25.01.2022 https://youtu.be/2vEaur5irDY Hi all - Here is my promised interview with Karri Field (physiotherapist). Sorry it couldn't end up being "live" on fB. Technology was not on our side yesterday. However, if you would like to leave questions in the comments section, I may be able to twist Karri's arm to do a Part 2 session - a QnA to answer all your questions. Either that, or she and/or I, will answer your questions on fB. It's easier to expand in an interview though. This session... is for anyone with headache, neck, jaw issues, teachers, singers, instrumentalists, etc., We discuss yellow flags (warning signs) regarding vocal/mechanical/muscular overloading, orofacial pain (causes and effects), impact of breathing, alignment, lifestyle...We discuss briefly "globus sensation/pharyngeus"... Hope it's useful. Thank you to Karri Field for her generous time yesterday. I would also like to put out a SPECIAL thank you to Stuart Fisher who was an amazing technical support throughout! You are the best. See more

23.01.2022 Hi all - I'm skipping this week's "fB live" but am thrilled to announce that next week, Tuesday 5 May @ 12.30pm, I will be chatting with a highly respected physiotherapist, Karri Field, from the Headache, Neck and Jaw Clinic in Brisbane. Karri is also a specialist in TMJ conditions (jaw) as well as in Vocal Unloading. I met her while I was doing my Masters of Music Studies. This session is for everyone from singers, to teachers, to instrumentalists...and anyone who has 'issu...es'. At some point in our lives, most of us have worried about the health of our own voices, or our student's voices. Some of the things we'll be chatting about are: * Warning signs? Yellow and red flags? * What things we can be listening out for as singers? * Impact of breathing * Oral posture/articulation/TMJ * Alignment * Vocal overloading * Mechanical/physiological structures (what to look out for if structures have been impacted by trauma or is it just technique? * and more....everything is interconnected.... Hopefully, you have some questions lined up for Karri. This is a rare opportunity. See you next Tuesday 5th May on fB live at 12.30pm.

20.01.2022 This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Jazz Singers' Jam night - a monthly event I started producing and hosting for 2 decades now. The JSJN is something I believe to be a very valuable Community of Practice, which has been presented at the Brisbane Jazz Club in Kangaroo Point, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia now for over a decade. It's a model of which I'm very proud servicing an artistic community in Brisbane, while providing a sustainable model for the Club/Venue. A...s we know, many venues have come and gone over the last 20 years, but the Brisbane Jazz Club has survived almost 50 years. There is a reason for this - its heart and soul are its people - the volunteers - many of whom have incredibly valuable skills. 20 years ago, I saw a great need to create a transitional pathway or a link between the world of academia, the industry and the community where singers could negotiate the meaning of their practice on stage, backed by professional instrumentalists and in front of a live audience. So many people out there are incredibly talented - or at the very least - have something to say through music and their voice. It really is possible to have a fulfilling artistic life outside of one's "day job" for some. In other cases, school students who aren't sure which path to take, can get a real taste of what it's like to hold one's own in front of a "live" audience, with an incredible band that one's never met before. Others have had to take leave from their dreams to make sure their lives are in balance, having families, etc., The JSJN has also become a vehicle to network, test out new material, learn peripherally, collaborate on recording projects, define their goals. The other thing is, it's a perfect hub to call on for visiting artists touring through the area. Workshops and masterclasses with these artists are a feasible add-on to any tour and can only enrich the lives of the local community of artists. So if one day, we are all free to travel again without restrictions, and you are passing through Brisbane, Australia - always look us up on the first Thursday of every month at the Brisbane Jazz Club from 7pm to 10pm. Come and say hello. 15.01.2022 BEYOND LYRICS "Scat is not just an idle feature of jazz. Instead, it represents in vocal form an important ideology of freedom of expression that has underpinned the whole enterprise of jazz music making since its inception. Scat allows the jazz vocalist to escape the lyrics and the straitjacket of meanings that comes from words. It grants the singer the status of a solo instrumentalist, like any other in jazz, and thereby moves vocal expression towards abstraction and modes ...of meaning that are musical rather than verbal..." George Burrows "The Conversation" https://youtu.be/9CbVy1NnB4g Book in now to hear the wonderful Justin Stephenson let it rip at the Brisbane Vocal Jazz Festival 2020 on Friday 7th August 7.30pm to 10pm at BJC. 10.01.2022 A very international affair 5 years ago today.

09.01.2022 Just a reminder that tomorrow at 12.30pm (Tuesday 5 May), I'll be chatting with the amazing physiotherapist specialist, Karri Field, from the Headache, Neck and Jaw Clinic. Just had a test run and believe me, if you are teacher, singer, instrumentalist, or anyone who is fascinated with the link between technique, normal functional skills/habits, your own personal history of injury and how it could possibly contribute to what you are experiencing in your field of expertise, this is one to catch. After 5 minutes of a technical test run today, I've learned so much already - bonus!!!

04.01.2022 Exactly one year ago in Sydney with David Humphreys Sydney Jazz Collective - Foundry 616 - just before shut down.

04.01.2022 Every jam night has something different to offer and this third jam conducted under Covid restrictions offered plenty of variety from the 12 vocalists that performed with the Dave Spicer Trio. David himself opened and closed the night and we have a few pics of each of the singers for the record.

03.01.2022 The new year opened with a new piano player, Marnix Van Bruggen, playing with OJ and Huddo. We had 10 vocalists including five new faces and plenty of variety. Ingrid presided over proceedings and finished with four singers getting up for an improve jam. The whole night was a feast of talent and fun!
