25.01.2022 We're in the thick of honey season and we're flat out harvesting while the flow is at its peak. Is putting your students to work OK? @barossasaint didn't seem to mind the valuable hands-on experience. Thanks Jane, nice work. Sorry about the stings. #jembellafarm #beekeepinglife #langstrothhive #beeseason

25.01.2022 Morning milking Chooks fed Sheep moved to a new paddock Anzac Biscuit baking Sunday - another day on the farm.

25.01.2022 It's a harsh reality to admit, but yes!... I am a jar hoarder. I'm sure there are a few jam makers and preservers out there who would proudly admit to their attachment of a "handy" jar or two (hundred) It's stone fruit season and here in the Jembella kitchen I've been rolling out a batch of jam or relish every day since Christmas. It's time to sort out my cellar space to store said produce however, the shelves are overrun with more jars than I'll need, so I've had to do... a serious sort. Instead of chucking into the recycle bin I've left a few boxes out at the Farmgate stall to share with other Jam makers in the district. There are beautiful jars of all sizes; large storage jars, Moccona jars, passata and sauce bottles too. Most of them donated by thoughtful Farmgate customers. Help yourself to a few or take them all before they go into the recycle bin. **No more jar donations please until further notice. See more

25.01.2022 As fast as I turn the fruit and zucchinis into relish and jams, more produce is ready for picking. The Farmgate stall is groaning with produce from the vege gardens and freshly made jams and relish. Zucchini 80c each and bunches of freshly picked rhubarb $2 each. Open all day every day. Thanks for paying into the honesty tin.

24.01.2022 Happy Spring Thursday friends. The Farmgate stall is stocked this morning with produce, honey, jams, chutney, beeswax, Biscuits & free range eggs, decorative bird box, Rhubarb $3, parsley $2, and kale $3, all grown organically, no sprays or chemicals. And take a free book or a stack of them while you're here.

23.01.2022 Honeysuckle's adored calf Angel, is now six weeks old and I began her training two weeks ago. She can do lots of tricks, clever girl, and now stands quietly while I rub her all over and lift up her feet. She puts her head in the mini milking bales (purposely built for calf training). And whilst our leading practice is somewhat unpredictable as yet, we're making great progress. These small steps done early in her life contribute to the long term low stress stock management practices that she will hopefully experience throughout her life as a house cow. Angel will be sold at weaning age and I want her new owners to welcome a well trained heifer into their lives. #misssallyschoolforgentleheifers #housecow #housecowtraining #jembellafarm

23.01.2022 Today's wood oven baked sourdough loaf is almost cool enough to wrap for the Farmgate stall.

21.01.2022 Today's wood oven baked Sourdough loaves. One to gift and one for the Farmgate stall.

21.01.2022 This morning we drove across the valley to collect Andy the Angus calf that we'll raise with Honeysuckle's excess milk. He's in quarantine for a few days before joining Honeysuckle and her new calf Angel. Who knows, she may even foster him. Wouldn't that make my life a tad easier?. But if the planets don't align, I'll continue bottle feeding him for the first few months.

18.01.2022 An update on little lamb Merri after she was brought to us almost a month ago. Suffering pain and trauma from the horrible procedure of Mulesing, and being seperated from her mob, her rescuer brought her to us. She didn't ever take to bottle feeding but quickly discovered that if she suckled on a ewe from behind whilst the ewe's own lamb was suckling, she could get adequate milk. Soon she was suckling from both mums in the lactation clinic. The ewes began to produce more milk, such was the demand on them, and Merri has filled out nicely.

18.01.2022 Say Cheese! An experimental buttermilk cheddar now ready to come out of the press. The buttermilk is a by product from my twice weekly buttermaking and I'm constantly experimenting with ways to use it up. I'm trying it as a culture for a unique cheese so I'll tell you the results in a few weeks or months. In the foreground are 2 small Blue Vein cheeses which will be ready to eat in a couple of months.

17.01.2022 It's honey harvesting time. More honey is coming in and storage space is diminishing. What to do? For a limited time we're offering our customers the opportunity to purchase a 12kg bucket of Jembella Farm Raw Unfiltered Honey for $132 ($11 per kg) plus $5 deposit on the bucket. Orders taken prior to purchase and collection.

17.01.2022 Bingo!! After two days in quarantine we introduced Andy to Honeysuckle and her calf Angel today. Poor Honeysuckle's udder has been so engorged despite milking her twice each day to relieve the pressure so these two hungry babies will keep us all happy.

16.01.2022 Plum Jam Apricot Jam Zucchini Relish Next in line are tomatoes ready for Tomato Sauce. What's going on in your kitchen? ... If you've got a zucchini glut here's my Zucchini Relish recipe if you want to have a go. Honestly it's dead easy and tastes delicious. http://jembellafarm.blogspot.com/20//zucchini-relish.html See more

16.01.2022 We are asked about this frequently so here's some good information about how to complete one of the most confusing PIRSA requirements for all hobby beekeepers. Inspection Records.

15.01.2022 Chocolate Chip and Coconut Biscuits this week makes a change from Anzacs (which I can just about make in my sleep by now)

13.01.2022 A Camembert ready to wrap for aging, and a couple of Washed Rind cheeses that have taken on some Blue Vein characteristics from spores in the air. An interesting and unique combo, all from the same batch made in mid July. The Blue Vein cheeses from 19th July, are covering nicely with Roquefort mould and will be ready to wrap after a few more days. Glad I've saved a jar of Quince Paste to enjoy with my favourite Blue cheeses in a few weeks. Yesterday's Camembert cheeses are soaking up some brine and will sit in the cheese cave while they develop their characteristic white mould and creaminess. A new batch of Feta is on the go with with this morning's milk from Honeysuckle and Poppy. Chesemaking addictive? You bet..!

13.01.2022 Another honey harvest yesterday. It flows best on hot days, but I was feeling heat stressed after a long hot day in the honey shed. There are many more hives to harvest but on this day of High Fire danger we will NOT BE USING A SMOKER and will postpone our harvesting to another day. Stay cool folks and please think before you act. The Farmgate stall is open all day as usual, well stocked with honey and produce from our patch.

12.01.2022 Yesterday's weekly biscuit bake sold out by mid afternoon, so this morning I'm in the kitchen again. Tollhouse Cookies or, because we're in Australia, Chocolate Chip and Peanut Biscuits.

12.01.2022 If you love drinking Kombucha and want to make your own, we have jars of starter SCOBY (Simbiotic Culture of Bacteria & Yeast) in the farmgate stall to get you started. Kombucha is really quick and easy to make at the cost of mere cents per bottle and you can flavour it to suit your taste. Today there's also sourdough starter ordered by Marilyn. Sourdough starter is available by order only, due to its sensitive nature and needs. Happy sunny Sunday friends.

10.01.2022 Why do we choose to live simply and tread lightly on the earth? Is it difficult to live this way? What does simple living mean to you? Emma nails it here in her latest blog post; a delightful read.

10.01.2022 Stocked up on Riverland citrus fruit from this gorgeous little Farmgate stall between Nuri & Greenock. And look at the beautiful labels!! Prices are so good, the fruit is fresh and delicious; congratulations Marg and Andrew.

10.01.2022 Anzac Biscuits with a cuppa on this wonderfully wet day. Our water tanks are almost full for the first time in 2-3 years.

09.01.2022 It's been a bit tricky lately with the arrival of all the baby animals to find a spare minute to bake biscuits. But here they are again, packed up and ready to go from the Farmgate stall.

09.01.2022 Busy times here at Jembella. The calves Angel & (adopted) Andy are doing well with darling mum Honeysuckle, whilst she has 15 litres of creamy milk to spare each day when I milk her each morning. There's lots of butter being made, and eaten, a bit of cheese too; and yoghurt for the dogs and chooks made from the skimmed milk. New arrival lamb brought in by a person who found her on the road one cold night during the week. Poor little mite has suffered the mutilation of mulesi...ng, a practice that's still widely used in sheep farming that should have been banned years ago. She has suffered unspeakable trauma and still feeling pain, will not take a bottle but will suckle slyly from this ewe when her own lamb is also suckling. Malnourished and fighting for survival, she has settled in with the other lambs here in our Lactation clinic. We continue trying to get her to suckle from a bottle, every 3 hrs when I'm bottle feeding some of the other lambs. Where there's life there's hope. See more

07.01.2022 Only the truly dedicated will brave today's weather to grab a pack of Anzac bickies that are fresh out of the wood oven.

05.01.2022 HAY..... Thanks to our wonderful contractor who went above and beyond his already eye watering schedule to dodge weather conditions, and bale our hay whilst it's still in excellent condition; not weather affected. These guys are true legends, working around the clock, trying to be everywhere at once for their clients. Hay is our security for the next twelve months, and now we have enough for our livestock PLUS a few bales to sell. ORGANICALLY dry grown using no chemical fertilisers or pesticides. TRITICALE & VETCH 5ft round bales. $60 per bale. Pick up only from here at Jembella Farm, Angaston.

04.01.2022 This cheddar made in February from Poppy's milk is ready to eat and I have to say that it's delicious. Note the pale colour; late summer and the cows were on dry feed only. It's green grass that adds beta-carotene in milk which produces the rich yellow colour of winter and spring products. You won't notice the fluctuations in mass produced dairy products though. Raw milk cheeses from organic grass fed cows.

03.01.2022 We try to use everything that's either recyclable or has been recycled, so maybe you can imagine my glee when I found these hand written labels in a bag of jam jars left in the Farmgate this week. Thanks Jo.! A new batch of Anzac Biscuits is baked and ready to package with recycled tags. Happy Friday friends.
