23.01.2022 What happens when your adrenal glands dont make enough progesterone? For the first half of the menstrual cycle, a relatively small amount of progesterone is m...ade from the adrenal glands. For the sake of this description, lets call the amount two units. Remember, the reproductive role of progesterone is to hold in place the lining of the uterus, with the additional biological functions of it being an anti-anxiety agent, an anti-depressant and a diuretic. However, your adrenal glands are also where you make your stress hormones, namely adrenalin and cortisol. The body makes adrenalin after the consumption of caffeine or as a result of the perception of pressure and urgency. Adrenalin communicates to every cell of your body that your life is in danger, even though all you may have done is had an intense conversation with a colleague and/or mindlessly consumed three coffees this morning. My point is to highlight that both physical (for example, caffeine consumption) and emotional (for example, a perception of pressure or a misunderstanding from an argument) processes can drive adrenalin production and communicate that danger is present. Cortisol is the long-term, chronic stress hormone. When you are internally rattled, cortisol communicates to every cell in your body that there is no food left in the world, and as a result it wants your body to break down muscle and store fat to get you through the lean times it perceives lie ahead. Even though food is abundant for you, and your cortisol production is likely to be coming from areas of your life about which you feel uncertain (such as your finances or relationships), your body relates it to the historical causes of long-term stress and an ensuing threat to the food supply. Since your body links progesterone to fertility, if your body perceives that your life is under threat and that there is no food left in the world, the last thing it wants is for you to bring a baby into that world, so it shuts down the adrenal production of progesterone, thinking it is doing you a great, big favour. Estrogen and cortisol, both signalling fat storage and ongoing stress, remain, while you have lost the counterbalancing hormone that helps keep you calm and not anxious, and helps burn fat and get rid of excess fluid. In my opinion, the shift away from good adrenal progesterone production, due to the constant production of stress hormones, and the metabolic and biological consequences of this, is one of the biggest challenges facing Western womens health today. I spoke about it in my TEDx talk, and this whole scenario tends to create a major a-ha! moment for women attending my weekend events. This situation alone is a modern-day, monumental shift in female chemistry, and it can torment a womans emotional and physical wellbeing. This shift plays an enormous role in whether you feel vital and alive, or whether you have to drag yourself through each day, and why you might feel a need to do everything with urgency. A female can go from feeling happy, healthy, balanced and energized, with great clarity of mind and an even mood, to having a foggy brain and feeling either overly anxious about things she cannot name, or utterly exhausted, as a result of this shift to constant stress hormone production and the subsequent low level (or absence) of progesterone. Physically, at times, she may feel puffy, heavy, bloated and full of fluid, with a sense that her clothes are getting tighter by the minute no matter what she eats, whether this is actually true or not.
