19.01.2022 Teddy Sheean, an 18-year-old with less than two years at sea, was an Ordinary Seaman on the minesweeper HMAS Armidale when it came under heavy attack from Japanese aircraft off the coast of what is now Timor-Leste in 1942. Sheean is recorded as helping launch life rafts before returning to his anti-aircraft gun to fire at enemy aircraft that were strafing his shipmates as they floundered in the water, despite the order having been given to abandon ship. Witness accounts from ...the day have him firing as the ship sank. He was never seen again. Sheean's courageous sacrifice of his life to save his shipmates makes him eligible for the Victoria Cross for Australia which is our highest level of recognition. I believe he is the only Australian Sailor to ever receive the Victoria Cross. "Teddy's extraordinary bravery and sacrifice to protect his mates should be a time to reflect, and also celebrate, for all Australians especially at a time when we need inspiration." "I would say to all Australians as we live through the most significant adversity in our lifetimes, approaching the 75th anniversary of the Second World War, let Teddy Sheean inspire us to be a people that are selfless, caring and brave," he said.

16.01.2022 On 15 August 1945, Victory in the Pacific was announced. The Japanese had surrendered. After six years, the war was finally over. Families could look forward to being reunited with returning servicemen and women, and life could return to normal. The announcement released a torrent of emotion. Thousands of people flooded Brisbane’s streets, ecstatic that the war was over. The government called a public holiday and troops marched victoriously down Queen Street.... But beneath the jubilation ran a thread of sadness. Many would not return home, having paid the ultimate price to assure victory. And many would return home broken in body and spirit. 11.01.2022 I grew up in Alice Springs. I went out with Randall Gregory for near on 5 years, prior to joining the Navy, who won the Finke 5 times. Which I have only discovered was a record and he is in the hall of fame. Not sure if that is still the record. We used to camp every year and they would pre-run the track. It really was awesome times, camping in the most spectacular countryside. The clear nights and stars were awesome. No light pollution. Just a big fire with friends and laughs. I remember having to lift our feet as the scorpions ran toward the fire. This video was awesome. It is easier than I remember for the riders. How cool to see Randall again before and now.
