23.01.2022 NOT IN OUR COMMUNITY. NOT IN ANY COMMUNITY Last year Jewish Care and Unchain My Heart hosted the sold-out Preventing Violence Together community breakfast in support of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Following the outstanding success of the 2019 event, we are pleased to once again join together to deliver an event to help build awareness of family violence. So often we hear: Family violence that doesn’t happen in the Jewish community, surely? Sadly..., this couldn’t be further from the truth - it happens in all communities, and ours is no exception. But it shouldn’t happen in *any* community. Coercive control often referred to as ‘intimate terrorism’ is an insidious, destructive and often hidden form of family violence. In this not-to-be-missed event, investigative journalist Jess Hill (author of the bestselling See What You Made Me Do) and gett refusal expert Joanne Greenaway (CEO of the London School of Jewish Studies) will explore the impacts of coercive control and gett refusal and what we as a community can do to respond. Join us on Zoom on Monday 7 December to hear from these incredible speakers. To register, visit www.jewishcare.org.au/nioc Tickets are $18, with all proceeds supporting efforts to end family violence and gett abuse in our community. Accessible tickets are available for those experiencing hardship; full details are in the flyer below. *If you or someone you know is experiencing family violence, please reach out - support is available. The funds raised from this year’s event are being shared equally between Maccabi, MS Society and Jewish Care. Maccabi ...have chosen to include Jewish Care this year, to support us in the work we are doing in helping the community through the challenges posed by Covid-19. 15.01.2022 CAMP FUN FOR YOUNG ACHIEVERS Camp was literally the most amazing experience of my life every minute was so much fun, and it has left me with so much to think about and explore. 23 young people headed to the bush recently for the annual Young Achievers Program camp at the beautiful Camp Sunnystones. ... New friendships and connections were formed over the three days as mentees participated in a range of activities including archery, canoeing, raft-building, geocaching, survival games, nature talks and a twilight walk and campfire. As well as outdoor activities, the group also enjoyed personal development workshops and lots of invigorating discussions and a sweet 16th celebration for one of the participants! With our 2020 camp sadly cancelled due to COVID-19, it was especially wonderful to see the group gather together and get to know one another. Here’s to a great year ahead with our incredible mentees!
12.01.2022 RAISE A CUP TO HELP END FAMILY VIOLENCE Jewish Care has developed a coffee cup campaign in support of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. With messages that encourage help-seeking and bystander action, the cups were distributed to cafes across the Jewish community in the lead-up to the campaign.... Cafes play a vital role in bringing people together, and campaigns like these send a clear message that family violence is unacceptable in our community, said Cassandra Barrett, Program Manager of Healthy Communities. This year’s campaign is focused on speaking up and creating a dialogue. Silence breeds violence and that’s been particularly true during COVID-19. We hope that seeing these cups will encourage customers to be alert to the signs of family violence, and to reach out for help if something doesn’t feel right in their relationship. Jewish Care would like to express our sincere thanks to all of the cafes who have supported the campaign and helped to spread this important message. Please show your support by ordering a takeaway coffee during the 16 Days. 09.01.2022 OUR COMMUNITY UNITES AGAINST FAMILY VIOLENCE Today 12 Jewish communal organisations joined together to support the Walk Against Family Violence. The annual Walk is held in support of the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women. While we weren’t able to gather in Fed Square as usual this year, the representative organisations Jewish Care, Unchain My Heart, Jewish Community Council of Victoria, Rabbinical Council of Victoria, AZYC , AUJS VIC, NCJWA (Vic), ...Progressive Judaism Victoria, Maccabi Victoria, Impact, Pathways Melbourne and The Australian Jewish News joined together for a COVID-safe walk in Caulfield Park to send a clear message that we stand united against family violence. The Walk attracted plenty of attention from passersby who stopped to applaud, share their support and give thanks, and included a poignant moment of reflection in remembrance of the women and children who have lost their lives this year. Our heartfelt thanks go out to our partner organisations for their support. Faith communities play a crucial role in ending violence, and it is incredibly heartening to see our community come together in this way. We look forward to the day when the Walk is no longer necessary. Family violence is preventable; it is unacceptable; and it has no place in our or any community. #WAFV2020 #WhyWeWalk
08.01.2022 CALLING ALL MEMBERS OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY The intensity and immediacy of COVID-19 has caused unprecedented change to our community. Please help us in our efforts to gather this critical feedback so as we can better understand, plan and respond to our community at a time when help is needed most. We sincerely thank you for your time and contributions.
