16.01.2022 DIRE WARNING OVER CAR PARKING CUTS FOR REGAL CINEMA The programmer of Newcastle's Regal Cinema is warning that halving the number of car parking spaces ...will mean the end of the historic venue. George Merriman will this month address Newcastle Council about his concerns over the Birmingham Gardens public domain project. The plan includes a new bus stop, picnic area and outdoor furniture, footpaths and cycleways, but it will also mean 38 car spaces off Moore Street are reduced to 17. Mr Merriman says a seven-year community campaign recently brought the 1930s cinema back to life, but it won't survive changes to its car park. "Any other cinema could probably cope with that kind of reduction," he said. "That car park actually is our life blood, and it's key for the Regal's survival. "Patrons are the car park experts, they knew that there was an issue, and they responded in record numbers - over 2,000 objections to the loss of the car spots went into council." He says he can see the benefits of the precinct upgrade, but it goes too far. "The design is beautiful - the only thing is that if that design goes ahead then the heritage cinema that's at the centre of that design won't be able to survive. "We've tried every way to think of how we could continue but what we realise is it's just not viable. "We'd love council for have a look at it - 'zhuzh' it up, but maintain those car spots."

10.01.2022 POLICE SEARCH FOR MISSING TEEN Newcastle police are appealing for public assistance to help locate a teenager missing from Jesmond. Jamie Kiouzelis, 1...4, was last in contact with a family member on the evening of Saturday September 1 and hasn’t been heard from or seen since. Her family are concerned for her welfare. She was reported missing to Newcastle Police District, which is now investigating. She is described as being Caucasian appearance, about 155cm tall, of thin build with brown hair and blue eyes. Police have information she may have travelled to Sydney. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
