09.01.2022 Manta Dance Acrylic on canvas Well, it's been quite a while since I've had the chance to sit down properly with my paint brush but I finally made time! ... Although I haven't been painting lots I did have the pleasure a few weeks ago of having 10 beautiful days in Coral Bay on the ningaloo reef gathering lots of inspiration On one of the days we had the awesome opportunity to go out with the amazing crew Ningaloo Marine Interactions to swim with these amazing creatures. One epic thing I've wanted to tick off the bucket list for a long time and definitely cant wait to get back to see them again soon!! The magnificent and graceful manta ray can reach up to 7m in width! They are filter feeders and eat large quantities of zooplankton, which they gather with their open mouths as they swim. Unfortunately they are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Threats include pollution, entanglement in fishing nets, and direct harvesting for their gill rakers for use in Chinese medicine. Their slow reproductive rate increases these threats. They are protected in international waters by the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals, but are more vulnerable closer to shore.
