20.01.2022 Hi Pharmily! We hope everyone is staying safe, happy and healthy. JCUPSA has teamed up with NAPSA to participate in some of IPSF’s Health Campaigns! This year our first campaign is World No Tobacco Day. May 31st is World No Tobacco Day, a World Health Organisation campaign aimed at debunking myths and providing young people with the knowledge required to make an educated choice about tobacco smoking. This is especially important right now as studies show that smokers have a ...higher risk for a severe case of COVID19. Here’s some facts about tobacco smoking - Tobacco kills up to half of its users and kills more than 8million people each year - More than 7million of those deaths as a direct result of tobacco use. 1.2 million are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke - Around 80% of the worlds 1.1 billion smokers live in low-and middle-income counties. - In Australia, smoking cost the economy, in social, healthcare and economic expenditure $31.2 billion. Community pharmacists play a vital role in the education and support of patients seeking to quit smoking. Nicotine replacement therapy is available over the counter from community pharmacies, and other prescription only medication is dispensing by pharmacists. We encourage all those involved in community pharmacy to start dialogues with their patients and encourage them to quit smoking. QLD Health has a fantastic initiative called Quit HQ which can be found at https://quithq.initiatives.qld.gov.au. For more information you can also visit the WHO official initiative website here: https://www.who.int/tobacco/wntd/en/
19.01.2022 R U OK? #RUOKDay A simple question and one we probably ask and have been asked by our family and friends before. But with R U OK day being today, JCUPSA wants to encourage the James Cook University Pharmacy community to really see how our family and friends are going, particularly during the stressful time that our world is enduring today with COVID-19. This, R U OK day, lets educate ourselves on some helpful ways we can help those around us, beyond asking this simple questio...n. As social support is an identifiable component of solid relationships and psychological health, let's create a network of family and friends around each other in which we can lean on in times of need. And let's not be afraid to speak up when we do need that help too. Below is a link to a conversation role play on how to handle a situation where someone you know is struggling. I encourage you to engage in this material as there is more to say after R U OK. #theresmoretosay https://ruok.vudoo.io/watch/16561128133 This week is also National Prevention Week and today is world suicide prevention day #WSPD2020. So I would like to extend this information with some resources if you or someone you know is struggling: - Lifeline Australia: 13 11 14 - Beyond Blue Australia 1300 22 4636 - MensLine Australia: 1300 78 99 78 - Suicide Call Back Service: 1300 659 467 As upcoming healthcare professionals, let's start a conversation that could change a life today, tomorrow and any day it's needed.
