We firmly believe it is very important that our stallions socialise with other horses , this process starts at weaning and continues constantly throughout their lives even after they have started covering mares. Creating well behaved , kind mannered and socially acceptable Studs is our priority here at JCJ .

16.01.2022 Educating young horses - Common mistakes with serious consequences, as described by a few successful Olympians - food for thought? What do you think? Horses ...that don’t feel good about themselves and their work are less willing (and less able) to perform, and often lack expression too. Often this is the result of mistakes made in their education. Impatience Starting too early is one of the most common mistakes when it comes to the education of young horses. Further, many people begin to work on collection very soon after the horse is broken in, rather than spending time teaching it to go forward and stretch. This may be to prepare the horse for an auction, or to satisfy an owner who wants to see results as soon as possible. But horses need time to find their balance. This is why many performance horse trainers prefer to start working horses at four years of age, rather than three. They then begin their competition careers around the age of five. In the first two to three years of riding, the horse needs a lot of time the body needs to be systematically built up. Rushing Rushing a young horse’s education almost always has negative consequences. One step forward can quickly turn into two steps backward, for example when the horse is consistently ridden to the edge of utter exhaustion. What a horse cannot physically master tends to have mental consequences too. Constantly asking too much of the horse will quickly destroy the horse’s motivation to learn and work. Everyone makes mistakes, we’re only human but a good rider is always willing to question themselves, and will seek and accept constructive criticism. Lack of understanding Not having a good understanding of the functional anatomy of the horse is another big mistake. You need to know about the horse’s body to avoid and recognize mistakes in education. It requires a lot of self-discipline to not over-strain a talented horse, and a lot of knowledge and experience to recognize what’s too much for the horse. Those working with young horses need a good understanding of the relationship between the horse’s body and its performance potential. You can’t turn a Prius into a Porsche, and you need to recognize where your horse’s physical limitations lie if a horse’s build makes a certain task or a certain performance level an impossibility, that won’t change with any amount of training. Long-term overstraining of the horse becomes most obvious in the horse’s eyes. It is important that those educating a young horse develop a good judgement of the horse’s abilities. Every rider should start by thinking about what they can ask of their horse, based solely on the horse’s physical qualities. Lack of discipline The rider needs to have a lot of self-discipline. A lack of self-discipline (and/or a lack of patience) often leads to unfair punishment, which in turn scares the horse. Scaring a young horse is one of the gravest mistakes you can make in its education. Here it is important to distinguish between horses that are naturally timid, but whose trust the rider can earn; and those that a rider has made scared, and in whom that fear of the rider may never go away. Of course every horse has a different level of natural willingness, but it is important to distinguish between the horse not wanting to, and not being able to, perform a task. Generally, the horse is willing. But the horse is often misunderstood by the rider. You can achieve a lot with praise, but sadly praise for young horses can be far and few. Horses are too often unfairly punished, for example when the rider is frustrated and takes their feeling of frustration and or helplessness out on the horse. Inexperience An inexperienced horse should be paired with an experienced rider. That doesn’t necessarily have to be a pro, though. Often those who have the most experience with educating young horses are either too old to want to get on a young horse, or they don’t have the time that a young horse needs. When someone is pressed for time, this typically cuts short warm up and cool down time, which are particularly important for young horses. It makes intuitive sense that an inexperienced horse needs more time to relax, warm up, and ‘get into a rhythm’ than an experienced one. The cool down phase is just as important for the young horse to take in what it has learned, relax again, and return to its stable or paddock calm and content. Someone who rides well, can stay in the saddle, is knowledgeable, thoughtful, and always willing to learn and work with an experienced trainer can be a good match for a young horse. Another good thing to keep in mind is what you don’t want in a year, don’t let happen now Negligence Don’t underestimate the small mistakes and those little things you let go because you think ‘one time won’t hurt’. Many of these little sins can bring about serious health issues in the future. Especially in the early stages, appropriate hoof-care and dental care are often neglected. But wolfs-teeth, for example, can already be quite prominent in young horses, and make the bridle uncomfortable for them. Further, because the horse is still growing, and its shape is frequently changing, many are reluctant to invest much money into a properly fitting saddle, which can create long-term back issues for the horse. Mounting without an aid (e.g. mounting block) should also be avoided. The saddle could slip, which unnecessarily strains the back, and/or the girth has been done up too tight. This creates discomfort for the horse, and can also lead to back problems, as well as psychological damage (think, a horse that won’t stand still when you try to mount, girthy horses). Whenever possible, the considerate rider will lead the horse around for a few minutes, tightening the girth gradually, and use a mounting block to avoid the one-sided, unnecessary strain on the horse’s back. Thoughtlessness Even professional riders sometimes end up at a dead end. One common mistake is to continuously work and nit-pick on tasks that the horse finds difficult. If you keep focusing on your horse’s weaknesses, neither you nor your horse have the chance to enjoy the horse’s strengths. Letting yourself and your horse enjoy the horse’s strengths builds confidence and pride for you both it may even give the horse a little bit more expression, and at your next competition that may help the judges overlook the weaknesses. Of course every horse should fulfill the basic requirements of the training scale for young horses. However, there are many ways to success. The key is to remember that every horse, like every person, is different. What works for one horse, may not work for another. Similarly, what comes naturally or easily to one horse, may be a difficult task or another. It is therefore important that a horse’s education is individually tailored to that horse’s needs. After all, the horse shouldn’t just do its job, it should enjoy it as should you. www.sonovetequinetherapy.com.au

14.01.2022 Dear Horse industry, Stop being awful. Stop putting others down for the sake of one's own prosperity. ... Stop the whispers in the warm up ring. Stop the snarky remarks behind closed doors. Stop with the clicks and underhanded complements. Stop with the need for newest and latest fashions or tack sets but never riding your horse in fear they may get dirty. Stop manipulating others words or actions. Stop normalizing poor sportsmanship and start normalizing folks who work hard. Chances are if you've had horses long enough you've encountered some sort of this. From the competition world, to trail riders, to rescues, to top level riders, it's everywhere and it's terrible and it's got to stop. It's got to. I've met riders, young and old, who are petrified to ride infront of people because some where along the line, someone told them they weren't good enough. I've seen talented people quit because of gossip and I've seen people give up on what they believe in because folks made them belive they were only 1' tall. When you see a rider kicking them selves after a bad ride, tell them great job for hanging in there and give them some tips. When you see that girl show up in the rusty old bumperpull, know she likely put everything she had into her entry fees. When you see an organization fighting for what they believe in, fight with them. When you see the girl too shy to ride, ask her to help you out by hopping on to keep your horse company because it would be an awfully big help. When you see the girl scared to death in line up remind them why they are there and they have this. When you see the girl discouraged over progress, remind them how far they have come. The world is full of ugliness, horses should be our escape, not a place we feel belittled. We are all incredibly blessed to have Equines in our life. Becoming better Horseman is hard enough without having folks tear you down. Please start normalizing raising each other up. -Erin O'Neill

13.01.2022 Here is a radiograph of an almost two year old horse. It is that time of year when people get excited about getting their two year olds to a trainer to get star...ted under saddle. Here is a perfect example of why not to be in such a hurry. This horse will be two in May and when we sent these radiographs of his knees/carpus to a specialist at a university. We were told this horse should not be started in a training program for another 10-12 months because his growth plates in his knees were not closed enough. Starting a horse that is not physically mature enough can have long term effects like osteoarthritis and chronic lameness issues. If you have any doubt, you can always have radiographs done to see if the growth plates are closed enough for the work required by a training program. See more

12.01.2022 Daisy JCJ Its A Dun getting her winter woolies on and developing quite a baby belly . Im sure she is cooking another spectacular foal that her owner will be very happy with . As you can see even though we have had rain , the drought has not officially been broken and its going to take years for our paddocks to recover , most of the green is weeds and some toxic to horses . The long process of removing these invasive weeds and replanting paddocks has begun , hopefully we will continue to get regular rain to help the grass grow as quickly as Daisys foal is . Have a Great Day .

04.01.2022 4 year old mare. 7/8th Appaloosa, 1/8 Warmblood. Lace blanket, is slowly colouring out. Approx 15hh at present (not measured). Well handled, friendly, too qu...iet for her own good, heavy machinery etc doesn’t bother her (she likes to help), good to c/s/f and easy to handle (alone by lady owner with chronic injuries) for shots/medications. Unshown due to no fault of her own (no time), and ready to start. Good doer. AAA rego pending able to be registered with Sportaloosa and Dilutes (Ancillary). One copy of GBED, otherwise clear. Exceptionally people orientated girl, a real busy body, always wants to be included in what everyone is doing. Genuinely hard sale of a mare who is larger than life and will be sorely missed, so please, serious enquiries only. This is not a fire sale, and the right home is of utmost importance. If not sold by Christmas, Dig is off to be professionally started under saddle and campaigned in 2021 and her price will increase accordingly. $5, 000. **** all photos and videos in this album are taken off my phone as is, in the paddock with no rugging etc unless otherwise stated ****
