25.01.2022 #babyfoodiemindset . Babies learn through experience & observation. They rely on all their senses to explore the world around them . You may remember me saying that introducing solids is a learning process. Babies arent born knowing how to eat. Its important then that we give them the best opportunity to learn by making meal times a fun & engaging experience. ... . Start simple by letting your babies hold sticks/chunks of well cooked vegetables, squeezing cooled porridge in their hands, breaking apart pieces of toast (always choose wholemeal or rye sourdough), picking up peas & putting them on a plate. These are just a few examples and it varies depending on where babies are at developmentally. . Ultimately though these times are allowing babies to learn about how food works. I know a lot of parents fear that their babies arent actually eating anything & just playing around. In the beginning this is ok & very normal. As confidence builds it will become more intentional. . Also Ill address the elephant in the room. Letting your babies play with food is very messy. There is no way around this but to embrace these crazy times of your life and remember that when they are out of your care you will most likely miss it all (even writing this makes my heart heavy, precious moments well never get back when they are so little ). . So let them play. When you feel that bubbling sensation of frustration set in from them taking so long/not actually eating/the big mess Youre going to have to clean up. Take a deep breath & remember my baby is learning . . . #nutrition #brisbanenutritionist #infantnutrition #babyfood #babies #introducingsolids #fun #playbasedlearning #food #healthybaby #parenting #foodie #babyfoodie See more

22.01.2022 I have a lot of new followers & a lot of old ones whove stuck with me through some changes so wanted to give you a little about me . My name is Jess, Im a Bachelor qualified Nutritionist based in Brisbane. . I became a mum in September 2018 which changed my life and the trajectory of my career.... . During the introduction to solids phase I witnessed so much confusion & frustration from nearly every other parent around me. What I experienced to be a joyous time in our babies lives was not for many others - my baby doesnt eat enough, my baby wont eat vegetables, I dont know what to feed my baby, this feeding food thing is so hard. Certainly not what I want parents to go through. . I soon realised there wasnt enough support out there for parents, too much confusing information & nobody to turn to for inspiration. I felt a duty of care to fill this gap & so here I am, a nutritionist that specialises in infant nutrition and making introducing solids fun! . My mission in moving into this arena is.. Empowering parents to confidently feed their babies nutritious foods for life . I genuinely hope you get value from my shared experiences, education, recipes or whatever resonates with you most. My aim is to be authentic & practical so that you connect with me as exactly who you are too, a parent just trying their best. . If you are interested in my core beliefs/values around infant nutrition check out the comments . A massive thank you to all my followers (aka my supporters). You guys are the reason I do this stuff

21.01.2022 We went strawberry picking over the weekend at @oasis_berries farm. It was lots of fun. $20 to fill a box as much as you can manage PLUS you get to eat while picking luckily for Reuben as he did more eating than collecting Get in and get the last of these beautiful berries before the seasons out. Heres how weve used them up . Froze a whole heap ready for summer smoothies, homemade fruit sorbets & a yummy piece of ice in your cold drinks. . Made the most simple amazi...ng Jam ever! Recipe from @the.busybaker 500g Strawberries, 3 tablespoons honey & 2 tablespoons chia seeds. Slowly simmered together over a low heat. Using this Jam everywhere - on our pancakes, on plain yoghurt (pictures), over muesli, @jescoxnutritionist healthy jam drops, peanut butter & jam sandwiches. Yum! . 20.01.2022 From the get go its a good idea to expose your babies to different textures and a variety of foods. . Why? Because your babies are learning the skill of eating, different textures allows them to get good practice, different foods help them to get use to a variety of flavours and overall its helps foster life long healthy eaters. . Too often I hear from parents the struggle they experience with getting their babies to eat things outside of purées or stereotypical baby food v...s the everyday real foods adults eat. If we can expose our babies from the very beginning it increases the chance of a smoother transition to family foods. . You dont have to go all out baby led weaning style but from the moment they can start having solids giving them some appropriate whole foods like steamed sweet potato chunks, sticks of cucumber or steamed broccoli florets to play with is all thats needed. . Any little thing you can do to help shape an adventurous eater is always worth it. . . . #nutrition #nutritionist #brisbanenutritionist #wholefoods #infantnutrition #introducingsolids #babies #babyfood #baby #food #babyledweaning #realfood #parenting #babyfeeding #babyfoodie #foodie See more

19.01.2022 #realtalk . Spending a rainy Brisbane day just hanging out with you has me in all the feels. Watching your face light up when we read books, digging in the dirt together, playing trains, holding you close with absolutely no one else to worry about. Cherishing the last weeks of just me & you darling boy . Did anyone else find the transition from one to two kids bittersweet? Bursting with excitement to meet your new little love, yet seething with sadness to have to share yo...ur time. Ive been told it can feel a bit like a break up in the beginning. . Welcoming this next phase for us with an open heart & believing in what they say, your love will not divide but multiply . Ah parenthood, gets me every time. 18.01.2022 That curried mince recipe I recently posted can be made with any protein substitute. Chopped chicken (shred a roast chook for a super quick dinner), fish - barramundi or salmon, tofu. Use up any vegetables you have in the fridge too. Dinner done . Here I have done a curried sausage. Loving the house made, gluten & preservative free ones from @longyardbeef (Brisbane Northsiders check this butcher out ). Otherwise @cleaversorganicmeat do a great one from the supermarkets. ... . 18.01.2022 #babyfoodiemindset . Often as we get older our appetites are driven by our emotions, the latest fad diet or what everyone else is doing. Babies & children on the other hand, are completely intrinsically signalled. . This is a really great thing, something we need to nurture. Do this by understanding that because a baby is so in tune with their body they will know when to stop eating or how much they need to eat on any given day.... . Remember this in those times when you feel frustrated because it feels like they eat nothing or not enough to what society says they should be eating. Be careful not to judge the amounts they eat if they genuinely refuse food it may be because they arent genuinely hungry. A little bit of trust goes a long way. . An important mindset to remember around introducing solids. There is an epidemic of eating disorders out there so if we can encourage listening to your body eating from a young age its a serious win . . . #nutrition #nutritionist #brisbanenutritionist #introducingsolids #infantfeeding #babies #baby #food #mindset #babyfoodie #babyledweaning #infantnutrition #eat #eating #foodie See more

15.01.2022 #babyfoodiemindset . Mums & dads what is your relationship to food? Do you eat your vegetables & other nutritious foods? Is your pantry stocked with real food or processed/packaged things? . Our babies learn so much by what they see in us as parents & what they are brought up around.... . Please understand that if you want to instil healthy eating habits into your kids then you must role model this behaviour. . We cant expect our kids to eat vegetables if we wont or if its not the norm in the household. . In my holistic approach to infant nutrition this is something I always encourage parents to do. Start with the man in the mirror, cause remember monkey see, monkey do . It doesnt have to be a whole lifestyle overhaul but just starting simple & compounding over time. E.g I will stop drinking soft drink, next I will buy some new vegetables to try etc. Changes that are sustainable yet powerful . . . #nutrition #nutritionist #brisbanenutritionist #infantnutrition #holistichealth #mindset #infantfeeding #babyfoodie #babies #introducingsolids #changes #habits #monkeyseemonkeydo #teaching #wholefood #nutrition See more

13.01.2022 BANANA CHOC TOP ICE BLOCKS!! I know the weather is cooling down but we are so lucky in QLD to be able to enjoy frozen treats in the sun. I know my little guy never says no make these for your kids, super simple & filled with nutrition. Take some ripe bananas (if you see them on sale at the shops or markets or theyve sat on your bench too long - dont throw them out! Make these). Peel & cut in half, using paddle pop sticks (I love my reusable bamboo ones got them online) ...insert the stick to the cut end about half way up. Be gentle so the banana doesnt split. Pop into a container and freeze overnight. The next day melt 2 tablespoons coconut oil, 2 tablespoons raw cacao powder & 1 tablespoon good quality maple syrup in a small saucepan. Once combined and smooth pour into a small deep bowl. Pull out the frozen banana sticks and dip each one in the chocolate sauce. Pull out and let it freeze up. Dip again to make a thicker coating. Repeat this with however many banana blocks you made. Store in freezer. A box of banana choc tops ready to go in your freezer! I have been saying it for years, ask my friends - HEALTHY CAN BE FUN!

12.01.2022 Simple snacking Chopped cherry tomatoes w/ my pumpkin & turmeric hummus (recipe in my website), chopped avo & some grated cheese (grate your own cheese! Pre grated stuff has anti caking agents - FYI). . This plate is for a self feeding baby. 10.01.2022 #babyfoodiemindset . Feeding your babies nutritious foods does take some level of food preparation and being organised. . Being a parent is busy, let alone if you are working on the side of that. Sure, its the easy option to just grab a box of ready made food & chuck it in the microwave or open a packet & be off. I get it.... . This is why being organised helps SO much! If you can plan one day a week to make a batch of healthy muffins, freeze any leftover homemade dinners, bulk roast a batch of vegetables, have some fresh fruit and veg already chopped in the fridge or a jar of home made dip you will be setting yourself up for success. . Its a good idea to look ahead at the week and write down what you will have for dinner and where you can utilise your time to being prepared for your babies with nutritious options. . When you have 50 million other things to do then prepare some nutritious food for your baby its the practical option to grab & go. Thats cool but make that option something youve prepared earlier . If you can put that extra time in now it will make a world of difference when your children get older as they will already have the healthy eating habits in place. Be outcome focused . . . #nutrition #nutritionist #brisbanenutritionist #wholefoods #wholefood #babyfood #infantnutrition #prepforsuccess #foodprep #babies #parenthood #baby #food #foodie #mindset #outcomefocused #babyfoodie See more

10.01.2022 Strawberry & coconut overnight oats . A really great summer breakfast for you and babes. The night before, soak 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1 tablespoon chia seeds, 1 tablespoon organic desiccated coconut in 1 cup milk of choice. Mix through a handful of chopped strawberries (can use any seasonal fruit). Place in fridge to soak overnight. . In the morning mix & top with more chopped fruit + yoghurt. Yum.... . Self feeding babies - a good one to practice their spoon skills. Also chunky enough for them to grab. Warning though messy. . 08.01.2022 #babyfoodiemindset VALUE HEALTH . What you value in life generally dictates your priorities. Though it may not seem connected, placing value on health is so key when feeding your children nutritious food. . Value health = nutritious food for myself & family is really important to maintain health = I will make it a priority to ensure we eat healthy food most of the time.... . This seemingly insignificant thought process around health values is the difference between I cant be bothered to get myself organised to have some healthy foods on hand/prepare a home cooked meal vs even though I feel exhausted Im going to make sure I have healthy options available. You will always make time for whats important to you. . When you value health introducing solids (& feeding kids in general) is easier because it feels less of a chore to do, you feel more motivated, there is less frustration, it normalises the family environment to be a healthy eating space & it creates life long consistency around eating habits. . Its a different type of tip around infant nutrition but its what I believe to be most important. I want to get to the core of things and this always starts with a mindset shift. . Try it. Value health & notice how naturally your food choices and time management changes . . . #nutrition #nutritionist #brisbanenutritionist #babyfoodie #introducingsolids #mindset #values #babyfood #parenthood #infantnutrition #infantfeeding #health #healthykids #babies #baby #food #foodie See more

08.01.2022 Busy parents this ones for you CHOCOLATE TAHINI FUDGE easy to make, nutritious, delicious! Gluten & dairy free for the folks that cant tolerate it too . Make this in bulk & have it on hand in the freezer to grab instead of biscuits/chips/lollies/commercial chocolate bars/soft drink *insert any quick fix food to keep you going* WHY? . Snacking on something like this fudge is better because it contains fats = satiating and helps keep your appetite & energy levels steady ...vs up down. Raw cacao powder = High in fibre, magnesium, antioxidants, calcium & plant based iron. Key nutrients which get depleted very quickly in busy parents. Protein = again works on keeping your energy levels and appetite stable so your not just putting brown leaves on your fire (burn quickly) but a nice heavy log (slow release). . Its bloody yum too. Its definitely one you can share with the kiddies but I dare say youll want it all to your self maybe its worth making a double batch in that case haha . 1/2 cup hulled tahini, 1/8 cup coconut oil, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 pinch salt, 1.5 tablespoon raw cacao powder, 1 tablespoon good quality maple syrup (not that maple flavoured syrup they try to sell as a cheaper alternative ). Mix everything in a bowl until well combined. Pour into a tray and freeze overnight. Cut into pieces and store in freezer. 07.01.2022 #babyfoodiemindset . Understand that when you introduce solids your baby has NEVER before done the skill of eating. Therefore, just as they learn to walk and talk it takes time & practice to get it right. . I find there is too much expectations around our babies needing to eat anything and everything from get go, which in turn leads to parents thinking that babies arent interested in food. Cue the frustrated feelings!... . I also see that from this a belief is formed about the childs eating. My child is not interested in food, my child is a fussy eater etc. If these are the seeds we sow into our childrens minds this is what they will become. . Please understand that it may take a good 3 months for your baby to really start eating. From 6-9 months especially is a critical time of exploring food, tasting it, learning that it can be swallowed and fill a belly. . Our job here is to approach it like a skill that requires practice & offer them plenty of opportunities to do just that . . . #nutrition #nutritionist #brisbanenutritionist #mindset #introducingsolids #babyfoodie #infantfeeding #infantnutrition #introtosolids #babies #baby #food #babyledweaning #development #practicemakesprogress #food #foodie See more

07.01.2022 Its nice to be back after an extended Christmas/new year break Hope everyone got some time to relax. Kicking off with a #babyfoodiemindset post. . All babies are different. Some have monster appetites and polish off a full size meal, others are grazers. Some take a little while to get the hang of eating while others it takes a bit more practice. Some babies take better to baby led weaning while others prefer purée to start. . Its important to remember that your baby is... a unique individual so that when you start introducing solids (& beyond into the toddler years) your baby may not do things by the book & most definitely not the same as your friends babies that you compare them to (I say this from my own experiences, I am human too ). . Having this mindset takes the pressure off trying to get it perfect, reduces frustration around them feeding and keeps you plugged into learning what works for your baby and family (which again is totally individual). . What an absolute gift that we are all unique. Remember babies are humans too and just like your appetite, tastes for foods and styles of eating are all different to your friends/family so are theirs . . . #nutrition #nutritionist #brisbanenutritionist #babyfood #infantnutrition #mindset #babies #feeding #babyledweaning #baby #food #familyhealth #health #mind #babyfoodie #foodie See more

04.01.2022 Something special has been cooking over here in the @jesscheneynutrition kitchen, another bun in the oven due September 2020. As I enter a season of my life raising young children, its something I want to give a lot of time & love into, its important to me that I am present for my kids & also for me to truly soak up what I know is such precious, short lived times. . I have made the decision to step away from my nutrition work & focus on raising my family & also my pri...vate mentorship group work to set foundations for a life we dream of. . So posts will be further & fewer between, access to my website will be closed, workshops put on hold & my eBook will be available for private purchase only. . Moving forward I will still share nutrition hints & tips (as Iam sure with 2 kids there will be much more to learn lol), easy nutritious recipes as well as the usual insights I gain from the journey. I know social media is a big part of business these days but for me creating a strong family bond & building a legacy is more important. Bring on the crazy beautiful times + = See more

03.01.2022 #realtalk & homemade cereal! I had some horrible nausea at the beginning of this pregnancy. I thought it was bad the first time when I didnt have a toddler to look after I found it challenging to prepare food for my little man. The thought of cooking eggs, vegetables, porridge (pretty much anything half healthy) made me feel sick + the effort to do it was very low. Something I could stomach was cereal & it was very easy to prepare. Unfortunately though it was not one I... would usually endorse & with this I created a little boy who loved it So hey even a whole food advocating nutritionist has human moments. The KEY here is that I took responsibility & made changes. I stopped eating it to role model the behaviour & I replaced it with this homemade spread instead. Its a cracker of a base recipe, plus there are so many benefits to making your own cereal - you know exactly whats in it, you control the sweetening factor, its highly adaptable to different flavour combos, budget friendly when made in bulk & its nutritious. . *recipe seems like a lot of ingredients but in order to get a sustaining cereal high in protein you need a good mix of nuts, seeds & grains* . 02.01.2022 @jowhitton best ever butter chicken is seriously the best ever! This simple family friendly meal has been on high rotation at our place . Its great for little ones for a number of reasons - the chicken goes nice and soft, perfect for babies with minimal teeth, its filled with spice, perfect way to start introducing these sorts of stronger flavours to develop a varied palate (not to mention immune supporting), its a great tasting sauce that you can hide all the vegies in... if you have a fussy eater and its great for self feeding bubs or spoon fed (chopped into bite sized pieces for baby led or mashed/blended for a purée to spoon feed). Its also gluten & dairy free for families who cant tolerate these . This gem of a recipe can be found on @jowhitton website just Google best ever butter chicken quirky cooking & make these small changes to make it baby friendly - leave out chilli & salt, make sure your garam masala is mild in spice. . Served with quinoa, brown rice or a mixture of these with cauli rice, added steamed broccoli or zucchini and life gets a whole lot better . Who has already tried this butter chicken? Did you guys love it too?! . . . #nutrition #brisbanenutritionist #infantnutrition #babyfood #wholefoodbaby #wholefood #baby #food #babies #feeding #introducingsolids #babyledweaning #babyledweaningideas #realfoodbaby #delicious #nutritious #healthybabyfood #healthy #healthyrecipes #glutenfree #dairyfree #familyfriendlymeals #babyfoodie #foodie See more
