25.01.2022 It is a huge MISCONCEPTION that dietitians must abide by the Australian Dietary Guidelines. The ADGs do not apply to people with medical conditions. Swipe to see the common medical conditions affecting Australians whereby the ADGs may not apply . In fact, Accredited Practising Dieititians are one of the only professionals trained and able to deviate from the guidelines using a process called Medical Nutrition Therapy. Swipe to see an overview of the MNT process. Esse...ntially, MNT allows dietitians to develop personally tailored dietary interventions aimed at addressing the primary nutritional problems for the patient sitting in front of us. At @ellipse_health we apply the Medical Nutrition Therapy process to every individual who comes in to see us because we work with people affected by chronic diseases and conditions that are severely impacting their quality of life. For these individuals, the ADGs do not suffice and a personalised approach is required. See more

24.01.2022 Why Calorie Counting Sucks... This single meal contains >800 kcal. If I turned back the clock to when I used to count and restrict my Calories in a desperate attempt to be thin, then there’s NO way I would have consumed a meal like this. My meals used to be strictly <400 kcal so that I could maintain a total daily Calorie intake of <1200 kcal. At my worst, I restricted to <800 kcal daily. Sure - I lost weight - but my physical and mental health declined, and this restrictiv...e behaviour led to a binge eating disorder. There’s a lot of obvious reasons as to why Calorie counting sucks. When you count Calories, you aren’t taking into account the nutrient value of a meal. You aren’t taking into account the satiety factor of a meal, where the ingredients come from, or the amount of processing the food has undergone before landing on your plate... You are solely judging a meal based on its energy content. And for some reason - we think that consuming energy through food is bad... The ironic thing is that the #1 concern of most of my patients is low energy and fatigue. Above all else, people just want that energy and focus to tackle their busy days. Yet, in a world of Calorie counting and restriction - we are restricting our energy intakes in attempt to be healthy and lose a little weight. It doesn’t make any sense. When you shift your focus AWAY from Calories and TOWARDS foods and nutrients, your physical and mental health will sky-rocket . You and your family will have a better relationship with food and your improved energy levels will allow you to be the best version of yourself every single day. This meal is providing me with >100% of my requirements for omega-3 fats, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6. It’s giving me >50% of my requirements for calcium and sodium. It’s providing me with PROTEIN to help strengthen my muscles, bones and connective tissue. And it’s giving me ENERGY in the form of saturated and monounsaturated fats. During my time as a clinical dietitian, I’ve helped individuals reverse their fatty liver, put their type 2 diabetes into remission, lose >30 kg of body fat, and keep it off - all without a single mention of calorie counting !

17.01.2022 FATTY LIVER REVERSAL This patient of mine and @dr_pran_yoganathan ‘s has been following a zero fibre, meat based, low carb diet with amazing results! Her liver enzymes have reduced significantly. This patient is so intrinsically motivated and has been so diligent and consistent with her efforts over the last 12 months. She deserves this success and we are so proud of her!

15.01.2022 HELP I’ve recently switched from a Calorie-restricted low-fat diet to an ad lbitum real food low-carbohydrate diet. I felt amazing until I decided to step on the scale... and to my horror - I gained 2 kg. Has this happened to you? ... Well, believe it or not, small weight gain can be very normal and actually a sign that your health is improving! Not all weight gain is bad. There’s a few reasons why you might gain weight when your health is improving... 1) If you were sodium and mineral deficient (which a lot of people are), then you were severely dehydrated when you started the diet. Dehydration can mean you weigh 1-2 kg less than you should because you literally don’t have enough water in your blood and cells for proper function. When you finally rehydrate yourself with adequate mineral and fluid intake, you will gain this 1-2kg - but it’s not fat, it’s a sign you’re properly hydrated - like you should be! 2) When you are chronically under-consuming Calories, especially Calories from proteins, then your body will be forced to use up its stored protein over time (I.e. you lose lean tissue with chronic low Calorie dieting). A loss of lean tissue = a loss of weight. However, this reduction in weight is detrimental to health. Then, when you switch over to eating the right amount of Calories, especially in the form of proteins and other essential nutrients, your body has the opportunity to strengthen and rebuild your lean tissues again, including connective tissue and muscle mass, especially if you are weight training! If your goal is weight loss, my advice is to shift your focus and attention towards improving your BODY COMPOSITION Get a DEXA body composition scan as a baseline, then do it again in 6 months. You’ll be able to see actual changes in your fat mass, lean mass and bone density. #ditchthescale
