21.01.2022 ACHY, TIRED FEET?? Christmas means so many things to different people but for a lot of us, it means more events/functions that involve standing around for hours on end. Or it means cooking/cleaning for extended periods or wandering around the shops searching for the perfect present! An Australian christmas gives the added bonus for having to do all of this in the heat which means we are often in shoes that offer little in support/cusioning. All of this adds up to having ach...y sore feet which does not help us to be festive and cheery! What Causes Achy Feet? Overuse of the intrinsic foot muscles which help to stabilise our joints. They get fatigued, tired and have microtears. What Can I Do To Help? * Roll your foot over a tennis ball (graduating to a golf ball) - this relaxes the muscles and helps get rid of trigger points * Pop them in an ice cold bath to reduce the swelling * When you do get a chance to rest, try to sit with your feet above the heart to help gravity to get rid of the build up of toxins * Try to wear shoes that have a bit of support and cushioning when you know you have to be on them for a long time. ARCHIES are a great option in the heat Wishing you a happy and painfree festive season

14.01.2022 Does your child suffer from: Sore, achy heel usually worse after sport? Are they between the ages 8-14?? They may be suffering from a condition called SEVERS which is an inflammatory growth plate disorder. IT IS EASILY TREATABLE!!... We need to reduce the pull of the muscles around the foot and improve the stability of the foot to become pain free ASAP.

12.01.2022 NEUROMA What is it? Often described as a bruised feeling at the forefoot or a stone in the shoe, a neuroma describes an inflammation or irritation of a nerve around the forefoot. Its often worse in tight shoes and the pain can radiate into the toes.... Why did I get it? An unstable foot means you get more friction or rubbing of the bones in the forefoot which squishes the nerves in between the bones. The body tries to protect the nerve by laying down scar tissue which becomes the neuroma. How do I fix it? Low level laser therapy along with work into the foot muscles to reduce the tightness in the area can help a lot in stopping pain. Orthotics can also stop it coming back.

07.01.2022 CALF STRETCHING Why? When the calf muscle is tight, it reduces ankle joint movement which makes the foot move more. This exacerbates overuse conditions like plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis and bursitis. When? There are many different studies into stretching showing a number of different results. To get the best results, you should stretch when the muscle is warm (ie after activity or in the shower). Generally we advise to hold the stretch for 10-15 seconds, 2-3 times ...per day. How? 1. Stand facing the wall, feet shoulder width apart and step one foot towards the wall 2. Twist back foot slightly so the toes are pointing towards the other foot 3. Keep your back heel on the ground, keep the back knee straight and bend the front leg towards the wall until you can feel a stretch on the back leg 4. Hold for 10-15 seconds Happy stretching!!

04.01.2022 ACHILLES TENDONITIS/SORE HEELS Its usually a case of "too much activity, too soon" which creates inflammation/swelling of the tendon at the back of the ankle. There is sometimes visible swelling/redness and people usually suffer from pain as they are walking/running/doing stairs. The aim of treatment is to reduce the pull on the Achilles tendon so massaging into the calves and stretching the calf muscles can work well. Using supportive footwear and orthotics helps to control the movement of the heel, stopping the extra force through the tendon. Heat (via a heat pack or deep heat/toger balm) into the calf muscle before activity and ice into the tendon after activity can help the manage pain. At the clinic, we also use Low Level Laser therapy to improve bloody flow to the tendon to speed up the healing process.
