21.01.2022 What is the most limiting factor in a squat that ends high (like the one one the left) or a full depth squat (like the one on the right)? It’s often a problem i...n ankle mobility. You see mobile ankles allow the knee to move forward as much as possible allowing the hips to the descend to the greatest depth possible. . Athletes with poor ankle mobility will also commonly show the rounded back compensation as they try to squat deeper. . Try this test to screen your ankle mobility. With your foot 5 inches from a wall, see if you can touch the wall with your knee without your heel popping off the floor. If you couldn’t touch you just uncovered a weak link (either in flexibility or joint mobility) that we can clear up with stretching and joint mobilizations to improve your squat depth. . For the stretch, find a bench and drive your knee over your toes until you feel a good stretch. Make sure your stretching in a good position and have your knee pointed towards the outside part of your toes. Try 10 reps for a 10-15 second hold. . To take away a pinch sensation in the front of your ankle with banded joint mobilizations, keep the band on the top of your foot and drive your knee over your toe. Try a set of 20 reps for a 3-5 second hold. . Always re-check your squat depth after to see if the exercises were efficent for your body at improving depth. .
