16.01.2022 From the time you conceive to giving birth your baby goes through stages of rapid growth, in order to grow and develop we need certain nutrients and minerals for our cells to function properly. As adults we get this from our diet as a fetus our baby can only get nutrients from what the mother provides: therefore is it essential pregnant women eat a balanced and nutrient dense diet to supply nutrients for herself and her baby. Some nutrients required during pregnancy include ...zinc, essential fatty acids, iron, vitamin D, folic acid, iodine, chromium, B6, B12, choline and lutein. Always talk to your practitioner to determine the correct dosages of nutrients you need. As well as nutrition it is helpful for expecting mums to aim for good quality sleep each night, drink plenty of water during the day, regular relaxation practices, maintain fitness with gentle exercise, reduce stress as much as possible and limit toxin exposure. A naturopath can help guide you to ensure you and your baby are receiving all the required nutrients for a healthy baby and pregnancy. I can also help with any symptoms of nausea, reflux, fatigue, muscle cramps and constipation. To find out more about pregnancy care book an appointment and we can work together to support your needs through pregnancy
14.01.2022 What disrupts your sleep? Light and noise pollution: these can interfere with how your brain winds down and prepares for sleep. Noises that wake you at night result in less refreshing sleep quality. Even if you don’t wake your subconscious registers the sound and brings you into a lighter sleep, disrupting the time spent in deep sleep stage. Stress and anxiety: poor sleep quality and quantity is commonly a side effect of stress and anxiety as these emotions impact your ho...rmone balance needed for good sleep Hormone imbalances: hormones like cortisol, progesterone, oestrogen, and testosterone all impact sleep. The effects of these hormones is often why women experiencing menopause also have issues getting quality sleep Eating late at night: you should be finished eating at least 2 hours before bed to have good quality sleep. This is because all our digestion processes are still working when they should be resting, resulting in waking up unrefreshed.

08.01.2022 What does poor quality sleep impact? 1. Immune function: poor sleep increases your susceptibility to infections like colds and flus. It also increases the time taken for you to recover. 2. Stress and anxiety: Poor sleep impacts mood and emotional health and worsens these symptoms. Stress and anxiety can cause and worsen poor sleep and poor sleep can cause and worsen stress and anxiety, making this a bidirectional relationship. Stress regulation is impacted as poor sleep inf...luences stress hormones. 3. Memory: when you’re awake your brain learns memories/experiences then overnight as you sleep your brain makes the memory stable so you can recall these for future need. Therefore poor quality sleep means your brain isn’t absorbing and recalling information as best as it could 4. Decision making: poor sleep impacts your brain as much as being drunk does. Attention, concentration, reasoning and decision making are all impacted by poor sleep. 5. Appetite and weight: sleep is one factor that impacts your weight . When tired your brain looks for things to feel good = cravings for certain foods. Poor sleep also impacts leptin and ghrelin hormones causing increased hunger 6. Disease risk: long term poor sleep increases your risk of premature death. Making it a vital part of your health.

01.01.2022 Tips to help improve sleep 1. No screens before bed (phones, tv, laptops, computers, iPads, gaming consoles). The artificial light from these all disrupt your natural circadian rhythm (sleep/awake cycle). At minimum avoid these 1hr before bed 2. Establish a bedtime routine: this helps give your body cues that it’s time to get ready to sleep. Meditation, relaxing music, read a book (a real one not one on a phone/tablet), have a relaxing herbal tea, do some yoga, do your nightl...y skin care routine or take a bath are all examples of things you can incorporate into your bedtime routine. 3. Make your bedroom comfy, quiet and dark. 4. Use the sun to help balance your circadian rhythm. Roughly 30minutes outside in the morning and afternoon can help regulate sleep/awake hormones as these are reliant on light changes. 5. Avoid naps during the day if possible. If essential sleep for less than 1 hour and do not nap after 3pm 6. No stimulants in the afternoon and evening (coffee, tea, chocolate, energy drinks, soft drink), these will all increase energy which will impact sleep quality 7. During the daytime cardio exercise that elevates your heart rate can help sleep quality and strength training can help sleep onset and reduce night time waking. Calming exercises like yoga and stretching in evenings can be a great way to relax and calm down, useful to improve sleep quality especially if stress is contributing to poor sleep 8. Your hormones and circadian rhythm tell you body when it’s time to be awake or asleep. Cortisol levels need to lower in the afternoon to allow melatonin to increase which tells your body it’s night time so sleep time. Things that disrupt this balance include stress, anxiety, excessive alcohol intake, eating late at night, shift work, noisy bedrooms and too much light in the bedroom 9. There are many herbal and nutritional supplements a naturopath can use to support sleep quality and quantity, and address the causes of poor sleep.
