25.01.2022 Magnificent Rosie and her magnificent support team. It’s images like this that I felt compelled to make, right from the very first birth I attended as a doula 14 years ago. I was blown away by the beauty and desperately wanted women to see how amazing their bodies are, how hard they worked, how supported and loved they were through their births. I remember thinking "Why dont we see images like what is unfolding in front of me everywhere??" ... That is why i started photographing births. #birth #homebirth #birthphotography #sydneybirthphotographer #labour See more

15.01.2022 POST PARTUM It can be beautiful, it can be brutal. It‘s often both of these and everything in between. If in doubt...go back to basics. ... Skin to skin contact ~aids bonding ~helps temperature regulation ~calms mum and baby’s nervous system ~regulates baby’s heart rate and breathing ~stimulates breastfeeding hormones The benefits of skin to skin go far, far beyond the immediate post birth period. 13.01.2022 Meet Amy. Just shy of 42 years old. First baby. Homebirth. 41 weeks gestation. ... Rocked a 5 hour labour. In Amy’s words... I had to do A LOT of mental preparation and re-education around the normality of labour and birth after many years of being an institutionalised hospital based midwife who was too scared to have her baby in a hospital setting. During her pregnancy and re-education she found inspiration and strength from Badassmotherbirther (like many clever women do- we love you Flor!) and early in labour, her hilariously gorgeous partner Pete printed her a special mantra for her birthing space- scroll through and check it out. What he wrote was right. There absolutely was a BADASS MOTHER BIRTHER IN THE HOUSE. Welcome to the world Charlotte Sophia. 11.01.2022 Imagine, just for a moment, that as a result of the pandemic, women were denied access to epidurals during labour, for reasons regarding COVID infection risk to caregivers. What would happen? OUTRAGE. Thats what would happen. It would be declared inhumane and the removal of rights of women. Yes? Well that hasn’t happened. Of course it fucking hasn’t. But have you heard what has?? ... RANZCOG have issued a statement denying women the use of water during labour as an infection control measure against COVID. Note there is ZERO evidence to back up this move. Of all the births i attend, there are two things that consistently help women through their labours and they are CHOSEN support people, and access to showers and/or deep water immersion for pain relief. Since the beginning of COVID, varying slightly from hospital to hospital, women have been denied any more than one support person. So women have their partner with them, but no doula/sister/friend/mother and in the case of hospital transfer from home birth, often even the private midwife gets shut out on entry. And now, this. The denial of the use of water- one of the major providers of comfort during labour and birth for women who choose against anesthesia. RANZCOG’s answer?? Offer women early epidurals instead. On our backs. On a bed. Anaesthetised. Who has the control then? Fine of that’s what you choose. But if you’re backed into that corner because everything else is taken away? We need to rage because accepting this as ‘the new norm’ is not fucking ok. #itstime #waterbirth See more

This tiny bubble of time, the hours after birth, are some of the most magical hours I have ever witnessed. 09.01.2022 HOMEBIRTH AWARENESS WEEK One of the many misconceptions, or fears, I hear about homebirth, is what happens if I need stitches? Rest assured- homebirth midwives are very skilled at post birth repairs. ... First and second degree tears can be sutured at home, just the same as they would be in hospital. A sterile field is created, chlorhexadine is used to clean the area requiring suturing, lignocaine is administered for local anesthetic, and dissolvable sutures are used for the repair. 3rd and 4th degree perineal tears require a different suturing material, different anesthesia to what can be used at home, and a surgeon who is skilled in such repairs. These tears require a transfer to hospital. Thankfully it is rare for those tears to happen at home. Here you can see how @midwifejohunter set up a clean, comfortable area on the woman’s bed using chairs for her feet to rest on, and afterward she could roll over in her own bed and feed her baby, where she wouldn’t move from for the rest of the night. All in her own space, with her trusted care provider. . #homebirth #homebirthawarenessweek2020 #debunkingmyths #birth See more

09.01.2022 Such an honour to be part of this story... shared from @birthtimeworld NAIDOC week. Always Was Always Will Be. ... With the deepest respect and love and with the family’s blessings, we share these images of Teisha and her family, Birthing on Country....Yuin Country. Words can’t describe the profound honour it was for @midwifejohunter and @jerushasutton to attend as midwife and photographer/videographer, along with beautiful second midwife @louisedavidmidwifelc. As so eloquently written in the joint Birthing on Country position statement - Respecting individual choice is central to the BoC model. The identification of ‘risk factors’ is viewed through a cultural lens inclusive of the individual woman’s needs and cultural birthing practices, which enriches and informs their choices, assessment and planned care. YOU DID IT TEISHA, may this just be the beginning. Teisha’s words.... Birthing on Country and what a glorious day it was. BoC is the way our woman have always given birth to her child, on the lands of ancestors, ensuring a spiritual connection to the land for her baby. Yesterday we birthed our baby son Nullah Rungatahi Mulligamiriyara Toi out on country where my songlines sing many songs of the past, present and future, where the fresh water meets the salt water and the mountains meet the ocean. HAPPY NAIDOC WEEK MY PEOPLE MY PEOPLE . In our family we celebrate who we are and where we came from every single second of every day. Thank you to our private midwives who were also part of this amazing experience. #birthingoncountry #yuincountry #yuinbaby #wiradjuribaby #itstime #birthtime See more

06.01.2022 Wanna hear a cool birth story? Meet @cocoonbynaomi, one of my beautiful recent clients who booked a homebirth with @midwifejohunter and I. Naomi is a postpartum doula who had had a pretty rough first birth experience and was determined to change her story this time. She also happens to have her own podcast, so after her birth we decided that I would step in for an episode to turn the microphone on her so she could share her homebirth story with her listeners. Go have a liste...n and find out why she felt like this after her birth.
