10.01.2022 "I went in not knowing much about the specifics of what I wanted, other than I knew that I wanted a piece created by Jewels of the Kimberley..." - KK Step 1 gather the elements. This time I am using 18ct gold with platinum and a beautifully cut 1.20ct diamond. The setting is formed first, tediously shaping the platinum to the exact size. Platinum is rarely soldered, most often fused making it seamless. This is the setting being fused shut at a very high temperature, upw...ards of 1700C. The platinum can then be forged into shape to perfectly fit the diamond. Claws are carved into the setting, maintaining the platinums hardness and integrity by not adding any joins. A decorative shape is carved into the bottom of the setting also. Time to add the base. Soldering the gold base to the platinum setting, at a temperature of 1650C. Only a few degrees off melting point of the gold. Eeek! The gold bar is forged through a rolling mill and by hand using hammers to form the shank (the band). It is then filed (a lot!) to the desired shape (taking my fingerprints and any chance of nice nails along with it!) I've added a temporary support to the shank to keep the finger size at the precise measurement, then gradually opened up the top to fit the setting. This is done by grinding little by little and lowering it in slowly. Time to assemble! A white powdered acid is used to coat the surface of the gold. This helps to reduce oxidisation. The claws are cut on the inside until the stone can drop in. They are then pushed over the diamond by hand (as you can see here) and gentle hammering with a small flat ended pin. I like to facet the claws after setting. These facets match those of the diamond and allow for the claws to disappear into the stone. 01.01.2022 Follow me on a journey of creation and watch how I handmake all the elements in this special ring. It all starts with the elements - A one carat Argyle White diamond sits centre with a pair of rare Argyle Pink diamonds either side. Platinum and Rose gold are my chosen metals for this ring. Forming up the seat or under bezel for the centre stone from thick platinum, this will be refined later when I add some small diamonds into the underside of this seat. The pink diamonds are... being set in rose gold, this really highlights them as a major feature in the design. I have tapered the claws before assembling the settings to create a nice sweeping shape. The centre setting also features sweeping claws which are much heavier for structural integrity. With the centre settings all assembled its time to make the shank (band). This stage is all about getting the curves just right. Finger size and diamond size set the parameters but its very easy to make something thats not curved right and the end result is a ring with no flow. I decided to pinch the top ends of the shank (the band) creating a finer and more delicate point where the pink diamonds and shank meet. Now that the ring is all in one piece, its time to set the diamonds! The small diamond in the sides of the centre setting soften the heaviness of this component. The end result, a ring which tells a story from all angles. I especially like the way this setting just kisses the centre of the band, adding to the intricacy and delicacy of this style. 01.01.2022 Custom make - pink diamond halo ring Epitome of style and grace this ring was a pleasure to handmade from start to finish. The warm tones of yellow gold really harmonised with this beautiful pastel pink Argyle diamond. A lot of time was spent making the the halo and pink diamond tightly fitted together to avoid a dark shadow line bordering the pink. I see this all too often in halo rings and it not only reduces the sparkle of the diamond it reduces the size appearance too. ...Two things you never want to happen! A little ad-hoc feature, I added a small diamond set pear underneath the setting to tie into the overall design. Hand making every element in a ring like this allows for the little changes you need to make as the ring evolves, something you just cant do with a cad or cast piece.
