02.01.2022 Claves Wanting to introduce some musical play at home? Claves (or rhythm sticks) are a wonderful addition to the toy box. They help develop: Hand-eye coordination... Directionality (up, down) Language + listening skills Creative thinking Problem solving Rhythm, beat + tempo What type of claves are right for my child? For toddlers, we suggest using shorter, chunkier sticks that are easier for little hands to hold. 3.5yrs + are able to move to the traditional 10’’ or 12’’ claves. Activities at home: Drum rolls: Encourage your little one to drum roll on the floor (hard surfaces and drums work too). Experiment with tempo and volume. Fast, slow, quiet and loud! Play along to their favourite songs! Tunes that change tempos (have slow and fast sections) are particularly good for listening skills. Make some animals! Amelia is being a reindeer in this photo. We also like making unicorns and walruses in our classes! Adding directionality: How many different ways can you clap your claves? Up high above your head, down low on the floor. Explore different levels and directions. No claves are home? No problem! Perhaps you could use wooden spoons or chopsticks. #mumsinperth #toddleractivitiesathome #perthteachersnetwork #perthmumsnbubs #perthmumsgroup #musicforkids #perthmumsgroup #toddlersactivities #musicteacher
