21.01.2022 My beautiful clients Rosie and Clover. They completed their 2nd Your Choice class today. Their amazing pet parents have come such a long way in just 7 days. It makes my heart sing thinking about the commitment and care this team has taken. One of the goals is loose lead walks. During the interim, to stop opportunities to pull, Rosie and Clovers parents are carrying them to and from the car, instead of letting them pull! Love it!

16.01.2022 Wisdom Wednesday All dogs are food-motivated! If they weren’t, they would die! If your dog isn’t responding to your treat during a training session, think about these: 1. You're using boring, tasteless food like kibble. A trainer I know calls it the 5c! If you up the ante on expectations, up the ante on your food! Pay with Lobster if the task is difficult for your dog.... 2. Your dog is too fearful/aroused/excited. If she has flipped into a reactive state, food will not register. Get her away from the thing she is distracted by, and try again. 3. You might be going too fast, or are in too distracting a location. Take a few steps back. Successive approximations work wonders! 4. He might not be hungry enough to care about the food. 08.01.2022 Not going to lie, I am biased, but damn it’s easy to train a Kelpie! This is hour one of crate training this morning. Rocket is given choice and an incentive payment to use his crate. If he gets it right, and goes in there himself he gets a bonus. I predict we can have the door closed by tomorrow, but he will let me know how good he feels about that by his body language. Side note: Master flash was choosing his crate to rest in by day 3 and the door could be closed without stress. Willow took 1/2 day - but she’s the best dog ever so it doesn’t surprise me

02.01.2022 Wisdom Wednesday Socialisation to vet handling and grooming shouldn’t just be pairing food with touch, or worse, allowing a puppy to lick/snuffle while tolerating the experience. Why? Because the dog hasn’t told us other than by body language, whether they are really ok with what’s going on. Often, true choice isn’t involved AND the behaviour needed hasn’t really been taught, practiced or proofed.... Most behaviour that is useful to pet parents, can be taught like a trick. A fun game where both teacher and learner enjoy the experience. My Polite Puppy class will teach you how to make a fun game, that creates life long behaviour you will find useful for vet visits, the groomer, or during your hyperactive 4 year old cousins visit!
