25.01.2022 It's been a big year for women in the Newtown electorate. This year we also celebrated so many incredible women doing great work in our community. Here's some of our favourites. We honoured the excellent Louise Evans with the NSW Community Service award for her amazing work promoting women in sport, took part in the Wear to Change challenge in support of the Social Outfit and their work with migrant and refugee women, joined hundreds of women participating in Fashion Revolution Week to highlight the problems with fast fashion and celebrated Lidia Thorpe's election to the federal senate.
24.01.2022 This is BIG! A massive shout out to all the climate activists, student strikers, environmental campaigners, community groups, organisers of collective actions and individuals that have been pushing this for so long
21.01.2022 These wonderful folks have been rallying, holding vigils, emailing, calling and texting all week in the name of protections for koalas in NSW and today they succeeded in delaying legislation that would see vital koala habitat lost. Congrats to them all and to Cate Faehrmann for all her work on this. It was a pleasure to join you in the domain today. Now to stop the bill completely
18.01.2022 Together, we achieved some big wins this year. Here's just a few things we are most proud of. After years of campaigning with a diverse range of groups and activists we saw a massive investment in renewable energy infrastructure, a commitment for a fleet of electric buses for the inner west, saved the Powerhouse Museum so it can remain in Ultimo, and achieved important reforms for small bars and music venues. Special mention also goes to working together to get Renters Rights included in the COVID emergency legislation.
18.01.2022 Well how was that for a year. And boy does it just keep throwing things at us all. Tonight will be tough for many who won’t be able to celebrate in the usual way, the switch over to 1 Jan 2021 will be even tougher for others who will be facing reduced government support and increased financial stress, and the year ahead for those knowing that each year - pandemic or not - brings yet another year where equality and justice continue to not be realised will no doubt weigh heavi...ly. That said, movements and momentum for change continue to grow - and with them a collective sense of ‘fuck you’ to the systems of oppression, discrimination and corruption that try to crush us is emerging. There’s also a massive amount of hope that can be found in recent shifts during this pandemic that show things don’t have to be the way they have been and that when responding to a crisis things can change for the better - and much more quickly than we would have ever thought. There are also signs that the strangle-hold the white patriarchy has on our democracy is loosening, and that new, local, flexible and community-led initiatives are gaining power. That’s not to say that what lies ahead will be easy. It’s going to be a struggle and there’ll be so many obstacles for people and for communities to overcome. But as the year draws to a close and another one begins, I feel extremely thankful for all those people who I know share in the collective vision, for a more equal, more sustainable and more just world - who know that serving and contributing makes a difference - who know that being inclusive and compassionate is essential - and who above all believe we can work together to achieve positive change for people and our planet - and won’t give up. Thanks for all you do - and all you will continue to do. Have a good one. Stay safe. And be sure to follow all the health advice! Jenny
18.01.2022 60,000+ tests 9 locally acquired cases Here’s the official NSW Health info - or you can find all the what you can and can’t do under the current advice here: https://www.nsw.gov.au//what-you-can-and-cant-do-under-rul Keep it up Sydney. And much strength and gratitude to those who will find themselves working or isolated in the next 48 hours - it’s been a bloody tough year folks
15.01.2022 Happy National NAIDOC week! I hope everyone is having a great week and finding their own way to celebrate. This years theme is #alwayswasalwayswillbe and you can pick up a Gadigal Land sticker of your own suburb here: https://www.jennyleong.org/stickers_and_badges #NAIDOC2020
14.01.2022 The data obtained by SafeWork NSW showing the massive increase in incidents and injury to food delivery drivers this year, is shocking. Drivers are being paid under award wages and working in unsafe conditions and 1 in 3 are being injured on the job without access to compensation. We know that people who are on various visas, including international students and refugees, have been deliberately excluded from any of the government's Covid support packages - and so are takin...g these unsafe jobs. We need to do a lot better.
12.01.2022 We are in the thick of the last sitting weeks of the year - the good (renewables and DV reform), the bad (privatisation and land clearing) and the ugly (too many to list!) are being pushed on to the agenda. There’s also much being ignored - like the ongoing struggle of international students, temporary visa holders and non-citizens, as well as renters rights and affordability - and the broader need for large scale investment in public and affordable housing. All this is happe...ning under the shadow of ICAC investigations and dodgy grants decisions (and document shredding machines!) as well as a global pandemic, a climate crisis and a President that refuses to concede. Not to mention the misogynists and climate deniers in Canberra! It’s been an intense year alright and it doesn’t look like it’s getting any less so any time soon. So buckle in, be sure to breathe (something I also need to remember to do!) and be sure to look out for yourselves and each other. Jenny
12.01.2022 This is absolutely horrific. Asylum seekers have committed no crime and yet are continuously criminalised and traumatised by this Government. Immigration detention is inhumane plain and simple and it’s way past time that it ends.
12.01.2022 Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and the start of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. This year alone, at least 45 women have been killed due to domestic and family violence in Australia. Covid-19 has further increased the risk for women with more people having to work from home. Today, Unions NSW launched a new workplace resource, "Working From Home When Home Isn't Safe: How to respond to family & domestic violence in ...home-based workplaces" to assist workplaces in supporting their employees. The resource was developed by the Rape & Domestic Violence Services Australia and the Australian Services Union NSW & ACT and you can download a copy here: https://www.asumembers.org.au/working_from_home_when_home_i I'll also be at the Community Vigil in Hyde Park this afternoon commemorating the 45 women murdered in Australia this year. Tune into the live stream from 4pm on Domestic Violence NSW's facebook page. #16DaysOfActivism #IDEVAW
07.01.2022 The Parliament voted earlier this week to support the Greens amendment to give ICAC $7.3 million more to ensure it can do its job - the vote was 24 in favour and 16 against. Now it's up to the Premier to agree to this, if she doesn't then we'll have a stalemate and MPs will stop being paid until it is resolved. We await the Government's answer!
07.01.2022 Next week: I'll be speaking at this webinar about community solar and solutions to climate change. Solar power is now the cheapest electricity in human history, but how can we make sure that everyone has equal access as we make the rapid and necessary transition to renewable energy?
05.01.2022 Mask up Sydney. And stay safe.
01.01.2022 This is a tragedy. No-one should die at work. The failure of governments to provide adequate support - income, housing, healthcare - to everyone who needs it means people literally have to risk their lives doing underpaid, precarious work. The disgraceful greed of multi-national tech corporates making money off the exploitation of vulnerable workers makes me physically sick. ... Governments who have failed to regulate these industries to protect workers (or introduce industrial manslaughter provisions) AND the companies profiting from this both have blood on their hands.
