24.01.2022 The late Liz Souter was an extraordinary basket maker & wove this one to house seasonal fruits in a #sukkah during #Sukkot. She wrote: 'This hanging basket is made with materials & weaves that express my feelings for the Jewish religion enduring, intricate & with a strong interwoven foundation. The uneven base represents the difficult path the Israelites have had to follow & it branches in many directions, symbolic of the diaspora of the Jewish people.' This much-loved work... from our collection can be purchased as a postcard, on its own or in a Jewish Holidays bundle, via https://buff.ly/2Zb8itq Liz Souter, Sukkot Basket II, 1999, Australia.

18.01.2022 Our latest Spiel is live & about looking forward. After many months, we can now see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, of this time apart. We can't wait to be together again & while we won't open our doors until January & set hearts aflame with our MIRKA exhibition from Valentine's Day we look forward to reuniting outside our Museum later this month. We're incredibly excited to announce #Sukkah, our collaboration with Zahava Elenberg of Clikclax & Move-in. Activ...ating at Birrarung Marr from 27 October, Sukkah will bring us together as restrictions lift to reflect on humanity & what it means to part of a community. Crafted from Polycarbonate in translucent earth, sky & desert colours, it will provide shelter & encourage us to look out towards the never-ending sky & beyond adversity. More on Sukkah soon, enjoy Spiel at https://buff.ly/33CzOU7 Studio Round, Sukkah, 2020, Australia.

18.01.2022 With the #AFLGrandFinal today, we can't help but share this Carlton Football Club #kippah from our collection though it's sadly been some time between premierships for the much-loved team. Also called a yarmulke or skull cap, a kippah is a head covering worn by religious Jewish men for many reasons, one being as a sign of respect for God. Kippot such as this are in fact manufactured in Israel & exported for Australian Jews. 08.01.2022 Beginning tomorrow night, #Chanukah celebrates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after its desecration in 164 BCE. The eight-night festival is a beloved & joyous holiday with nightly lighting of the #chanukiah, playing with dreidel (spinning tops), eating foods fried in oil such as latkes (potato pancakes) or sufganiyot (jam donuts) & giving of gelt (money) or chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil. 07.01.2022 Chanukah Appeal: At the Jewish Museum of Australia, we illuminate Jewish life. Though our lights have been dimmed in 2020, we've connected with you in new & exciting ways via the digital realm. As we approach the Festival of Lights & a bright new year, we're filled with optimism to re-open your Museum & bring you #mirkamagic, an intimate, previously unseen view into the rich & fascinating life of the late Mirka Mora. A story of survival & migration interspersed with a gen...erous dose of art, community, food & love, Mora's history is a profoundly affecting Jewish tale that will feel both revelatory & reminiscent of your own family's experiences. Your stories are stories & we intend to tell each one. This Chanukah, give & keep us shining bright for many years to come https://bit.ly/33fUhNS Athol Shmith, Mirka, c. 1955, courtesy of Kalli Rolfe Contemporary Art.

06.01.2022 #sukkahmelbourne is here! Bringing colour, play & a little of our Museum to the heart of Melbourne, our collaboration with Zahava Elenberg & Clikclax has landed in Birrarung Marr, Melbourne. Inspired by the recent Jewish festival of #Sukkot, Zahava says This Sukkah is a temporary shelter in memory of the huts used by the Israelites as they wandered the Sinai Desert during their exodus from Egypt. It is a place of memory and empathy for those who are homeless and displaced. ...The walls are the colours of the earth, desert and etrog (the fruit of the citron tree). The blue eaves remind us of the never-ending sky and encourage us to look beyond adversity. The roof is clear to see the stars at night, connected with shades of the lulav (hadas the myrtle tree, aravah the willow tree, and lulav the palm frond). The lulav reminds us that there can be taste with no scent, smell with no taste, and neither taste nor scent but bound together the attributes of one make up for the deficiencies of the other, and we are stronger together than apart. Visit Sukkah until 13 December, remember to scan your QR code to let us know that you’ve been & to go in the running for an exclusive #MIRKA pack. Thanks not enough to our wonderful collaborators & supporters who helped bring this project to life during the last challenging stages of lockdown Zahava Elenberg, Clikclax Tim Hall & Associates, Gideon Kline & Family, Lionel Krongold & the Krongold Group of Companies, Multicultural Museums Victoria, Palram Applications, Plastifab and Studio Round. @marieluises, Sukkah, 2020, Australia. #jewishmuseum #museums #sukkah #art #architecture #australia #togetherapart #weilluminate

06.01.2022 Mirka Mora was a collector; she loved clutter & surrounding herself with objects & talismans that inspired her art.
