We know that we can’t always ask our students to take off the armor at home, or even on their way to school, because their emotional and physical safety may require self-protection.... But what we can do, and what we are ethically called to do as teachers, is create a space in our schools and classrooms where all students can walk in and, for that day or hour, take off the crushing weight of their armor, hang it on a rack, and open their heart to truly being seen. Like millions of people during this COVID-19 crisis, I have been on the steepest learning curve in navigating new ways of communicating with my students and colleagues. I am a teacher. 01.01.2022 My goodness it's been a long time between drinks here! I've been hunkering down to balance writing my PhD thesis with the busyness of the academic year. Teaching at the university has now finished for 2019, but the last week or so has provided opportunity to hear how students' thinking has been shaped and honed over our time together. I am so proud to see the expansion in their critical perspectives on themselves and the world around them, and I now get to enjoy reading the papers they have crafted.
