05.01.2022 A school leader indirectly improves outcomes for students, through the way/s they work with staff. Building trusting relationships with staff is just the beginning of great outcomes for our students.

04.01.2022 Holiday hang-over is real. In my experience it often takes a week for students to recommence their healthy sleep routines after holidays. Part of this issue comes from the contribution of screen time. This is a timely reminder for our young people (and adults!). It seems very young children are most at risk. The more time toddlers and preschoolers spend on smartphones and iPads, the greater risk of negative impacts on their social, emotional, and cognitive development, and sleep quality and quantity. https://www.theeducatoronline.com//excessive-scree/276329

04.01.2022 Mark Williams is a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience. He writes: Did you know that Australia is No 1 for device use in schools?... According to OECD data, Australia comes in No 1 for the amount of screen time in our schools. While we are struggling to meet international standards for literacy, maths and science. Independent peer-reviewed research consistently shows poorer learning and memory when students use devices. And the OECD Education Chief Andreas Schleicher has said that technology is doing more harm than good in our schools today". His statement is based on the myriad of data collected by the OECD over many years including the PISA results. Some claim that students need to use devices to learn the skills necessary for the 21st Century. Ever seen a 6-year-old that can’t use an Ipad? These devices are so ubiquitous because they are easy to use. More relevant is the fact that these are not the skills they will need. According to the Brookings Institution, the most commonly identified skills necessary for the future are creativity, communication, problem-solving and critical thinking. Research shows that all of these skills are better taught on paper than on a device. Isn’t it time we had a rethink about the amount of time and money spent on devices in schools? #education #schools #students #learning #future
