24.01.2022 Shared from the Ex-Navy and Friends page. Today we stand to pause and pay tribute to those shipmates who completed their final watch some 35 years ago today. And those who continue to suffer as a result of being exposed in the course of their service to hydrogen sulphide gas (H2S), on-board HMAS Stalwart.... On 22 October 1985, while en-route from Darwin to Indonesia, 62 shipmates had to be evacuated to Darwin by helicopter after inhaling H2S, and three were to die MTP Brett Gilbert, MTP Michael Oliver, and Medic AB Ian McLachlan. Medic AB Ian McLachlan was posthumously awarded the Bravery Medal who had heroically gone to the assistance of the collapsed We stand together on this day in support of each other, as we did so many years ago in a time when sacrifice and duty to your messmates, flag, and country were all we knew! Some of us kept watch with you and others passed along George Street, and others on our way to lift our lid at the old man’s table. We were young men together of a time long gone by. It was a great voyage, and you served your watch. We are proud to have served with you as part of HMAS Stalwart’s ship's company. Boatswain...standby to pipe the side...so our Shipmate's can continue to rest in peace. Thank you for your service and sacrifice lads.

13.01.2022 25 year old Captain Walker witnessed the famous Christmas truce of 1914. In letters to his family he remarked "I suppose I have spent the most unique Christmas ...that I ever shall spend or want to spend. On marching up to relieve the Dublins on Christmas Eve, we noticed that there was little or no firing going on. When, we got there, they said the Germans wanted to have a local peace, being Christmas Eve. When we had taken over and got everything straight, we answered the enemy who were shouting at us from their trenches 8 yards away. They said they would not fire if we did not. We were a bit suspicious at first, but at last we agreed loud cheers from the Germans. To show they meant what they said, they put lights along the tops of their trenches so that we could see their movements." Captain Walker also detailed observations of German and British soldiers playing football with an old cap, as well as the singing of carols, and exchanges of chocolate and cigars. He was killed in action exactly 4 months later on April 25, 1915. He was one of the many thousands of World War One soldiers with no known grave, until his remains were discovered and miraculously identified in an archaeological dig in 2016. He was finally laid to rest in a reburial service in April 2018 that was attended by some of his descendants from New Zealand.

01.01.2022 #OTD Sergeant Mathew Locke, MG, SASR, KIA Today we pause to remember the life and service of Sergeant Matthew Locke, MG, SASR who was fatally wounded by small... arms fire whilst on patrol in Uruzghan Provice on the 25th of October 2007. Sergeant Matthew Locke enlisted into the Australian Regular Army on the 11 June, 1991. After he completed his Recruit Training at Kapooka, he was allocated to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps and commenced his Initial Employment Training at Singleton, New South Wales on the 10 September 1991. At the completion of his Initial Employment Training, Matthew was posted to the 5th/7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment. Matthew had a flair for Infantry training and whilst at the 5th/7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, he completed Driver Courses, Basic Mortar Course, promotion courses and became a Small Arms Coach. It was obvious that Matthew wanted to be challenged as a soldier so in November 1997, Matthew successfully completed the Special Air Service Selection Course. Over the next two years, Matthew completed another 15 specialist courses ranging from patrolling, demolitions, diving, parachuting, and medical. Matthew was posted to the 3rd Special Air Service Squadron. Sergeant Locke was awarded the Medal for Gallantry in December 2006 for gallantry in action in hazardous circumstances as the second-in-command of a Special Air Service Regiment patrol in the Special Forces Task Group whilst deployed on Operation Slipper, Afghanistan, in 2006. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Locke braved heavy enemy fire to neutralise the Taliban advancing on the Australian position and in doing so saved the lives of his mates. Matthew was killed in action on the 25th of October 2007 during an engagement with Taliban extremists during Operation Spin Ghar. Lest we forget. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message.
