19.01.2022 Camphor Laurel Natural Edge Bowl with Turquoise Resin. This bowl I made at Cooroora Woodworkers Club - showing a couple of new turners the processes involved to make a 'live edge or 'natural edge' bowl. The hole in the bowl was a bonus, allowing me the opportunity for a little more resin practice. I certainly need the practice, going on the number of mistakes in the pour. The end result though is satisfactory.... 260mm / 10inches across; 65mm/ 2.5 inches high.

19.01.2022 Olive Bowl One of my old favourites - nice to get it out and re-polish it an anticipation of the Exhibition opening later in the week. The wood for this bowl was given to me by Peter Huey, an ex-cattleman from W Qld. Peter told me the olive tree it came from had come from Sydney, the tree calculated to have been planted in about 1860.... I made a traditionally shaped bowl from half the piece of wood I was given. This was the other side of the chunk - odd shape with a chainsaw cut across it. For ages I put it aside because I couldn't see where to go with it. Eventually though, I made a start, slowly developing some curves and a bowl recess. Odd, weird, maybe. But original, distinctive, unique - qualities I love. A beautiful piece of wood. An enduring treasure. Peter Huey was also a metal sculptor and one of his 'farmyard' sculptures is shown on the last pic. The sculpture is a permanent installation at the entrance to Pomona Railway Station Gallery.

17.01.2022 Wood turning tuition day at Cooroora Woodworkers Club. Most Thursdays we have a couple off members in to practice and play at wood turning. But today all 5 lathes were running hot. Our workshop is an old concrete structure which, in its former life, was a large kiln attached to a sawmill, used for drying timber.

16.01.2022 Mango Natural Edge Bowl As I headed off for my duty day at the woodwork club, I noticed one of my neighbours had left a stack of sizeable mango branches on the roadside. Must have been left there for wood workers, I assumed . . . So I snaffled a crotch branch, and rough turned a bowl. It was freshly cut so I've turned it nice and thin so expect that will move and warp as it dries - with some microwave assistance - over the next week or so. It needs sanding too, so I'll also g...et onto that as it dries. Hopefully it will work out ok and my new neighbours will get a piece of their mango tree back as a gift. 230mm across, 150mm high

10.01.2022 Silky Oak Square Bowl While out at the milling site of our woodwork club a couple of months back, I found a couple of flitches destined for the burn pile, but that seemed to have enough good wood to make a bowl. Borers had started feasting on it, leaving an interesting pattern once they'd departed.... Turned green, and thin - I'd hoped for a bit more warping but it still worked out ok. The bowl has a rounded base so it wobbles a little when touched, but it does settle quickly. 230mm x 210mm. Finished in food safe Kunos Oil.

09.01.2022 Red Cedar Bowl I made this bowl a few years ago and have put it out on display a couple of times. But I think it is probably the best and certainly the the most dramatic bowl I've ever made. Made from an odd shaped chunk of red cedar which was abandoned because of its weathered appearance and numerous cracks and bark inclusions. The deep rich colour however did look very promising. I had trouble finding a solid edge so I could mount it on the lathe but a bit of epoxy fixed th...at. There were a few challenges turning such a holey piece of wood, and considerable trepidation as the gaps appeared. But I persevered and was thrilled with the bowl that emerged. 220mm across at the top and it stands 180mm high.

08.01.2022 Large Silky Oak Bowl, woo One of my all too many long term projects. But heading completion. In return for a large silky oak tree, I offered to make a couple of large bowls as keepsakes. Roughed them out straight away and put them away for what was meant to be a little while. The property owners moved away - more delays. But recent reconnect prompted me to get going again.... Almost there . . . Just over 400mm across,

07.01.2022 Mango Bowl A twisted bit of raw wood - a trimming discarded when stabbing a large old mango tree. Spotted by the Club Secretary Steve and brought in for me on wood turning tuition day. I wasn't quite sure what to make of the it; the wood was very green so just started peeling away.... Turned a little bit thinish, and it developed some nice ripples as it dried, with microwave assistance. Mango wood is a lovely creamy colour when freshly cut; turning brown with dark flecks as it dries. I'm lead to believe this mango will stay this creamy tone, now that it's dried and sealed. Lovely contrasting highlights - branch sections decayed giving the black tones; and bark sections drying to a leather-like appearance. The odd oval shape, and the internal bowl evolved organically as the turning progressed - no preconceived plan, just a good healthy dose of ad hoc. 260mm at it's widest point, and the internal bowl is 150mm across at the rim. About 50mm high.

Free entry, so well worth the price of admission.

04.01.2022 Mango Natural Edge Bowl A welcome to the neighbourhood gift for D & A, new to the area but immersing themselves in their new property and village life. They'd cut down a mango tree and stacked the larger branched by the roadside. I knocked off a nice crotch section, and decided to make a bowl to return to them.... Green mango wood turns very nicely so I was able to turn it nice and thin - let it dry for a week then sanded and oiled it with Kunos Oil. D & A were thrilled to have an old discarded chunk of mango wood come back to them as a finished bowl, from their new property. 230mm across and 150mm high.

03.01.2022 Small Bowls A couple of smallish bowls - made at woodies while helping a couple of newbies with their turning. Nice bits of wood.... Silky Oak Bowl 170mm Camphor Laurel Bowl 140mm
