24.01.2022 "Hypnosis affects your consciousness and brings you into a state wherein you focus only on the inside...Pop culture has us believe that hypnotherapy is all about dangling a pocket watch in front of someone’s face, and using it as a mind control mechanism. But, real-life hypnotherapy is so much more serious and life-altering. Not some mind control balderdash, but one that helps certainly and incredibly with mental and physical health." 10.01.2022 The 26 January in Australia marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British ships at Port Jackson, NSW. It marks the day of the foundation of Australia as a formal nation, but it also marks a day of mourning for the indigenous people of this country whose way of life was drastically changed from that day on. I don't have a firm view on whether or not the date of 'Australia Day' should be changed, but what I do know is that we are far away from being a ...country which truly integrates and celebrates indigenous culture as a way of life, compared to other countries around the world, in particular our neighbours in New Zealand. At JIIVA we believe that we should #embraceimperfection and #celebratetheunique. Australia's history is certainly one of imperfections and there is no denying that, but I look forward to having a day agreed by all Australians where we can concentrate on celebrating the truly unique aspects of our culture, our land, and our people, and grow our nation into the truly reconciled one that it should be #weareaustralian Photo credit: Millenius | Shutterstock
05.01.2022 "The yoga teacher who might be Chelsea's secret weapon" is an interesting read about a different kind of approach to 'yoga in sport'. "A typical session with Menon isn’t strictly yoga. A more accurate description, he said, would be something called Adhyatma Vidya, or the science of the self. It is the very last part of yoga, which at its most powerful can lead to a trancelike state." Credit: Tariq Panja, New York Times http://ow.ly/PJGF50xMcPP Credit: Andrew Testa
02.01.2022 "Wendy Suzuki, a neuroscientist at New York University, says that even mild to moderate exercise can reduce your risk of dementia by 30 percent." This article reviews 11 studies of yoga on brain function and memory loss where new evidence shows that "yoga may also have memory-saving effects on the brain......The researchers concluded that overall, yoga appeared to cause beneficial brain changes in the hippocampus, which is linked to memory, as well as the amygdala, which regulates emotions.....The practice of yoga helps improve emotional regulation to reduce stress, anxiety and depression...And that seems to improve brain functioning.
