- we see a chemical name such as cyano or hydroxo before we see the name cobalamin. Cobalamin is the actual B12 vitamin part. The chemical name is what it’...s attached to inside the supplement. Each type of these forms is absorbed differently in the human body. A general rule of thumb is an oral cyanocobalamin form of Vitamin B12 supplement generally has poor absorption and poor conversion in the body as this in an inactive vitamin B12 form. Have a look at your multivitamin or supplement at home and you will probably see this form! In clinic we like to use either a hydroxocobalamin or a methylcobalamin. Methylcobalamin, in general being the best absorbed Vitamin B12 on the Australian market. Methylcobalamin needs less conversion to the active form in the body. This conversion is the part genetics play a role in, and we can test these genetics if required. Liposomal (fat soluble ) spray or sublingual (chewable) tablets are the most effective oral ways of taking vitamin B12. For extremely low Vitamin B12 levels injections are a good idea. In some cases we will arrange transdermal creams for some patients. With anything, we are always best to determine why a patient is low in Vitamin B12 rather than just rely on supplements. Is it because they have pernicious anaemia? Genetic factors? Undiagnosed celiac disease? Gut issues? Surgery? Diet choices? So if you are concerned make an appointment and we can guide you as to the right support, especially for you as an individual. Ph: 0257135585
20.01.2022 The other afternoon my son had a mega meltdown. He is 9. He just got overwhelmed and cranky about doing his assignment for school. We eventually calmed him a bit, we fed him dinner and he was like a different child. I realised he had only had one biscuit since coming home from school as he was just too interested in playing outside. He hadn’t eaten all his lunch that day either. Whilst I could understand he didn’t want to stop playing and do his homework, his meltdown was mor...e than an average whinge. I realised his blood sugar was super low, he was lacking a good protein source since his breakfast and his little body and brain was starved of glucose and he just couldn’t cope with more stress. I’m sharing this not to shame my son, but to point out the importance of good food for kids, and how sometimes we contribute behaviours to other things, however sometimes we miss the obvious- the role of good blood sugar, good nutrition for sustaining our children’s growing brains and bodies. My go to tip is to always include protein with every meal- especially breakfast and lunch. Protein sources can include eggs, meat, tofu, hommos, nuts or nut butter, seeds, whey or pea protein smoothie. It doesn’t have to be hard. Avoiding as much refined carbohydrate as possible - ditch the white bread, white sugar and processed snacks. If you need more ideas to feed your kids better quality nutrition, or are concerned about your child’s behaviour book an appointment with our fabulous nutritionist Casey. Phone- 0257135585.

13.01.2022 Did you know that not all people can use folate as well as others? This includes the popular supplement folic acid. Why is this important? Because folate is vital for our cell health and turnover, for making happy brain chemistry, for helping the body detoxify itself, for healthy blood vessels, energy and for healthy red blood cells. Most people know folate is especially important for pregnancy. Folate is vital for the methylation cycle, which happens as part of our biochemi...cal reactions inside our cells. Folate must be converted in the body to its active form. This is called methyltetrahydrofolate. The enzyme methyltetrahydrofolate reductase is responsible for this via the gene called MTHFR. Some people cannot do this conversion as well as others, even by up to 70% less than others! This is due to variants on the MTHFR gene. So for some people, folic acid is not always the best form for them to take as they cannot break this form down into the active folate very well. This can lead to other issues. So the good news is we can test MTHFR gene and work out what folate suits you best. We can also test other genes which impact on your wellbeing and methylation. Just ask us! Keep eating foods rich in NATURAL folate such as fruits and veggies, especially our leafy greens. And if you are concerned, book an appointment by phoning us on 0257135585 #folatedeficiency #mthfr #folicacidisnotfolate #pregnancysupport #recurrentmiscarriage #mentalhealthsupport #chronicfatigueawareness #ruralnaturopath #tamworthnsw

12.01.2022 One of our favourite prebiotics and probiotic powders in clinic. Medically researched strain of probiotic and prebiotic combination. We use this one for those with IBS, for constipation and sometimes as part of personalised gut microbiome healing programs. It’s tasteless and dissolves well meaning it can be mixed in with smoothies and into food. A great one for kids too. Talk to us about making a booking to support your gut health- 0257135585

07.01.2022 You can do a lot to help yourself with your hormones with what is in your fridge and pantry already. What we eat has a direct impact on our we feel. Foods can be inflammatory or they can reduce inflammation. Foods can promote healthy hormone clearance from the body. We know that both inflammation and excess oestrogen are both implicated in many women’s hormone issues. So foods to include to help hormones may be:... - eating from the cruciferous family daily. These include broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and kale. These are very good for helping the body deal with excess oestrogen and also aiding liver detoxification. - including omega 3 foods such as fish, salmon, tuna, walnuts, hemp seeds, chia seeds as omega 3 is vital for reducing inflammation in the body - increasing zinc rich foods as zinc is important for healthy hormones and skin. These include seeds, nuts, whole grains and meat. Zinc is especially important for a healthy prostate gland in men too. - reducing trans fats found in margarine and fried foods as these are highly inflammatory on the body - increasing flaxseed meal can help the body clear excess oestrogen also. It’s a great fibre source also. - having balanced blood sugars through eating regularly and avoiding as much as possible processed food. We know that unstable blood sugar and insulin resistance can contribute to PCOS. - increase iodine rich foods such as seafood, seaweed, iodised salt. Iodine is vital for healthy breast tissue and ovaries, as well as our thyroid. These tips are of a general nature. Each individual case may vary, so if you need help with your hormones or with your diet give us a call on 0257235585 to make an appointment. #tamworthnsw #tamworthbusiness #ruralnaturopath #nutritionalmedicine #foodaffectsmood #foodasmedicine #carternutrition #hormonehealth #womenshormones

05.01.2022 Envirocare make sensitive skin products to suit those who have eczema and skin rashes. These are petrochemical free and are gentle enough to use on babies. We now stock the body wash products in this range. Personally, being an eczema sufferer I have found these products excellent when I have had a flare, hence why we wanted to bring them into clinic. Alongside diet and food intolerance support, gut and histamine support, eczema can be supported by avoiding harsh soaps on the skin. These are very cost effective products for a natural skin care range, priced from $7. We are open Tuesday-Friday from 10am (from December open Mondays). Look forward to seeing you soon
04.01.2022 Please be advised of our Christmas trading hours.
03.01.2022 We are so blessed to have Casey available more days from the 16th.
02.01.2022 Love the power of healing the gut, herbal medicine and when we get results and they stay consistent. Patient presented with aches and pains, anxiety, and general feeling of being unwell. We tested her thyroid, which showed it was overactive and did a stool microbiome test which showed a virus living in the gut. I treated the virus, did some gut work, used some herbal medicine for the thyroid and the results speak for themselves. Patient is doing well and her thyroid is much... happier, no more aches and pains. Naturopathy & Nutritional medicine is about getting to the cause of a health issue. Call us on 0257135585 (please note Jayne has now closed her books to new patients for this year)

01.01.2022 From my family to yours, I wish you a Merry Christmas. I want to personally thank you for your support this year- I truely do have wonderful loyal patients. ... I know this year has been a really difficult one for us all. Thanks for letting us be your listening ear and thanks for sticking by us. This year has been very challenging as a business owner. Personally, it’s been a year full of technical challenges, and has been extra intense in terms of stock availability and demands on appointments. However it’s been a privilege to see people’s lives improve through the use of natural medicine- seeing people cope with stress and anxiety better, improve energy, being part of someone’s recovery from a nervous breakdown, relieving people’s pain, reducing IBS symptoms, supporting immunity, finding the answer as to why someone has chronic iron and B12 absorption issues. I just love working with people and helping them realise they don’t have to accept putting up with chronic health issues. It’s been a year of business growth also, as we welcomed new naturopath Julie to the team earlier this month and watch nutritionist Casey go from strength to strength. Thanks to my admin for your hard work this year. It’s been a testing year for supply of products, tech issues and demands on resources. We got through it! I couldn’t do it without you. Huge thanks to my husband Matt who sets up all my IT, including spending hours navigating the set up of email accounts, new ways to capture and store live blood images, and for showing me how to use zoom , putting up with my stressing over the changes COVID-19 bought into the business. Plus listening to us whinge about the printer. So now it’s time for rest and family time, ready for a new year. Let’s hope it’s a better one then 2020! Blessings Jayne We reopen Thursday January 7th Image by Finishing Image Photography by Rachel Deane
