19.01.2022 Apologies to anyone this week that I didn't get back to. I set my phone to 'do not disturb' which I thought meant 'be quiet' not 'hide all messages and calls' I believe I've caught up and gotten back to everyone, but if I've missed you please drop me a message and I'll get back to you. Really sorry for the inconvenience.
19.01.2022 Did you know that computers stimulate your senses to keep you awake at night? You can use a screen tinter or blue light blocking glasses... But you're still at your device. Probably tired too! So what's keeping you glued to your devices at night?
17.01.2022 I'm consistently disappointed in myGov's approach to two-factor authentication, namely by its lack of backup codes. If you lose your phone and need to access government services there's no recovery options. Contrast this to Google which for example allows you to enter a backup code that you've written down. With myGov you have to make a new account. Unacceptable.
14.01.2022 I now take card payments through Square!
11.01.2022 It looks like I've been quiet enough here for Facebook to suggest I mark my opening hours as 'permanently closed'! A little silly, but I will try posting some more for you all.
09.01.2022 Announcement: All in-person services are unavailable until this pandemic is under control in Australia. Stay safe and make sure to clean your phone screen or computer keyboard before lending your devices to friends and family.
07.01.2022 Did you know that I run my website from home? It's a simple website, sure- but instead of being located on a server in Sydney somewhere it physically sits on a Linux machine that exists in my home and connects to the Internet through my home's Internet connection. When you go to my website you actually send data to my house and back!
04.01.2022 Quick note about invoices and receipts: I'm now writing and sending these directly as text via email. It looks less elegant, but this means you no longer need to handle PDF documents. This allows easier reading, copying, pasting, searching, and archiving. If you don't like this, don't worry: I'm still happy to send you or print PDFs at your request.
04.01.2022 Just a reminder everyone: Facebook sometimes has sponsored content which will send you to a scary page warning you about a virus and prompting you to call a phone number. Never accept unsolicited tech support over the phone, they will do their best to scam you or gather information about you and sell it for telemarketers. Instead, press the Ctrl and W keys at the same time. If it asks you if you want to leave, click 'Leave' or 'Yes'. If that doesn't work, press Ctrl, Alt and ...Del keys at the same time, click 'Task Manager', click your web browser in the list then click 'End Task' and close the window. You can then re-open your browser it will be gone. If that still doesn't work, press the power button on your computer and let it shut down. If that doesn't work, hold it in until it turns off or shuts down. Then start it again.
03.01.2022 As of today, all previous tips of mine, and all future tips will not only be available on Facebook but on my website too! The tips on the website will be curated and updated, so if you ever need to look up or re-read old tips make sure to check them out here.
03.01.2022 Hey everyone! I've been having computer troubles this week, so here's my question to you: When was the last time you yelled at a computer and why?
02.01.2022 Tech tip: Use private browsing mode to avoid being tracked. If you're trying to buy things online you'll often see that just viewing an item will cause it to show up in ads later. You might also find that Facebook sends you different ads. With private browsing mode your browser creates a temporary online fingerprint unrelated to your existing browsing history. This makes it harder for Facebook or other websites to send ads to you as they don't recognize you.
02.01.2022 Small notice: My website was broken for a while and I only noticed today. Fixed.
02.01.2022 Tech tip: Use a disk usage viewer to see where all your space is going. Oftentimes I've seen people with phones or computers that have so little space left that they cease to function. Worse, these devices don't tell you where space actually goes. They give vague estimates that ignore things like caches and temporary files. Two disk usage viewers I can recommend are DiskUsage for Android and WinDirStat for Windows:... Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details Windows: https://windirstat.net/
