23.01.2022 Javeenbah Theatre will return to the stage with the upcoming production of Eyes to the Floor. Alana Valentine (2008) has written a haunting and striking treatise on the painful legacy of institutionalised violence and oppression, composed from stories from survivors of Australian institutes for girls. Promoted as places that housed uncontrollable and morally corrupt young girls, in reality they did little more than run away or question authority. In researching the Hays Girls... Home, Valentine writes, a picture began to emerge of an injustice so grotesque that I could only sit open-mouthed and weeping that such treatment had been metered out to Australian children until as recently as 1974. In a nuanced and thoughtful tribute to the young women and communities affected by this injustice, we hope to face the truth of the past to strive towards a better future. Tickets now selling for Eyes to the Floor, written by Alana Valentine and directed by Jocelyn Moore-Carter. 22.01.2022 While everyone does their part and stays at home, the Javeenbah family would like to help alleviate isolation boredom by reminiscing over some of our incredible past performances. Hopefully these walks down memory lane will tide us over until we can get back into theatres and make more sensational memories. First up we have our President's, Trevor Love, memories of Deadline from 1999: At a time when Javeenbah would almost do one murder/mystery play each year in its season, Deadline was my first foray in direction in this genre. A great cast of Javeenbah regulars at the time, a talented newbie in Cathy Vanagio and a Mystery cast member of June Lamor as Mrs Badger (a red herring in the plot). Great memories of a great play and great people.

22.01.2022 All that glitters isn't gold, especially when you're corrupt and can't tell the government inspector from the, well... not the government inspector! The Government Inspector opens next Friday December 4th! A Russian town's corrupt officials descend into panic when they hear a government inspector is in their midst. Unsure just who the bureaucratic gent is, they scramble to impress, placate and bribe... but do they have their man?... Mistaken identities, desperate acts and hijinks abound! The officials are corrupt but the language even more so. This may not be a show for our younger patrons. Join us during our revised season December 4th - 12th. 21.01.2022 An update on our Assassins season: Covid-19 has left a deep wound in our countrys arts industry, with all manner of live events being cancelled or postponed indefinitely. 19.01.2022 Our next trip down memory lane is the 2011 production of A Street Car Named Desire, directed by Helen Maden. Pictured are Pamela Cassidy as Blanche Dubois, Wendy John as Stella Kowalski, and Jimmy Odenbreit as Stanley Kowalski. The Street Car set, designed by Helen Maden and constructed by Norm Strambini, won the BEST SET award at the Golden Palm Theatre Awards 2011. The beautiful stair railing was custom made by the late Austin Reid, who also constructed the physical street... car. The cast made several entrances on the street car, as Austin pushed it down the Javeenbah courtyard for momentum and in through the double doors near the stage. It was magic! Austin Reid was an incredibly talented set builder. If you dreamt it, he could build it. 18.01.2022 An update from Javeenbah Theatre: In light of today's government announcements, we wish to inform our jBah community of the following: 1. The final scheduled performance of 'Assassins' has been cancelled. We had a plan in place that conformed to previous stipulations but today's changes have made it impossible for us to proceed in all good conscience. We continue to be proud of our magnificent cast and crew. ... 2. Next weekend's audition for 'The Government Inspector' has been cancelled, to be re-scheduled when we have more clarity on how our season will proceed. 3. Our next production, 'Eyes to the Floor', is on hold. We still anticipate it will be the next show on our stage. With so much uncertainty, we aren't in a position to speculate as to when this may be. We share empathy with our fellow Gold Coast theatres, who've also had to go dark for the time being. We've turned on our ghost light, however, that will lead us back when the time comes. See you on the other side, theatre lovers. Take care.

14.01.2022 This week brings some memories from director and actor Shane Caddaye. He has kindly sorted through his collection and provided Javeenbah with photos of about 20 shows for our archives. Here are a few gems from WAIT UNTIL DARK in 2003, the second show in the new theatre. When the new theatre was built, it was decided that the stage would never be painted again to avoid the age-old problem of many layers of paint building up over the years. Well, that lasted until Wait Until D...ark (the second show) when Shane designed a monochromatic set that had a black & white checkerboard floor, and the only affordable way to do it was to paint the stage! This production was also blessed with Colin Crows lighting design, featuring a street light casting shadows through venetian blinds and a rigged light in the refrigerator that spilled across stage whenever the door was opened. The photos decorating the walls on set were blow ups of the directors own photography. Written by Frederick Knott Directed by Shane Caddaye Actors: Croker Dean Creighton; Gloria Carmen Trevino; Mike Gary Mitchell; Susy Priscilla Scott; Roat Chris Roche; Sam Matt Morgan

05.01.2022 Our next trip down memory lane comes from the 2010 production of Ruby Moon, the Australian Gothic play directed by Jocelyn Moore-Carter. It is the story of a couple, Ray and Sylvie Moon (played by Noel Thompson and Pamela Sexton) who have lost their daughter Ruby. The play was written in response to the missing child motif inspired by Daniel Morecombe and with echoes of fables like Red Riding Hood and the Pied Piper. Through the play, the parents, driven by grief and the ne...ed to find answers, visit the neighbours every night to seek more information. The neighbours are all potential suspects, as are the parents themselves. Throughout the play eerie sounds of Rubys last phone call on the answerphone and her naïve piano refrain are counterposed with the sound of the Wizard knocking on their door and leaving packages containing dismembered doll body parts, and the final strains of a Mr Whippy truck melody create a ghostly atmosphere. The play is a modern Australian classic, written by Matthew Cameron, that leaves audiences questioning the sanity of the parents and the overwhelming power of grief. The play is studied widely as not only a wonderful piece of writing and acting, but an example of Magic Realism, Australian Gothic and Absurd drama. See more
