18.01.2022 This weekend, temperatures reached 30 degrees Celcius in the Arctic circle - 30 degrees warmer than usual. With the world fast running out of time to prevent runaway climate change, the choices we make today matter. Here in Australia, there’s another deadline fast approaching - end of financial year. One of our donors has been so motivated by the unprecedented Arctic heatwave that she’s offered to match every donation we receive between now and June 30. ... Would you help scale our impact by becoming a donor today? https://www.givenow.com.au//public/jewishclimatenetwork202 Over the last 12 months, through the Jewish Climate Network initiative, we’ve proved the power the Jewish community can have when we work together for climate action. We have: Built a highly skilled and engaged board with leaders from many sectors of the Jewish community; Presented and helped lead sessions at many Jewish community events including Limmud Oz Online, the Social Justice Summit and climate-oriented Tikkun Leils; Held online climate workshops with senior students from Jewish schools; Supported the King David School to become fully solar powered! Hosted community events in Sydney and Melbourne with Jewish American author and climate advocate, Margaret Klein Salamon; Supported climate emergency declarations in various councils, with the result that 85% of Melbourne Jews now live in a council that has declared a climate emergency; Engaged constructively with leading Jewish organisations and peak bodies; Employed our first staff member, the wonderful Elinor Hasenfratz; Started expanding our membership base from Melbourne to Sydney; Raised enough funds to bring on a CEO, which we will shortly be advertising for! Our experience over the past year has shown us that the Jewish community has the capacity, energy and resources to be a leading force for climate action in Australia. Becoming a donor now will drive even further change in the year to come. Your donation will be matched dollar for dollar - doubling your impact. With thanks, Eytan Lenko, Rebecca Forgasz, Tamar Simons, Debbie Lenko, Ricky Pearl, Marc Light, Gary Samowitz and Gideon Reisner. 13.01.2022 Our CEO Joel Lazar has hit the ground running. Here are some reflections after 24 hours on the job: Yesterday was my FIRST day as the new and inaugural CEO of the Jewish Climate Network. A ‘strange time’ as we all love saying nowadays. There are so many reasons why this work is now my life. I want to share just one for now.... In the photo below, on the far left, is me. Grade 2. Yavneh College. Rabbi-beard made of cotton balls, stuck together with PVA glue. High quality costume design. The chumash party: a rite of passage. My classmates and I are holding up paintings representing each day of Creation in Bereshit (Genesis). I am holding 'The Sabbath' (and a microphone - you couldn't get that damn thing out of my hand. Always the performer). My classmates are holding up the creation of the galaxy, the forests, the animals, the weather, the oceans. Light. This is what I learnt from a young age: The world is an inconceivably miraculous, life-giving home. But our tradition tells us: ‘lo bashamayim hi - life is not in the sky’; it is here on solid ground. Home is Elsternwick where I was raised. It’s Ripponlea Gardens where I had family picnics on Sundays. It's the caravan parks of Torquay and Anglesea where I holidayed and played cricket with crappy plastic bats that we got free from Milo competitions. It's Classic Cinema where I chomped on popcorn at youth movement movie fundraisers. But what compels me even more about this photograph, are the cardboard sentences above our heads which loosely read: "respect the elderly" and "Moses gave us the Torah". This is what’s at stake for me: 3,000 year-old chains of wisdom, ethics, belonging and connection. The science is rattling our Jewish chains. When the hot days get hotter and more frequent, the storms rage wilder and more unpredictable, the economic and political stability of Australia and Israel incite more conflict and scapegoating, our tradition rattles and faces threats unlike we’ve ever faced before. As we’ve glimpsed with COVID-19, I see cancelled Shabbat dinners and festivals. Hundreds of days of lost Jewish learning. I see heat exhaustion and further pandemics threaten my parents and grandparents as they move through their senior years. I see all the post-Holocaust investments we’ve made in our properties and businesses at risk of heavy losses. That’s why I’ve taken on this new role. That’s why not just any climate group, but a Jewish one. Because my tradition also offers the hope and roadmap to the future I know is possible. Reb Nachman of Bratslav and his joyous followers would sing: The whole world is a very narrow bridge - but the main thing is not to be afraid at all. Herzl taught us similar things about the Will to Dream; so too Israel’s national anthem: Ha-Tikvah, The Hope. I am full of energy to Will, to Dream, and to Hope together. Yalla.

08.01.2022 We are absolutely thrilled about the moral, economic and educational vision shown by Bialik College in this huge solar panel announcement (saving $66K+ a year on your electricity bill ain't bad either) . Last month it was The King David School with their huge solar announcement (https://bit.ly/330Py2q). . The Australian Jewish community can become a leading force for climate change in this country. But it won't 'just happen' - we have to move fast and decisively.... . If your Jewish school community hasn't yet made the switch to renewables we ask, as Hillel did: "if not now, when?" See more

08.01.2022 We are excited and proud to announce the appointment of the Jewish Climate Network’s inaugural Chief Executive Officer, Joel Lazar. Joel will start on 12th October as he wraps up his role as Head of Operations at The Man Cave, a Melbourne-based nonprofit that empowers boys to become great men by providing them and their communities with impactful programs, role models and resources. We are thrilled to have Joel bringing his energy, superb communication skills, and organisat...ional nous to the Jewish Climate Network. Joel is committed to bringing the best out of everyone he works with to make a real impact tackling the climate crisis. Joel’s passion for Judaism and the Jewish community runs deep. He attended Leibler Yavneh College, lived in Israel for four years (including an Aliya stint with his family), studied in various yeshivot, and has held various leadership roles in Jewish youth movements and synagogues. His commitment to social justice in a Jewish context culminated in him receiving the Ron Castan Young Humanitarian Award in 2019. With his background in commercial law and a range of community organisations, and his passionate belief that the Australian Jewish community can take a lead role on climate action, Joel is well placed to lead our organisation into the future. Mazel tov Joel Lazar, we are delighted to have you!

04.01.2022 Leora joined one of our online climate conversations last week . So why is she looking so smug today? . Because she's writing to her super fund telling them that she only wants her money invested in companies contributing to a clean, safe, climate ... . If they can't guarantee that, she'll be taking her investment elsewhere . Shkoyach Leora, being the change you wanna see. . https://www.responsiblereturns.com.au/ https://www.marketforces.org.au/superfunds/ . "As investors in Australia’s largest companies, including big corporate emitters, superannuation funds can play an important role in Australia’s economic decarbonisation" (Climateworks; Monash Uni, Sep 2020) See more

04.01.2022 Last night we ran our first online climate conversation. How did it go? Hear from a high school teacher who took part: "I learned so much from this session. Knowing the data isn't enough. We need talented educators/communicators to help us understand the gravity of the data, sometimes it can feel overwhelming. JCN helped me understand the global picture and how climate change will affect my personal life in the future.... Thanks for making me FEEL this issue rather than only know about it." If you want to host or attend a conversation with us, and leave knowing that you're a part of the solution, then head to our website to book it in: www.jcn.org.au

02.01.2022 Tonight marks the start of the Jewish holiday of Tisha B’Av. On this major day of communal grieving we mourn the many tragedies and expulsions faced by Jewish people over the course of history and most specifically commemorate the destruction of the ancient Temples in Jerusalem. It is a story of destruction, but it is also a story of radical transformation, because it meant the end of the sacrificial system and the birth of a practice of deeds and prayer the Judaism we kno...w today. What comes after the Temple is a story of rebuilding not the same structures, but a new way of life. It is a powerful example of a complete societal transformation the kind of transformation we need in this moment, as we face the coronavirus-induced economic crisis layered on top of a looming climate crisis. We must address these crises together and build a just, sustainable world for generations to come. As our leaders debate billions of dollars in economic bailouts, this is our opportunity to close the gap between the world as it is and the world as it could be.
