17.01.2022 HEALTH MYTH BUSTERS!! With so much information out there, its hard to tell the difference between fact and fiction. Weve done the work for you and uncovered five health myths that are definitely fiction. 1. Eating fatty food makes you fat - Many people believe they need to cut fat from their diet completely in order to lose weight. Fortunately this isnt the case. Fat plays an essential role in every cell in our bodies, so its important to include a range of good fats ...in our diet. 2. Gluten free foods are better for you - Unfortunately many gluten free alternatives are packed with added sugars. Others are high in cholesterol. Any well balanced diet, whether it is gluten free or not, should revolve around natural foods. 3.The scales are a good way to measure fat loss. - Whilst its important to maintain a healthy weight, most scales will only measure total weight loss without regard to body composition. You may be losing fat and gaining muscle without any change on the scales. Where you will see a change is in your measurements, so its important to record these as well if youre looking to lose body fat. 4. Calories consumed at night are more fattening than those consumed during the day - A calorie is a calorie; no matter what time of day it is consumed! The important thing to keep track of is your total calorie consumption throughout the entire day. 5. If you exercise, you can eat as much as you want - The more you exercise, the more you energy (calories) your body will require, however this doesnt mean you can eat as much as you want! You will only lose weight if you burn more calories than you consume, and you will only gain weight if you are consuming more than you burn in a day. 10.01.2022 Prioritise Nutrients: We need calories to meet immediate energy needs, but its nutrients that keep us healthy long-term. Aim for a balance of nutrients at each meal: Scale portions up or down according to your activity levels and body composition goals.... Pre-prep your meals: A little more time in the kitchen can yield big money-saving results by keeping you out of your take-out app or the drive-thru lane. Become a savvy shopper: Find the most cost-effective places! Try shopping at bulk food stores, discount grocery stores and farmers markets. Consider the unit costs: some items might have a higher price, but the cost per serving is low. So bulk up! Avoid food waste: When perfectly good food rots in the fridge, or is only half-used, its like throwing money into the wind! Plan before you shop: look at the week(s) ahead and see how many meals youll need, and how much time you have for food prep. Make a list and stick to it to avoid overbuying and impulse purchases. Learn to preserve food: Extend the life of foods from days to months (or even years) with these tips: DAYS: When whole fruits or vegetables on the counter get ripe, transfer them to the fridge to extend their life by a few days. MONTHS: When food in the fridge wont be eaten soon, transfer to an airtight, freezer-safe container or re-sealable bag and store in the freezer for 3-6 months. Lightly steam or boil veggies before freezing. YEARS: Learn how to make jams, pickles, dehydrated, fermented, cured, smoked food. Some of these methods can preserve foods for years.
