23.01.2022 Cross posting with other groups. This is the second in my series on the history of media and especially the newspaper press in Northern NSW. At a time when covid-19 has cut the guts out of our regional media, it seems appropriate to remember why the press is important. https://www.armidaleexpress.com.au//early-paper-rush-hav/

22.01.2022 Multiple cross postings(!) to provide a report on the operations of the community Special Interest Group formed to consider the long term future of the UNE Heritage Centre and Regional Archives. We have been quite busy! Our first concern was to ensure that the Centre would stay open at a time when UNE is undergoing a restructure. We needed this to allow time for longer term planning. Dixson Librarian Blanca Pizzani advises us that the lease on the current premises has been e...xtended to March 2022 to allow time for planning. Our second concern was the creation of a path that would see the Centre's role as a critical resource for Northern NSW recognised and its governance and funding placed on a stable basis that involves the Northern NSW community and recognises its multiple roles. To this end, we have been gathering factual information about the Centre and documenting the role it has played regionally and nationally, including the collection of testimonials. We are also seeking support from stakeholders across the North and beyond. In this context, the New England Visions 2030 Institute has already prepared a consultation report on the role and future directions of the Centre. I will post a copy of this to the Armidale & District Historical Society FB Group so that people can access it. Led by Graham Wilson, the Special Interest Group has begun the process of contacting historical societies, family history groups and museums across the North seeking their involvement and support. Because we are coming up on Christmas, this process will take time. Meantime, I have begun a series in the Armidale Express on the Centre's remarkable story. Given paywalls and press disruptions I'm not sure how many this will reach, but the link to the first story is here -https://www.armidaleexpress.com.au//history-matters-the-/ We know that we have a long way to go, but we have begun. My thanks to all those involved. See more

16.01.2022 Cross posting. And so another project, my introductory course on the history of Australia's New England, comes to an end. This week will be the twentieth lecture, the tenth discussion group, since the project began. It's been a bigger ask than I had expected, partly because covid disrupted in the middle. This stalled us. When we resumed I had to deliver the lecture twice a week because of covid space limitations. It's been a rich learning experience in which my course partic...ipants have really pushed me. I owe them a lot. There is a deep interest in learning about the past. something that governments need to consider. Interestingly, the segments on Aboriginal New England up to 1788 and, to a lesser extent, the frontier wars attracted the most interest. People wanted to know. Their questions pushed me into new areas, new topics. At one point to illustrate kinship systems I broke the discussion group into segments and then used that to illustrate kin linkages, recognising that these varied. I am committed to running the course again next semester. Those on the wait list plus those who deferred mean that the course is almost fully booked. Still, the break gives me time to reflect and to work on my main book projects.

15.01.2022 With the agreement of the committee, we have begun the creation of an Armidale & District Historical Society Facebook Group as a way of keeping members and those interested in our history in touch during this shutdown You will find the group here - https://www.facebook.com/groups/331108067862859/
