25.01.2022 Here's my blog post about this week's art project. Enjoy.
23.01.2022 Progress on my little Isolation Houses has been a bit slow lately as I work on other projects. Seeing this work by Rosie James inspires me to get my act together!! Isn't this fantastic. I'd love to see it in real life.
22.01.2022 For the first time since Covid began to change our lives I am gallery sitting for the Royal South Australian Society of Arts. Lucky lucky me! I'm surrounded by variety, beauty & skill. The value of a members exhibition like this is the range of techniques & styles on display. The exhibition is on until 29 August & is well worth a visit. Here are a few of my favorites... #royalsouthaustraliansocietyofart
21.01.2022 How fabulous is this! Genius & skill!
19.01.2022 I'm currently gallery sitting for the RSASA where the exhibition 'Perception' is gracing the walls. It is always a treat looking around these walls & taking in the variety in both subject matter & technique. The exhibition is on until 3.30pm tomorrow & worth a look if you're in the city. Here's a few of my favorites.
17.01.2022 This is a very interesting short film about an exhibition of Nancy Crow's latest work. It does end abruptly, so don't panic!
17.01.2022 Don't die of shock, but I have begun a new Weekly Art Project. This time all of the WAPs in this series will be inspired by my experiences in just one day, in one place; The Alhambra, Spain. Here's my blog about this first project. Enjoy.
16.01.2022 In the workroom today I was working on compiling my weekly art projects into a book form. During the week I've been embroidering the cover whilst watching tv in the evenings. Today I put it all together. Now I just need to add some written content!
15.01.2022 This is extraordinary! It's not a long film clip & definitely well worth taking a moment to watch. Prepare to be gobsmacked!!
15.01.2022 I worked on my weekly art project book again yesterday & realised that I really didn't plan this out very well!! Having decided I needed to include a brief statement about what inspired each project I spent the morning on the computer typing them up then printing onto to cotton. As I was ironing them all before cutting & stitching onto the appropriate pages it did occur to me that it would have been MUCH easier to machine sew them into place before backing each piece. Sigh. Hand stitching these on will take a while.....!
13.01.2022 Today's work on my next WAP book is a bit boring, so I thought I'd share something else I've been dabbling with the past few weeks. Sometimes my usual means of artistic expression just doesn't do or say what I want it to! I am becoming more open to then looking for another means of conveying an idea. Lately I've been developing these little stitch & stick pieces in response to the increasing number of new houses that are being crammed onto land that once was considered a 'fa...mily home'. Trees, lawn & garden are being removed to make way for swathes of concrete & the new home blueprint only includes a teeny tiny space for small manicured plants. There is definitely no room for trees. Using my own large garden and significant trees as reference & inspired by Natalie Ciccorico's work, I've developed two styles I'm really pleased with. Here's a peek at a few of the better samples. 13.01.2022 Each year at this time in Adelaide, we celebrate South Australian Living Artists (SALA) festival. It is a month when exhibitions abound in both expected & unexpected spaces. Every year my friend & I would start our 'SALA Day' with a glorious hour or two at the Kangaroo Island Artists exhibition. There we would have a chat with curator Fleur Peters, recognise artists we remembered from previous exhibitions, identify those who were new & those who who weren't there. It has ...been a wonderful ritual each year & we eagerly look forward to it. This year has broken that pattern. With the devastating bushfires & the uncertainties of Covid, this year the KI artists have not joined us in Adelaide. They have however, enabled us to join them virtually! Here is a very special exhibition by the artists of a very special Island! Grab a cuppa & enjoy See more
11.01.2022 I've finished two books this week. #1- My weekly art project book inspired by travels in Egypt which I have also been blogging about. #2- My Sunday afternoon drawing book where I have engaged a few different drawing styles to capture aspects of our garden. I feel so good about these small accomplishments! Yeehah!!
11.01.2022 As I was wiping down the shower tiles this morning, this clump of hair reminded me of the series of flowers I made inspired by similar tile deposits for my exhibition The Art Of Cleaning. I wanted to illustrate how beauty can be found in the most unlikely places. A number of people were disgusted that I had used hair deposits as a source of inspiration. Maybe I am crazy, but I still think there's beauty there. Now in my workroom about to start a couple of hours of handstitching, I've pulled the last of that series out to keep me company. ;-)
10.01.2022 I've just eaten my cereal listening to this interview with local artist Janet Ayliffe. Aside from producing the sort of art that makes your soul sing, Janet is one of those approachable down to earth people who instantly make you at ease. This comes through in during this zoom chat with Tania Ingerson who has started a series of podcasts called TEA- The Entrepreneurial Artist. Well worth grabbing a cuppa & some stitching before listening.
09.01.2022 I made a good start yesterday on preparing my WAP's to become a fabric book!
09.01.2022 This week I dabble with a portrait in my Weekly Art Project. Here's the blog post which explains how it all went!!
09.01.2022 Do any of you textile or arty people in Adelaide use or want to use cassette tape in your art making? Knitting? Crochet?weaving?? If so...I have some old cassette tapes I need to get rid of & offer them free to anyone happy to come & collect.
09.01.2022 This week's blog is the last in my Egypt inspired series of weekly art projects. I'm trying to decide which travel adventure to focus on next....there are a few options! We'll have to wait & see! Meanwhile....enjoy!
07.01.2022 Better late than never....here's this weeks art project. Enjoy & be inspired!
07.01.2022 I was looking through my newly acquired book ' The Intentional Thread' by Susan Brandeis this morning & was fascinated by the glimpses of her work used to illustrate the book content. I wanted to see the bigger picture of what she creates & found this fabulous clip on YouTube. The book is beautifully written & has lots of helpful photos, but this film puts those photos of small details into perspective within her finished work. Enjoy.
07.01.2022 Earlier in the year I watched a most beautiful little film by India Flint, where she took a piece of calico for a walk & a soak around her property & allowed it to absorb the colours of that particular time & place. Where I live is a much smaller site, never the less, I thought I'd give something similar a try. After a stormy night, I covered a piece of calico with branches, bark & leaves, & left it there exposed to the weather for a month. Here's what became of it...
06.01.2022 I've been a bit quiet here lately. Partly because I've been busy working on exhibition pieces & partly because I've had a lot of non-art life happening. I will return to weekly art projects soon, but in the meantime here's something I can share. During a short break in Deep Creek Conservation park, South Australia, I found time for a few quick drawings. These are my favorites & are of the inspiration right outside our window!
01.01.2022 Now THIS is seriously good yarn-bombing! Aren't they visually perfect in this setting, even if culturally a bit unexpected!
01.01.2022 Unfortunately (for me) my most recent work was not accepted for the Heysen Prize this year. After months of work on them it has been disappointing not to give them an airing out in public. I'm sure that there will be other opportunities to exhibit them, but for now, I'm making the most of social media to share them with you. 'Lamenting the Loss' & 'The Scripture Of Lost Trees' are about the increasing tendency local govts have developed of completely denuding suburban house blocks, to then cram mass housing onto those sites. It's one of those subjects I get a bit worked up about!!
