23.01.2022 Thankful Thursday - thankful for a community full of caring volunteers. I had the opportunity to share with this lovely bunch about my work (way back in July!). Part of my service is knowledge of local supports and community groups including a partnership with Loxcare Inc, stay tuned!!

23.01.2022 Hello! A bit more about me..... I have been based in Loxton since I move here with my parents in 1999, although I did spend six years in Adelaide for study before landing back in the area to start my family and career as an occupational therapist. I am married to a local farmer and we have three children, a boy and a girl in primary school and another son in heaven. ... Mental illness has been a part of my family’s life since I was a child and then in my early twenties it became part of my own personal journey too. Counselling is not just about mental health but it was experience in this area which gave me a huge drive to study counselling and to help people when they are in the difficult patches of their, lives whether through stress, grief, relationship difficulties or mental ill-health. I love meeting and listening to people from all walks of life. We all need support from time to time and I value being a resource to anyone who asks. My favourite hobby is reading.

21.01.2022 An interesting blog discussing the evidence on the effects of counselling - conclusion - 'Counselling works in the short-term and long-term, so long as it is practiced by a skilled counsellor using evidence-based techniques, in addition to having strong empathic interpersonal abilities to facilitate a supportive therapeutic relationship.'... Has counseling worked for you?

20.01.2022 UPDATE Cross Border Community Counseling Offer Thank you for all the support I've received from the community. It's so good to see people thinking about their own, and looking out for others mental well-being. Due to bookings made I will only be available 9.30-10.30 tomorrow for 'hanging out/drop-ins' but please feel free to make contact via phone/email/fb and I'll be back again next week :)

19.01.2022 I really appreciated this post written by a friend. We all have hard, struggle times, Shelley shares some tools that help her. Thank you Shelley for your #reallife #honesty #selfcare #outofthefunk I’ve had some dark days recently, been extremely fatigued, this brings on the anxiety and depression, then the overthinking begins, which then brings on the fragility, where I become defensive, snappy, disconnected and all I want to do is cry. I feel too tired to move my body, and l...ack motivation, and of course movement is what I really could use at this time. Motion creates emotion, moving our bodies can help to break us out of negative patterns and change our state of mind. It becomes a real catch 22! I managed to get myself out of my funk, and am in a better state, but I know that those kind of days can return. I am cancer free, getting stronger each day, and my hair has grown back, yet cancer survivorship isn’t as easy as it looks, and the scars I carry take time to heal, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It’s bloody confronting to have to face your own mortality. I have had to find ways to nurture my body, mind, heart and soul, so I have the resources within me to do the best I can. Some of the things I do to care for my heart space are yoga, meditation, listen to inspiring podcasts, walking / being in nature, reading, gardening, qigong ( this is the most amazing spiritual practice), and keeping a gratitude diary. When I was in hospital and at the village I kept a gratitude diary, and of late I let that slip, I am still practicing gratitude, but I’ve gone back to the diary. There is so much power in written words. Today I spent the day writing and journaling, and even wrote some poetry. Let that creativity flow...not saying that it is any good mind you, but it’s just for me. The introspection and expression it allows is so therapeutic. My psychologist, recommended I write my story, not for anyone else, but to get it all out, as therapy. I started, it was still to raw, maybe the time will come, maybe it won’t. For now, I’ll write my little heart out about whatever takes my fancy. We all face good and bad days, find what works for you, find what brings you refuge.

17.01.2022 Could you do with any of these benefits in your life? I'm away with my family next week but still available for enquiries and bookings :)

17.01.2022 Thank you iPlay Therapy - Riverland for sharing this image. Holding space is also an important part of a counselling session, space to share your stories and struggles, along with, when ready, working together to develop goals and strategies.

14.01.2022 Some inspiration for your week :) #kindness

12.01.2022 I am a Loxton farmer’s wife with friends and family impacted by SA’s most recent Vic border restrictions. I follow closely the @Cross Border Call Out facebook page, please consider signing the petition to support these communities. I believe we can both look after our health, seeking to prevent COVID infections AND be compassionate and understanding of unique local contexts.

10.01.2022 What a great initiative by our local council - if eligible make sure to take advantage! And as a new member of Loxton Chamber of Commerce I'm excited to say vouchers are redeemable for counselling sessions!
