25.01.2022 Vagal tone refers to activity of the vagus nerve. This branch of the nervous system is not under our conscious control. It’s responsible for the regulation of: heart rate the digestive tract plus gastrointestinal sensitivity, motility and inflammation... emotional regulation and our ability to settle after stressful events. inflammation and thus chronic pain In early 2020 I’ll be hosting a special Vagus Nerve Workshop in Byron Bay specifically for improving emotional, digestive and physical health. This will benefit you if you’re often experiencing some of these symptoms: Anxiety and stress Brain Fog or poor memory Constipation, stomach pain, bloating, SIBO, reflux, GERD, gut sensitivities, IBS Depression, feeling flat, helpless or stuck Dizziness Low Blood Pressure Chronic Fatigue insomnia Orthostatic Hypotension Tachycardia (fast heart Rate) Vertigo Chronic Pain, muscle aches and pains, inflammation, fibromyalgia . . More details very soon!

15.01.2022 The Vagus Nerve accounts for 70% of the parasympathetic regulation of internal organs. It truly is a bridge connecting the brain to internal organs and the epicentre of the mind-body connection. Vagus Nerve stimulation is now a large part of the work I do at our clinic, and I incorporate practices into our weekly classes. Inflammation produced from organs can activate a part of the Vagus Nerve so that it down-regulates the production of inflammatory cytokines. Experiments in...vestigating the effects of Vagus Nerve activity on the regulation of several conditions such as arthritis, obesity and head trauma, have been considered for clinical application and the anti-inflammatory reflex is becoming accepted as a concept explaining neuroimmunogenic control of diseases. .L Neuroimmunogenic regulation of inflammation provides insights into how brain activity modulates pathological responsiveness in major internal organs. For instance, mental activities, biofeedback therapy, and meditation, have been reported to be positively related to increased vagus nerve activity. What effects vagus nerve function and hence the anti-inflammatory reflex? Trauma and chronic toxic stress. This can lead to chronic pain, digestive issues, poor cognition, obesity, headaches, anxiety and depression. I’ll be speaking more about this topic at the Vagus Nerve Workshop on February 1st. And for those of you who asked - yes there will be an online masterclass available afterwards . . #vagusnerve #vagusnervestimulation #autonomicnervoussystem #trauma #traumahealing #healingtrauma #chronicpain #polyvagaltheory #polyvagal #anxietyrelief

11.01.2022 How is your Nervous System listening? Below the level of concious awareness our nervous system is signalling messages about if we’re safe or not through the process of nociception. It is implicit, involuntary and it doesn’t involve thinking.... You could look at this as our internal surveillance system. It’s on the look out for danger or safety and our nervous system is shaped by our past experiences. Difficult relationships, financial hardship, a health scare, our needs not being met in childhood, chronic worry about someone we love, workplace stressors, fertility issues, an accident, losing someone we love, illness... Periods in our life like this where we’re under high levels of toxic stress effect our nervous system so that our internal surveillance signals danger even if there might not be any because it wants to keep us safe. This leads to fear, anxiety, anger, reactivity, feeling overwhelmed, stuck and helpless. Sometimes no amount of thinking positively or reframing our situation can fix how we feel because it’s physiological. This is where we need limbic system therapy. There are resources on my YouTube channel (just search Jessica Maguire YouTube) and you might like to join in the 30 Day Nervous System Regulation Challenge: www.jessicamaguire.com/thirty . We’re wired with safety as the priority, not peace and happiness. Thats’s why we need to deliberately cultivate it after toxic stress. . I’ve watched a lot of patients free themselves from this cycle. Not only did they feel better emotionally, their chronic pain, insomnia and digestive health also improved. . . #vagusnerve #traumarecovery #traumahealing #healingtrauma #polyvagaltheory

10.01.2022 Can stress really cause stiffness? Yes. An increase of sympathetic activation that happens with stress leads to alterations of the immune system. A cytokine TGF- beta-1, has been shown to serve as a bridge for that transmission and it’s also known to increase tissue stiffness via activation of myofibroblasts resulting in increased fascial stiffness What’s fascia?... It’s a band or sheet of connective tissue (primarily collagen) beneath the skin that attaches, stabilises, encloses, and separates muscles and other internal organs. Fascia is not just passive tissue; it’s sentient and aware and has direct connection to: the autonomic nervous system the immune systems, and pathways to the enteric system (our belly brain) My classes are a holistic movement concept of body-minded practices that have evolved have from 12 years of Clinical Pilates teaching, studying mindfulness and neuroscience and continuously learning as a manual therapist using acupuncture, into a fascia-focused session. Movement for structural integration, functionality and inside-out wellbeing through conscious movement is such a gift to give to yourself. And for those of you who asked: yes, they’ll be available online in the coming weeks

07.01.2022 The Buddhists use the expression to cool and extinguish the glowing embers before they ignite into a consuming flame. We can learn to catch our emotions early on and not let them ignite into flames of intense fear, anger, shame, anxiety or hopelessness. Recognising what emotions are arising early on not only helps us stay within our window of tolerance, it also allows them to guide us. We learn to do this by cultivating an Embodied Awareness for our emotional undercurrent b...efore it becomes an out of control emotional state. . Our 30 Day Nervous System Regulation Challenge participants have been trying this out with: What is going on inside me right now? Can I be with this? . Video three went out yesterday If you’d like to join as a late starter in the challenge the link is www.jessicamaguire.com/thirty .

07.01.2022 How is your Emotional First Aid Kit? Advances in neuroscience over the last 15 years have reshaped our understanding of what happens to our nervous system when we’re under threat. Threat in our modern world can be running late, traffic, business/work overload, a new project, financial pressure or relationship problems. ... It may not be the same as being chased by big scary animals but it doesn’t matter... That’s how we’ve evolved. We have a nervous system for a world that doesn’t exist anymore. We are going to either fight/flee (anxiety, anger, agitation, restlessness, tight muscles, increased heart rate) OR we’re going to freeze (shut down, go spacey, flat, depressed, helplessness, stuck) Neither of these two states are optimal. The skill of Emotional First Aid helps us to steady ourself when we feel distressed, anxious, angry or overwhelmed. The more tools you have in your Emotional First Aid Kit the faster you can return to feeling relaxed, calm and open. It’s my intention to help people grow their kit . . . #emotionalfirstaid #emotionalintelligence #vagusnerve #polyvagaltheory #neuroscience #neuroplasticity #repairingthenervoussystem #traumahealing #healingtrauma #healingfromtrauma . .

06.01.2022 Both anxiety and depression involve a chronically amplified nervous system. In depression the nervous system may swing more to freeze with associated shutdown, chronic fatigue, or feelings of hopelessness, being stuck or flat. In anxiety the nervous system may be wired to fight or flight and there may be feelings of restlessness, irritability, muscle tension or emotional overwhelm. ... Anxiety and depression don’t only occur in the mind, they’re embedded in the body and written onto our nervous system. Think of the last time you were stressed - did the body absorb it with muscle tightness, headaches or an upset stomach? Did you experience insomnia or restlessness? Have you ever gotten sick after prolonged stress? The ironic thing is that the nervous system controls change. . When the nervous system is in overdrive (we’re stressed), we experience and hence repeat anxiety and depression so change can’t happen. When trying to balance the nervous system, mental insight alone isn’t enough. We need new EMBODIED (we need to come in to the body) experiences, that are different to our typical anxious or depressed patterns. Then, we need to repeat these embodied experiences of change (a relaxed body and a balanced nervous system) to grow healthier emotional patterns. The flow on effect from these healthier emotional patterns is tremendous: it helps us forge richer and more lasting connections with others, we become far more productive, clear and creative. The entire human experience is optimised when we make changes to our nervous system. - I’ll be teaching these practices at both the upcoming #VagusNerve Workshop and the online Masterclass

05.01.2022 Embodiment + Awareness = Trauma Healing, Stress Regulation, Life Enrichment, Self Discovery. All of our experiences are of the body. Thoughts are guided by our sensations and emotions. All of our stresses, hurts, injuries and traumas, as well as the joy, goodness and feelings of safety have affected our lives - all of these change the shape of our body. ... Some changes are obvious: a slumped spine and hollow chest, rounded shoulders, stiff lower back, restriction in the hips. Some changes are subtle: a retraction on one side of the pelvis, a small skin change, asymmetry of the shoulders, a slight turning to one side of the body. We receive information about our external world from sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. Of greater importance is the information we receive from our INTERNAL sense organs: our joints, gravity receptors, visceral organs (like butterflies in our belly). This interoceptive sensory information is what let’s us know our emotions and desires. Our relationship to others is entirely dependent on internal and external sensory information: gaze, touch and speaking. Without access to this feeling life through bodily sensations our lives lack meaning. From our primal cravings to our highest creative potential: it all depends on embodiment. Following high stress and trauma tuning in to our sensations can change: we are on the lookout for danger and our feeling sense swings more to fear and anxiety. Our capacity for feeling joy, goodness and safety is less. I’ll be teaching embodied awareness practices at the upcoming Vagus Nerve Workshop on February 1st 2020. This is an opportunity for making direct personal contact with the essence of the body’s innate capacity to feel, to heal and to know. Tickets on sale soon.

04.01.2022 Imagine a recent difficult situation that might have tipped you over the edge. Perhaps it left you feeling fearful, hurt, angry or vulnerable. . One of the most valuable life skills we can learn is how to tend to our own emotions in challenging moments. This will determine if we become reactive, angry, feel anxious or depressed or if we might shut down in times when we need to speak up. ... How can we do this? Listen to your heart. Value the role your feelings play as guiding signals. ‘Somatic markers’ remind us what we value and care about and once we name what we’re feeling we have more insight into our situation. Journaling, mindfulness and regular personal check-ins enable you to tune in to your inner voice. Understand your nervous system: recognise that your brain and nervous system may respond differently when you’re under toxic stress. Recognising when you’re moving outside your Window of Tolerance into an overcharged state of ‘fight or flight’, or when you’re blocked by a ‘freeze’ response can lead to greater self understanding. Self-Steadying Strategies: it can be helpful to have a toolkit of practices that help you to emotionally self-regulate: mindfulness, expressing feelings, body focused practices, expressive writing, support from people, looking into limiting beliefs. What do you find most helpful? #mindfulness #resilience #vagusnerve #emotionalregulation #emotionalresilience

04.01.2022 Hearing your inner voice happens when you pay attention to internal physiological signals. Paying attention to any part of the body increases the insula’s (a region of the brain) sensitivity to that part. Bring awareness to your heartbeat, and the insula activates more neurons in that circuitry.... Gut feelings are messages from the insula and the amygdala. Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio, calls them somatic markers. Those messages are sensations that something feels right or wrong. Somatic markers can guide our attention toward better options through the innate wisdom of the body. They can give us confidence and trust. Yet sometimes they can signal something’s wrong when it’s not if we’ve been through a period of high stress or trauma. The part of us that once needed to be on guard in that bad relationship or difficult period, may still be trying to guide us in the present moment, even when things are safe. This can impact on our ability to relax and enjoy life and to open up to other people. Neuroplasticity means that we can learn to trust our inner voice again with training our interoception muscle. The more comprehensively we read somatic markets, the better we use our intuition. Video Two of the 30 Day Nervous System Regulation Challenge teaches this practice and I know many of you are trying this out. I’d love to hear how you found this exercise .
