25.01.2022 Home State Heroes Safe Pets Safe Families - South Australia This is Amber's story. *Warning* This story details abuse and won't be suitable for all au...diences. "I wouldn’t be alive today if it wasn’t for my dogs and my dogs would not be alive if it was not for Safe Pets Safe Families," - Amber. Like many Australians, Amber has experienced an abusive relationship which began as small incidents but escalated into life threatening situations. Her partner abused her, threatened her and the safety of her loved ones, including her dogs Ruby, Red and Rufus. "My dogs had been confined to the back garden and were not allowed inside when my partner was home. At the end of June 2017, I left, but I was not able to take Rufus, Ruby or Red. The next few months resulted in apologetic messages, abusive phone calls and threats towards Rufus, Ruby and Red. Each day, I was putting myself back in danger to go to the house whilst he wasn’t there to feed them, they were the last link to me being free from him. I was at breaking point, but I couldn’t leave my dogs. Financially, I couldn’t put my dogs in boarding and the shelters couldn’t offer me any long term stays. I was forced to re-home Red and thought I would never see her again; but at least she was safe." With the help of Safe Pets Safe Families - Keeping people & pets together, Amber was reunited with Ruby and Rufus, after they received some much needed respite. Without an organisation like this, many people trapped in abusive relationships will struggle to keep not only themselves safe, but also their pets. 16.01.2022 Another important reason why we need a warehouse, its not just a Pet foodbank....Please donate and support the growth of our Youth and Pets program YAPP (Yo...uth & Pets Program) - Empathy and Education for at Risk Youth & Pets YAPP provides support to youths to empower them to become responsible pet owners, while reducing the risk of animal abuse and domestic violence. YAPP also provides access to affordable, low payment veterinary care to the pets of at-risk youth. Studies show that children who witness violence and animal abuse are 5 to 8 times more likely to become perpetrators of violence in future. Animal abuse is often a precursor to further violent behaviour in adolescents and children and a warning sign of future domestic violence. It is crucial to consider the link to pets in preventing domestic violence. When a juvenile commits animal abuse, it is both the animal and child who suffer (Journal of Pediatric Health Care). YAPP provides empathy and education to youth and pets in our society who are most at-risk of this abuse. YAPP offers vital support for adolescents up to the age of 25, to empower them to become responsible pet owners while reducing the risk of animal abuse and domestic violence. YAPP also provides access to affordable, low payment veterinary care to the pets of at-risk youth. Donate here https://safe-pets-safe-families.giveeasy.org/help-feed-our-
16.01.2022 *We need your help to keep helping sick and injured pets!* We've been contacted to help a dog of a DV survivor with a badly injured leg and a dog that was invol...ved in a car accident but unless we get donations into our Vet Emergency Fund, we simply can't which is so heart breaking As most of you know here at Safe Pets Safe Families we have a Vet Crisis Fund that offers no interest loans for urgent vet care to pets of people who are in financial hardship. This fund has helped ease the pain and suffering of hundreds of animals... it's not a hand out, but a hand up and it empowers people to still be responsible for their animals and their care which is so important. The other benefit of the fund is that many pets and people can benefit from the same money being a circular community fund, as we can help someone else with those funds once the vet bill is paid back in full. We've helped in some very urgent and expensive cases lately which means our funds are dangerously low... But how do you say no to an animal suffering? We urgently need donations to ensure we can still help members of the community that need it... We're hoping down get back up to $5000 but anything at all you can contribute would be a great help Just know that your donation will be used and paid back over and over to help an animal that needs urgent care... https://www.paypal.com/donate/

09.01.2022 ARCAP response to the NewAccess Coaches Initiative: The Honorable Greg Hunt Minister for Health... Dear Minister, Re: Access to Health Coaches via the MBS and Australia’s COVID-19 Mental Health Crisis Response I am writing to you in my capacity as a Director on the Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (ARCAP) to highlight ARCAP’s concerns regarding recent media coverage of mental health reform recommendations from several highly respected and influential organisations including Beyondblue, the APS, and Black Dog Institute. The recommendations, which appear in an article entitled Push for coaches to help relieve mental health crisis in The Age on Sunday 9 August, focus on Beyondblue’s recommendation to the Productivity Commission on the uptake of health coaches to deliver low-intensity mental health support. The article, which drew significant public attention, cites an urgent need to address an exponential rise in demand for mental health services as a result of the Stage 4 restrictions in Victoria and proposes MBS-funded access to health coaches as part of the national mental health response to COVID-19. ARCAP and our members have serious concerns about this proposal. Firstly, the emphasis on rapid expansion of access to health coaches dangerously confuses a need for additional low-intensity mental health services in the Australian health system with the specific, acute and often complex needs of the many Victorians and other Australians currently seeking mental health crisis supports as a result of COVID-19. Secondly, the recommendation to engage health coaches for the delivery of Medicare-rebated low-intensity services entirely fails to recognise the highly skilled and trained workforce of Counsellors and Psychotherapists, who are ready to deliver a range of mental health services immediately. ARCAP acknowledges the importance of low-intensity cognitive behavioural therapy coaching in meeting the needs of mental health consumers and we support Beyondblue’s recommendation to increase access to low-intensity supports for all Australians. However, low intensity services are only a partial response to meeting mental health needs. We are concerned that mental health coaches are not appropriate as a crisis response to the escalating mental health issues in the community, particularly in Victoria, due to COVID-19. The escalating mental health crisis in Victoria does is not only the result of a sharp increase in Demand for low-intensity services, but also reveals an alarming rise in presentations of much more serious mental health issues including self-harm, which require a clinical response. ARCAP would like to acknowledge your ongoing support as Minister for Health for our profession and your repeated recognition of the important role played by Counsellors and Psychotherapists in providing mental health services to individuals and families in times of crisis and in supporting clients experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, loss, trauma and related conditions. We wrote to you early this year encouraging the Australian Government to make greater use of the under-utilised workforce of counsellors and psychotherapists for the delivery of MBS services as part of the COVID-19 pandemic response. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are trained and well versed in providing evidence-based therapies to clients with a range of mild to moderate mental health conditions. As the impact of the pandemic continues, we are increasingly concerned that Australians in urgent need will experience even longer delays to accessing clinical treatment from psychologists through Better Access. ARCAP understands that the Australian Government is currently considering recommendations made in the MBS Review and in the Productivity Commission’s Final Report on the Inquiry into Mental Health. We encourage you once again to support Australians’ mental health and wellbeing by prioritising the inclusion of Counsellors and Psychotherapists as service providers in the ongoing national mental health response to COVID-19 and in the provision of Medicare-funded services. Yours faithfully, Philip Armstrong Chief Executive Officer of the ACA and ARCAP Director Di Stow PACFA President and ARCAP Director

08.01.2022 Imagine the heartache of having to surrender your best friend and beloved pet during one of the hardest times of your life. People who experience suicidal thoug...hts are also sometimes faced with the dilemma of having to surrender their pets in order to spend time in a treatment facility. The heartbreaking reality is these pets are often the only stable thing in their owner’s life. We at Safe Pets Safe Families work tirelessly around the clock in order to take calls from clients, police, paramedics and more, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Not only because we know how precious the connection is between these people and their pets, but we know that we really do have their lives in our hands. www.safepetssafefamilies.org.au See more

01.01.2022 Not many of you would know this but in the ideas stage of building a charity in 2013 Safe Pets Safe Families was a program under a different charity I founded first in 2014 I named it The Rewind Effect, the concept behind the name is to rewind back to the roots of the issues, in other words you need to heal from your traumas to break the cycle. When I was in a relationship with my ex partner who I met at 16, I was in a cycle of intergenerational poverty and I didn't even k...Continue reading
