24.01.2022 Polyphenols are important dietary constituents that are often overlooked in dietary research. With the focus more often on the fat, protein, carbohydrate, vitam...in and mineral content, these modulating polyphenols are left out of the discussion. These polyphenols have a very important role in mental health. They play an imperative role in addressing inflammation of the brain and nervous system and they can also manipulate the microbiome which we know can influence our mood. Here is a great review of the effect of polyphenols on mental health done by Jessica Bayes - Nutritionist, David Sibbritt and Bio Concepts alumni Janet Schloss: https://academic.oup.com//article-abstra/11/3/602/5613091. Jessica is exploring the role of polyphenols in the Mediterranean Diet on depression. Given her initial research, which I'm sure many of you in clinic would echo the same sentiments, that our patient's diets leave much to be desired: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32861952/. Australia has a number of great researchers in nutrition and it is exciting to see more high quality research coming out from the next generation. Michael O.

15.01.2022 Right now, you may be feeling scared, anxious or depressed. Given the current situation I dont blame you. It can be so difficult to stay positive and connected when the world has been turned upside down. Self-care is so important right now. This doesnt mean you need to be doing an hour of yoga or meditation everyday I know that Im certainly not! But even just a few small things every day to help you cope and instill and sense of normality is so important for your mental... health. Examples could be: setting a regular bed time, limiting your phone use, making your bed every morning and setting regular meal times. Remember to be kind to yourself too, its ok if youre not as productive as normal or finding it hard to stay focused. Try to do something that makes you smile each day, such as phoning a friend, re-watching your favourite childhood movie or having cuddles with your cat/dog. And just know that we are all going to get through this together. If you feel like you need support during this time I'm here to help, Im now offering zoom and phone consultations focusing on lifestyle medicine for mental health. To book, email [email protected] Take care Jessica xx

13.01.2022 "Self-care is often a very unbeautiful thing. It is making a spreadsheet of your debt and enforcing a morning routine and cooking yourself healthy meals and no longer just running from your problems and calling the distraction a solution." https://thoughtcatalog.com//this-is-what-self-care-really/

04.01.2022 What self-care looks like differs from person to person. Some of us might benefit from spending our mental health day snuggled under blankets on the sofa, or in bed; others might find a peaceful walk in nature, or time with loved ones more helpful.

03.01.2022 The body does a pretty good job of detoxifying itself. It is naturally designed to be able to clear waste materials such as toxins, chemicals and old hormones in order to prevent an accumulation of potentially toxic and harmful by products building up in our systems. However, sometimes there are periods in our lives where are bodies are under stress and may struggle to carry out their normal functions. In these instances you can be left feeling tired, bloated, irritable and s...ick. So we need to get your body back into balance by supporting your bodys natural detoxification processes and removing any unnecessary burdens while it heals and resets. In my Body Reset Detox Program I help you to do just that! Visit my website to find out more, or email [email protected] #detox #reset #choosehealth https://www.jessicabayesnutrition.com//produc/show/7731454
