07.01.2022 COUNTING ON FINGERS Using fingers. I suggest to teach a child to use his fingers for math. To use fingers is very useful in the long run. Derek has his fingers with him all the time, he can look at them whenever he needs to. All my students use fingers for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division very successfully from the 1st grade to the 12th grade,, even A students use their fingers very fast. Place student's left open hand palm down on the table. With his right ...finger he touches each of his left fingers (starting with his little finger) and counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. He has to start counting from the little finger (left to right) progressing to the thumb. When he will be comfortable with that, make him continue, counting on 6 , 7, 8, 9, 10 touching his fingers on the right hand with his left finger starting this time from his thumb, moving towards his little finger. Do this as often as you can, until the kid feels OK with it.
