04.01.2022 What Makes Relationships Work? For over 30 years John Gottman and his research team have studied couples in committed long-term relationships. The research included married couples, as well as monogamous gay and lesbian relationships. The results of the research enabled Gottman to be able to predict with 90% accuracy, within 15 minutes of listening to couples speak with each other, who would divorce and who would stay together. Here's what he discovered: In a relationship tha...t stayed together there was a 5:1 ratio of positive to negative sentiments expressed by couples to each other. That means, couples that stay together had at least five times more positive, kind, funny, or empathic sentiments, to counter every negative sentiment. Compared to the couples that ended in divorce, the ratio was 0.8:1. Meaning, there was more negative remarks than positive. For example, more hostility, anger, and complaining compared to goodwill. The negativity expressed was enough to damage and destroy the relationship, leading to separation and divorce. That's not to say all negativity is bad. We can all learn about our partner and ourselves. But there needs to be an atmosphere of safety and security. What is the atmosphere like in your relationship? What can you do to make yours better? Perhaps you would like some help to apply some of Gottman's research and start improving your relationship today. Jenny Brown Counselling and Therapy - Individuals, couples, and families.
